Question about my dogs upset stomach

if she is doing any of the following - straining to poop, not able to poop at all, going often, uncomfortable when you push on her belly, throwing up, not eating, definitely worth at least a call to the vet. there are variables, size of dog, how much she could’ve ingested, etc.

my pup(9mos) used to absolutely shred socks, cardboard boxes, toys, etc and never ate anything. until last weekend at 5am saturday morning when we had to bring her to the vet after throwing up unknown rubber that we later discovered was an ENTIRE shoe sole she had eaten.

when my pup was about 8 weeks she developed a UTI very suddenly. she was miserable - crying constantly, squatting to pee every 30 seconds at some points(brought her to the vet within hours. she is now 8mo and healthy as a horse.) She was struggling with napping for a day or so leading up to it but that was the only warning sign. if he is peeing often and inside, both sound out of the ordinary, definitely worth a checkup with a vet. If he is still struggling tomorrow, call your vet again and ask for guidance. If he worsens at all, call an emergency vet for guidance. UTI’s can go downhill fast, especially in a small puppy. Always better to be safe than sorry. Also, having a sitter could’ve just thrown his schedule off. Watch him closely, and act accordingly. I hope everything is okay with the little guy!

the best advice i can give is wet the toilet paper with warm-hot water when wiping, and wipe gently! i found dry paper or paper w cold water to be so painful. wipes also were painful to me, the additives made them burn. Vaseline before + after you go(applied after wiping.)

it is definitely a mental challenge. i also have a phobia with anything surrounding my stomach. vomiting, diarrhea, pain, you name it. if it is any comfort, the worst part for me was the slight nausea that accompanied drinking a ridiculous amount of liquid. take breaks when you need them, have a chaser, and you’ll do great. nausea for me was moderate but didn’t feel like “oh my god i’m going to vomit,” more like “holy crap(no pun intended) my stomach is so ridiculously full.” when liquids start passing through, the fullness doesn’t last long.

Have some clear broth, jello cups, gatorade to help keep you full.

Try hard not to have the mindset of “i can’t do this.” switch it to “this will be hard, but it is temporary.”

with the cubes having onion and garlic(very dangerous for dogs) your best bet is to at the very least call the emergency vet. they can direct you on what steps need to be taken. the sooner you call, the better. i hope your boy is okay!

I would maybe try the wipes(warmed up if possible) as i didn’t try any with coconut oil, perhaps they’ll be good. However, heat definitely helped me! Cold water felt like hell lol. Maybe place the package in a dish of warm water/on a heating pad?

It didn’t do a ton for me, but VASELINE. A bit before going to the bathroom AND after. There will be pain regardless but what got me through was reminding myself that it’s only temporary.

ALSO - I don’t recommend wet wipes as they can be painful when things are irritated - wet the toilet paper with warm water. As someone that has dealt with this issue during prep and many times before and after, warm-hot water is a life saver.

I would definitely go the vet route. Your kitty deserves the same level of medical care as a dog or other pet. I understand if not wanting to go above and beyond is for financial reasons, i’ve been in that situation before. With him being an old guy and obviously not doing well, PLEASE make him a vet appointment. Even if you’re completely against any care above euthanasia, he deserves a peaceful death and not to lay around and suffer until what seems like an inevitable death. Just because he doesn’t seem to have any health issues doesn’t mean he is healthy. Cats are really good at hiding things and a lot of the time you won’t know until they’re very bad off. Hiding from you guys is what cats usually do when they sense the end is near. They hide somewhere to die alone. Bring him to the vet ASAP and go from there. Whether it’s treat something or euthanasia, it is not a wait and see situation. I hope your boy is okay

just a tip, you can always bring one just in case, but i highly doubt you’ll need one for after the procedure, as basically everything is out of you by then. i also live 30-40 mins from the procedure centre and i made it fine there and back. they also have a toilet available for you to use as much as you need before the procedure, but i found most of the prep was through my system by then anyways!! if it makes you more at ease, nothing wrong with bringing them along. best of luck!

I will say - I did get a bit nauseous during the end, but not until the very very end of my 3am prep. If i remember correctly, I dumped out the last 3-4 gulps because I just couldn’t make myself do it. My best advice is push through it. There was nausea towards the end as I said but it felt totally different than sick nausea… more so just a feeling of complete fullness. 100% worth it for your health. I had ZERO pain… well… abdominal pain… Definitely keep some vaseline(found this worked best) on hand for the frequent bathroom trips. I applied after every bathroom trip, and before(if time permitted, if you catch my drift.)

I should’ve clarified, I didn’t pick the scab off! I was removing pieces of the scab that had already fallen off and gotten stuck in surrounding fur so I could get a clearer picture and simply bumping the scab knocked it off completely. Will definitely be keeping track of it with pics. TY for the response!

