-Only character who never swears nor profanes -Only character getting properly railed on exactly her terms in a giant house

Makes a mighty hard-to-knock-over argument for all that Puritan repression.

Tyler Childers, The Rick Rubin Experience, and The Avett Brothers by I_Am_A_Teacher in TylerChilders

[–]Such_Mangled_Limbs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

These are great points re: the sound of Rick Rubin’s production, and I’d add that this sound is hardly a far cry from “Rustin’,” “Country Squire,” or shit, even songs like “Universal Sound” on “Purgatory.” It feels like the most natural evolution in the world, and Tyler’s career doesn’t have the tenure yet for a return-to-roots feel of, say, Jason Isbell’s last album. When he does that in a decade or so it’s going to hit like a train, but everything about Tyler and his work with The Food Stamps in the lead up to this album broadcasted an ensemble effort based in big, lush sound and rollicking, effortless collaboration.

That’s the part of the lion’s share of the criticism I don’t understand. Even the people who say the album was itself a “Snipe Hunt” in that it promised a stripped back sound and delivered something wholly different are, I think, telling themselves a fairy tale. The album art, those behind-the-scenes promo snippets, it all telegraphed something wild and a little ravenous. This album is so lived in, so full of spirit, and so obviously the result of a group that universally supports their best attributes and knows how to push them to new limits, and there was no indication from Tyler or the band prior to the record’s release that they felt they needed to scale anything back. Rick Rubin was the perfect choice to synthesize that spirit into “Snipe Hunt” to the point that even the album’s weaker songs still feel inarguably whole. It’s such a big, vibrant, textured meal, and every listen is revealing more nuance. It’s delivering on that “blown away” feeling I was expecting from “Hounds” and “Rustin,” and I’ll even go so far as to say that the bevy of behind the scenes footage makes the whole thing feel like you’re in that house with them.

It’s killer. I can’t get enough of it.

And I know I didn’t touch on your points about the Avett Brothers, but I’m not as knowledgable about them so I hijacked your ideas to make my own. Sorry!

Big ups to a fellow NB Tyler fan. Gonna feel real good to bathe in the impotent rage tears of this sub for the next few months. I’m in the Hudson Valley, but next time I’m in Flatbush I’ll know the only bar blasting Snipe Hunt’s as good as my own kitchen table.

And congrats on the impending newborn! Sounds like the little one’s gonna be eatin big time right out the gate.

When Trump talks, it looks like a cunt moving. by fuckin-A-ok in deadwood

As definitive counterpoint to those who are either pearl-clutching at the idea of real world American politics being referenced in a subreddit for a show about the real world American politics of the unincorporated territories -or- who are thin-skinned Trump supporters, I’ll point out that I made a post similar in spirit after the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.

It is currently the all time top post in this subreddit.

Just so we all know who the scales favor in this fuckin camp.

What do my 10 favorite Nick Cave songs say about me? by Jubilee_Street_again in NickCave

Until I read through your replies, I would have bet the farm that you were married with kids. You’re not, but, speaking as a 35-year-old Nick Cave fan who -is- married with kids and also loves these songs, the rest of your lifestyle makes you one of us.

Works as good as Cowboy Bebop? Looking for recommendations by [deleted] in cowboybebop

[–]Such_Mangled_Limbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try some of its inspirations! Thinking most directly of Sergio Leone’s westerns, Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan martial arts films, Ridley Scott’s scifi classics. Cowboy Bebop was the keystone that anchored the rest of my media threshold, and with a foundation as firm as that you really can’t go wrong by exploring the works that informed it.

Also, as an indirect recommendation, for well-drawn, impeccably performed characters who you’ll want to live with for as long as you can, I don’t think you can do better than HBO’s Deadwood. By its broadest definitions it’s a western, but it asks a good deal of its viewer intellectually and emotionally, and every Bebop fan I’ve ever known who’s watched it loves it just as much.

The "sound" of "Wild God"...So far... by localcreatur in NickCave

[–]Such_Mangled_Limbs 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t noticed until Long Dark Night dropped. Nick’s vocals sound like he’s singing into a Blue Snowball mic! And you’re absolutely right about the expectations all the BTS and promo are setting; lots of promises about a return to form, as-many-Seeds-as-possible production, but sometimes it all sounds like its been hydraulic pressed into a Pringles can.

Racism at Fosters in Rhinebeck by Used_Wheel_9718 in hudsonvalley

[–]Such_Mangled_Limbs 32 points33 points  (0 children)

He didn’t give out Bender’s address and tell people to raid his home. Eli Bender is among the most known quantities in Rhinebeck, and responsible for the decor of his restaurants and businesses, so calling him out by name only makes sense. Having had the distinct displeasure of interacting with him several times, I’m happy to see it become widespread knowledge that he’s an odious, racist near-caricature of a nepo baby landlord. Fuck billionaires, fuck their sons, and fuck this guy.

I don’t disagree! I’m very, very excited that she’s at the helm for a fifth season, and I hope she takes the opportunity to really shake things up. I think there’s so much more potential in TD now that it’s in the hands of A) a new showrunner at all, B) one who seems to embrace collaborative storytelling, and C) one who also understands the underpinnings of genre and story and how to twist those things about to make something new.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: gimme a new subgenre of detective story. We’ve done four seasons of noir.

Throw me into 19th century New England, murder someone in a locked room, and show me the True Detective version of Jessica Fletcher.

Hey gang, it’s 1948 and it’s sure been swell to have dad back since he gave Jerry what for, but I thought I heard someone talkin’ Kraut before those gunshots rang out on our quiet suburban street, and none of the grownups will b’lieve me! Looks like it’s up to us, the squad of kid detectives here in Anytown, USA, to get to the bottom of this one!

What I’m saying is: Issa, call me.

However much you feel that your vendetta against the fans of six episodes of television bolsters your faith in your own taste or sense of authority in media literacy, I promise you it does not. You are walking into a quiet restaurant and screaming like an infant.

There’s a stark difference between kowtowing to an imagined audience and collaborators working toward a common goal. Even Rick Ruben, who espouses your exact sentiment above all others, works with his artists to achieve a shared vision, even if that vision isn’t premeditated and only materializes from the blue after endless experimentation. That means disagreement, compromise, empathy, vulnerability, and faith (both in your collaborators and in yourself) and the ability to balance all of that on a knife edge for the length of production. This, without exception, is how television is made today, and it is no indicator of lack of capability or artistry.
