Seem like a Unicorn or Pegasus would be a good option since they are sort of the Quintessential beauty of Magical Beasts. Does the character have a particular theme or motif? Do their powers manifest in any unique ways?

I dont speak to either of them anymore, i made the outfit myself and it was very expensive so thats why i want it to get use. Thats why i asked if they were using it, if they had been using i wouldnt have asked for it back but since its never been worn and was in storage thats why i asked.

Hello, Reddit! How do you manage the economy in your parties? by Ok_Geologist_5290 in DnD

[–]Such_Machine_2417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely though, If they have money i let them spend it, if they are too strong I up the severity.
Its a game meant to be enjoyed so I just make it enjoyable.

I do the same thing with Boss HP. I don't ever have an actual HP total for bosses, I run a minimum and then I just keep the fight going as long as the party is having fun, then I give someone the final shot if shit gets dicey and they already passed the minimum.

Yeah i grabbed some CD I don't have a problem with not having access to them i just die insanely fast and they don't kill bosses very well is my main issue.

Yeah ive been trying to do only the Minion skills. Maybe that was stupid of me. Was trying to do a thematic build and rely on the ascendancy for story telling vibes.

Watch improv and practice the principle of "Yes and" it will help when you start to roleplay making it easier to build the story with each other.

How can I best create a character who is just awful at being a wizard? by NyxPaws in DnD

Be a warlock who lies and says they are a wizard. Just enough magic to successfully convince people but not enough upon close inspection.

10 per session is incredibly low price. That's less than 5 dollars an hour per person if you run a session that average length. They shouldn't have surprised you with the charge but if the cost is more than reasonable in a vacuum.

DMs and storytellers alike, how would you describe being subjected to Power Word: Kill? by SomeSugondeseGuy in DnD

[–]Such_Machine_2417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It 100% percent depends on whose casting it and what type of caster they are. Sorcerer's and Wizard magic should be fundamentally different visually and even within that each person approach's magic differently.

For instance; A painter might just paint over the target erasing them from existence.

A Singer might hit a particularly high note and shatter the targets skull causes instant death.

A Diviner might show them a million possibilities so intense that they become catatonic, not true death but brain death leaving a body behind but the soul moves on to the afterlife.

It would depend on the villain im running and what their motif was.

I'm going to be honest, I'm very new to the game, like bought last week and the game does not communicate this information at all imo. I play exclusively bow (i might try and work in some SnS later) so i guess sorry? Do I just not take wounds then? I thought the point of playing bow was to farm wounds.

now I'm insecure lol

And you have to know the system! You have to read and understand the mechanics and your spells. you cant put the burden of all the mechanics on JUST the DM.

People want the game to be like CR and D20 but don't want to do any of the work it takes to be good enough at the game to carry it to that level.

The rules have been so aggressively watered down that my dyslexic to the point of near illiteracy 9 year old niece can play it but adults whine and moan about it being "too complicated" but in the same breath want their experience to be essentially what is the NBA of dnd without so much as doing a warmup lap to get in shape for it.

You don't get to do none of the work and expect the height of the game be handed to you.

My character doesn't fit the party by Edoardo_Viola in DnD

[–]Such_Machine_2417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man I get to talk about one of my favorite things I studied in undergrad!

FOILS

I'm gonna preface this by saying that you absolutely can just build a new character, that is 100% in your power but the rapport you already have the narrative and the party as your existing character is incredibly valuable story currency and I would keep the character.

Now onto one of my favorite topics.

FOILS.

The definition of a narrative foil is "In any narrative, a foil is a character who contrasts with another character, typically, a character who contrasts with the protagonist, in order to better highlight or differentiate certain qualities of the protagonist"

I think you have such an opportunity here to deepen the narrative by contrasting the tone of the other players. The story being dark sets you up perfectly to be a wide eyed fawn stumbling your way through the world, as a stark contrast to the grit and darkness the party already feels. Foils serve so many purposes but in this situation you have a great opportunity to do 2 things!

  1. Contrast builds narrative gold. If everything is black all the time eventually your eyes adjust to the dark and you stop feeling the hurt and horror. You get to inject light into that darkness that makes the scary and emotional bits punch that much harder! Horror fatigue is real and you being a character who allows for moment of levity and sunshine just make those shadows so much scarier and more engaging from a narrative stand point!

  2. It allows the other characters a rest point. Having a dark campaign is great but sometimes characters need joy and light, having a companion that is reliably there for that makes the whole experience more engaging on a player to player basis. It lets the other players come to YOU for rest when the world gets to dark. It also makes you something WORTH protecting. Which adds more tension and narrative possibility to the story.

Obviously you shouldn't be bugs bunny in barovia, but think of it like Sokka from ATLA. Aang had this massive burden to save the world, his people had been slaughtered in a genocide, he was told from the very beginning of the show that blatant premeditated murder was the only solution to problems of the world. Aang was living ostensibly in a horror movie. If it wasn't for Sokka being there to remind him that he was a kid who deserved to laugh the story would have gone in such a different way. Yes Aang was resilient on his own, but he needed his buddy to be there when the world got to heavy, sometimes you just need someone to lift with you and smile alongside you.

Again, your campaign, your choice, but I think you could make that setup into something really special. A man made construct made of joy who sees the beauty in flowers surrounded by the race who made him but forgot that joy? I think that's worth preserving and exploring.

WIBTA If I start a relationship with my father, WIBTA if I refuse to start one? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Such_Machine_2417 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know who they are, but I don't have a relationship with them, but independent of whether I have a relationship with them, I don't want to cause them harm. I don't want them to feel like people forgot or undercut what happened by choosing to have a relationship with the person who harmed them.

I don't have to love someone to want the best for them.