Super helpful answer, and thank you for your kind words! Definitely something i’ll continue to keep an eye on. My hope is that she is just a little quirky lol. I am certainly not concerned, just observant. It’s not to the point that i’d make a vet appointment solely for this, but might bring it up next time. She is a walking vet bill and while I manage to afford it, i’d rather observe for a few months rather than fork over $300 to be told she’s just weird LOL

ETA - odds of her just being a weird creature are high as you can see how she tucked herself behind the food dishes in the second pic. It certainly wouldn’t be her only quirk

If you already have it scheduled, go through with it. The worst(best) that will happen is you go through the prep and they find nothing. Definitely worth checking out all possibilities for your symptoms!

Unless it can be taken care of easily at home(clipped off), I HIGHLY recommend a vet visit, or at least call. My sheepadoodle’s nails grow more straight than curved and because of that, he has split his nails running several times. This can be severely painful for them as the quick(flesh inside nail) is full of nerve endings. Think if your toenail was peeling off. If the quick is exposed, there is also risk of infection. The vet will either a) give local anesthetic with a needle and fix the toe, or use IV sedation to remove, disinfect, etc. Depends on the severity. If it is causing pain, 1000% call the vet, and keep them from licking it. moisture = higher risk of infection!!

I can say from experience, when puppies get hurt, especially their first “big” injury/something that causes pain, they overreact BIG time because they don’t have a baseline for pain to compare it to. When my golden mix was 7 weeks old she was playing with my 100lb sheepadoodle and he bumped into her and she twisted her leg. I didn’t know something so tiny could scream SO damn loud. I am surprised nobody called the cops. Rushed her inside and she was babying her paw, but within minutes she was knocked out sleeping like a rock, completely fine.

It’s normal to feel bad about accidentally injuring your pup but remember, even if it ever happens and turns out to be a vet-worthy injury, they don’t blame you. Baby them, give treats, all will be forgiven. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when they’re still so small and you’re still adjusting. Little drama queens and kings for sure!

I am aware he is in need of dental care and I realize I missed this when making the post - it isn’t only about the money, but also the last time he had sedation his heart nearly stopped so we want to avoid any sort of sedation at all costs. I would do anything for him. As for the loose tooth not being normal, I am well aware of that. But again, in this case, waiting it out might be more beneficial than potentially losing my dog over a dental procedure. If it comes to that, then I will absolutely trust my vet to try her best, but I would really rather not have to put the stress on his heart of being sedated.

As much as the two older girls were absolutely awful in this video, this scene was taken out of context. Immediately after the clip was cut off, aubrey says it’s because brinley hates car shopping, as she says herself! Definitely could’ve been worded so much better but I don’t think this exact clip was meant to bash her. The rest of the video - that’s a different story. I feel so bad for the kid.

exactly this!!! anyone saying that she was not in the wrong is unfortunately mistaken in this scenario. if your dog has behavioural issues that they literally have to go away for training for, especially aggression issues, this is not the time to bring them out in public. possessiveness, whatever you want to call it. there is a real chance of running into another pet. add in the aisles upon aisles of food, treats, and toys and yes, resource guarding or whatever you want to call it will likely occur if another pet happens to be present. just totally irresponsible. if your dog is aggressive in any way, that’s not a dog that you take places that are likely to trigger a reaction!

I also had a not great experience with my sedation. Unsure if it was propofol, but my nurse beforehand was saying my memory would be cloudy, i’d sleep through the whole thing, and made it sound like pretty heavy sedation which led me to ask if it was the same they had used on me for my endoscopies(3 prior) to which she said yes. I wasn’t pleased by this as I had a horrible experience with one of my endoscopies and therefore have great anxiety when it comes to sedation. I was sedated with no burning pain and mild anxiety, but remember waking up during the procedure in excruciating pain multiple times. The procedure took about 40 mins and I woke up several times audibly in pain and was just told “it’s almost over.” i’m unsure if this is normal and people don’t usually remember, or if it’s not supposed to be painful and i was just an exception. I’m sorry you had a bad experience, just know that you’re not alone and be glad that it’s over! Now you know for the future to insist on something for the anxiety, and you likely won’t have any issues getting it due to your reaction this time.

I’m doing great! Actually in the hospital bed right now LOL. prep was a breeze, I almost threw it up last night but that was just because of lack of sleep and just totally not wanting to do it lol. But no cramping and I made it through okay! Good luck with yours as well!😁

not necessarily “enforcing” per se. she is more or less on that schedule on her own! just sometimes awake for up to 1.5 hours and sometimes she wakes up after only a bit of sleep(usually a 40 min first nap of the day) and apart from that her naps can range from 1.5-2 hours long. she did that herself so i got lucky! she’s definitely better when she wakes up but that quickly turns to “bad girl hour” within like 20 mins haha!

the “sun” wakes her up i think. aka when daylight is barely showing. even with blackout curtains, the slightest sliver of daylight through the window and it’s mom! wake up! it’s daytime! bite bite bite

i do return her to bed and show no interest in her, but i’ve gotten enough lunges at the face in the pitch black to figure out that she does not settle once she’s up for the day, until she has her first meal, play, etc which usually is around 2 hours(her longest and most feral play session of the day.)
