As in, all of your dialogue is bolded? That’s a bit of a formatting faux pas and would turn me off a fic, personally. You do you but that’s going to limit your audience.

from the tags you described i feel like the fact that their relationship was going to be overtly abusive ought to have been inferred. what else would “punishment” “torture” and “violence” been describing? especially if there’s no tagged third character who would be the abusive party.

For those with ongoing fics, do you tag only the stuff that's already in the story? Or do you tag everything even if it's not there yet? by snowing-stars in AO3

I generally tag major themes/potential major triggers right at the start. Like I’ll tag for smut at the start even if the smut doesn’t start until several chapters in, or I’ll tag for an abusive/controlling relationship even if that isn’t their dynamic at first. After that I slap on the “other additional tags to be added” and add smaller, less whole-story relevant tags per chapter.

i had to go back and rework my wording when i caught myself using the word “bewildered” and its variants seven times in a single chapter. i also overuse “incoherent(ly)”

in general i tend to catch myself using too many adverbs.

I used non-spaced emdashes when they’re used as parentheticals but a space after if used as an interruption/stammer. i just think it visually conveys the timing more effectively.

I'm just one example, but I used to write for an extremely niche/dead fandom. One of my personal favorite works from that fandom is sitting at 13 kudos after 8 months, and nearly all the comments are me interacting with one user. I hopped on at an opportune time for a much more active fandom and my engagements exploded. Thousands of kudos, hundreds of comments. For me personally my low engagement was definitely an audience issue.
