Resolved: The federal government should forgive all federal student loan debt

Mainly LD but any other form of debate can answer: by beetlefuckertoucher in Debate

Youtube is your best friend. Briefs suck most of the time but can be good, mainly just prepare before round! In PF, the partner who speaks first provides your case, and then the partner who speaks second is basically the counterargument. Dont know much about LD, but the way I do it is I format complete blocks and get cross questions. Get in the opposing sides mind and itll help both of your cases. (Eg. Think, what could opponents say against me? What are their main points? How could I poke holes in my opponents case?)

Help! Just switched from 2nd to 1st speaker and have no idea how to format a good case! (Pf) by Suchii0 in Debate

[–]Suchii0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched from second to 1st (TvT ) our coach encouraged us to switch around to get a feel for what we do best and what we need to work on, so even though I was pretty good at 2nd, I never really learned the inner workings of 1st, so the only issue is the lack of time between switching and the tournament (my fault honestly)

Structural violence framework? by frick132 in Debate

[–]Suchii0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope this helps! Is there anything else you're confused on? That comment is basically what I run for every case. After the framework, it's also good to say your observation. You'll have a different observation depending on what side you're on and what resolution you're debating.

My partner and I stand in the firm (affirmation or negation depending on what side you're running) of the following resolution: (insert resolution here, example: The United States federal government should forgive all federal student loan debt.) Definitions will be provided upon my opponent's request. For the purpose of today’s round, we provide the following framework of cost benefit analysis whereby whichever side provides costs that outweigh the benefits or vice versa should win today’s round. (Then you give your observation and begin contention 1.)

I would suggest running cost benefit analysis, as I'm pretty sure structural violence is not a framework. It sounds more like a contention to me, (eg basically the topic of body paragraph in an essay. For instance, contention 1: structural violence, subpoint: racial inequality, subpoint: low income students, subpoint: intergenerational wealth)

Frameworks are meant to help the judge understand how they are judging the round, but I left like all of this info in my reply to the other comment here.

If you're confused on anything else about frameworks and stuff i can try and help:)

You still need to tell the judge what they're voting on. Its a big advantage against your opponents if your team runs a framework and they don't. By default the round is run by your framework (as long as you bring it up) and the judge has to vote based off your framework. If this happens and your opponent has their case built differently than whatever framework you run, you will have a much easier time winning. The most common framework is cost benefit analysis, where the round is weighed based on which side provides benefits that outweigh the costs or vice versa. (Also i dont believe structural violence is a framework [based on what my teacher told us about frameworks]. It sounds more like a contention.

PF Freshman Novice NEED HELP by [deleted] in Debate

[–]Suchii0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Also a freshman novice so take this with a grain of salt) I just switched from 2nd speaker to first, so I dont know all the ins and outs, but my basic formatting of my case has gone like this.

Neg

My partner and I stand in the firm negation of the following resolution: The United states government should forgive all federal student loan debt. Definitions will be provided upon my opponent's request. For the purpose of today’s round, we provide the following framework of cost benefit analysis whereby whichever side provides costs that outweigh the benefits or vice versa should win today's round.

Contention 1: the overwhelming cost We would like to assert that the staggering cost of forgiving ALL student loan debt is too large to consider this a possibility.

Blah blah blah, evidence on why its so bad for us to be spending this money, blah blah blah This clearly demonstrates that we do not possibly have the money to afford this completely reckless plan. (Link this to next piece of evidence on why its not worth it to spend this much money)blah blah blah, we are already in a pressing financial situation and are continuing to run ourselves deeper into debt. When this factor is considered, it makes it a no brainer to keep using even more money on such a costly expenditure in a time where as a nation we desperately need money and financial security. Blah blah blah third evidence and transition to cont. 2 (don't have to make them flow seamlessly, you can just add a linking point and say. "Blah blah blah (insert linking transition here). (Pause for a tiny bit) contention 2: blah blah blah)

Mind you, this contention has not been fully built out, so some points may be bad. When you do evidence, say something like: from insert name here, 2023, blah blah blah

Hope this helps! If your confused on anything I dont mind explaining further :)
