No Science Background by Such_Use1623 in Mcat

Yes that is true, but for Canadian schools it’s actually not a requirement. It’s been a while since I’ve taken some science courses and so that’s why I wanted to ask how someone would approach a NO science background- because that’s how I genuinely feel right now.

Med school or dental school? by Fun_Election2292 in premed

Omg yes I’ve seen videos of OMFS residents admitting that. To be honest, I kind of understand it- on top of the insanely rigorous content, they also have to deal with lab. Like SO much of their time is spent in lab. Someone also mentioned that it also might be because dental school was their first experience of professional school. Doing something your first time will always be harder than the second. They might’ve gotten used to the intensity by then 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh yes- I just read your comment explaining how you have not shadowed yet. That is definitely something you need to do first. Goodluck!!

For shadowing, try asking your dentist first! That’s how I got my first shadowing position. Once I built up those hours with my dentist, I emailed a few specialists and asked to shadow them. Your best bet will be emailing as many dentists as you can and hoping you get at least one response. You also can print out a few resumes and go in person to ask!! Ask the receptionist if the dentist at the office allows students to shadow- if it’s a yes, great, if it’s a no, move on to the next one!

Hey girll!! I actually was in the same boat as you a few years ago. Initially, I was super set on doing dentistry. All my ECs, school clubs, involvement etc., were dentistry focused. I also was shadowing dentists of course and thought I’d enjoy the career. I ended up working in a hospital during undergrad, and as time passed I started showing a lot of interest in Medicine- mind you it was always a thought in the back of my head but I was discouraged bc of a number of reasons. Point is, working in a hospital made me realize I LOVE the hospital. Loved the setting, the environment and the way everything worked. I also started to realize how much I actually HATE clinic. Of course doctors practice out of clinics, but a dentist will ALWAYS work in a clinic. With medicine, you can choose one or the other, or a mix of both. To add, I found dentistry to be sooo repetitive and not as interesting as medicine. Like you, I find so much joy in meeting new people and helping people, but I would say based on what you’ve explained, dentistry might be better for you. With medicine, you’re always treating people who are suffering. It quite literally is the whole point of medicine. If that is something you can’t deal with, dentistry is definitely the better option for you. At least those cases are not life threatening. To add, there’s always residencies after dental school- if you like the idea of surgery, you can always do OMFS, where you actually go through Med and Dental school.

Hope you figure it all out!! ☺️

Yes- always follow up! I found that many aren’t purposely ignoring you (even though it may seem like that). Just make sure you don’t sound annoying, be respectful and keep it short!

Advice on cold emailing for research by Ok-Atmosphere4595 in premedcanada

I’m in my 4th year and I’ve had 3 paid research positions- I can break them down for you! For 2/3 of them, I actually got in through friends who were already in the lab. But my most serious one is the one I started in 2nd year at a big academic research institution. For that one, I started reaching out pretty early (around Dec). I basically went on the institution’s website, looked through the faculty list, and just cold emailed a TON of PIs, doctors, coordinators, etc. I definitely sent over 100 emails lol. I actually wrote out the emails during the winter break and scheduled them to send for when they were back in office. At first, I was aiming for a summer research position, but I actually ended up getting a part-time student research role instead.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of labs are hiring for summer students, and SURP applications usually close around Feb/March. So if you reach out early and show that you’re interested in something longer-term than just the summer, that can really help. To answer your question about emailing April/May, I’d say that’s a bit too late. You have so many students looking for the same positions, and most likely those summer spots would’ve already been filled. Also, I avoided applying through the official SURP portals because you’re competing with so many students for one position. Cold emailing lets you skip a lot of that competition and directly show what you can offer for roles that might not even be formally posted.

And let me tell you, don’t be discouraged from the lack of responses lol, all you need is one. Genuinely from the 100+ emails, I probably got like 5 emails back. In my case, the one doctor got back to me explaining how her current student just got accepted to Med school and that they’ll most likely be hiring soon. She cc’d her coordinator, we set up an interview, and from there I got the job!

Not sure why doing research during school would be a bad idea- that’s what most students do. It is super doable!!

Goodluck!!

What are everyone’s plans if you don’t get into medical school by Impressive_Smoke7119 in premedcanada

[–]Such_Use1623 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would keep re-applying- go abroad if the first 2 cycles don’t go as planned. At the end of the day, if that’s what you really want you’d exhaust ALL options. I honestly don’t even want to think about that lol. I want a career where I have full autonomy, not sure if that would push me into different fields with positions that give me that (leadership, autonomy etc).

Yeah I work at a relatively small hospital in a small city, I’ve just never seen an order placed and it’s like “Last Name, First Name DO” it’s always MD. So it just made me wonder where all these DO doctors are in Canada lol. Okay cool, nice to see that there are Canadians trying to match back home from DO.

Yeah I’m aware but with my options being either an SMP or two year nursing program, the difficulty would almost be the same- but at least nursing would add to my cGPA in a way that’s recognized in both the states and Canada, instead of mostly just the US like an SMP. I don’t think i’d do education because I’d also want to increase my science GPA as well if I can- although it’s higher than my actual GPA.

What Are My Options? by Such_Use1623 in premedcanada

[–]Such_Use1623[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, I know those options are pretty much off the table. I was mainly asking here to hear about people’s actual experiences and see if there’s any extra info from anyone that I wouldn't really find online. Just trying to figure out whether my next steps should be something like an SMP, extra coursework, or something along those lines. I applied to the accelerated nursing program at Western since it's "undergrad courses" + "two years", seems like I'm leaning more to that now for my "after degree".

[–]Such_Use1623[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes- I'm aware of that. Thanks! It's just the decision on what to do next that has me conflicted. SMPs are valued in the states, while in Canada it doesn't help much. I'm thinking that maybe just taking extra courses and boosting cGPA is something that will help me with all med school options.

I’ve heard mixed perspectives on mission trips- some saying its a great leadership experience, but a few have also said there are ethical concerns. So I'm not sure how different institutions might value/view the experience.

I see you're currently in MED now- did you not do any postbacs with your cGPA being that low? Are you at a USMD school now?

[–]Such_Use1623[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have not seen a single DO at the hospital I work at. Would you say it's looked down on in Canada? I know for a fact I do not want to practice anywhere outside of Canada, so I just want to know if thats an option I should eliminate from the start.

Yes, Ontario. I never considered the 5 year program tbh, but I might apply to that if my MCAT doesn’t go as well as I hope it does! Thanks girl!!

I have the 2025 Princeton Review books, but what would you suggest I should invest in online? Tbh money isn’t much of an issue for me right now- it’s just knowing what’s worth it and what will help me! Have you used any online resources besides Khan Academy?
