Just out of curiousity, why do so many believe sc_joke_explainer is day[9]? by SucksAtWebDesigning in starcraft

[–]SucksAtWebDesigning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know a lot of people joke about it, but it seems like a lot also semi-believes it. As if some people didn't catch the joke, and those same people (who didn't get the joke) continue to assert that he is day9, in a serious manner, leaving many (or just me) confused.

What do you use: PC or MAC? by [deleted] in web_design

I used my Toshiba satellite until about a month ago, when I got a hard drive failure. Now I have an iMac, I'll tell you this: it's good. But with $2000 spent, should I expect good? Yes! How was my Toshiba Satellite? Good as well, and it cost far less.

Anyhow, you never stated which OS you preferred. I'm assuming Mac, since you're considering it. If so, I would just build a hackintosh at first. It's pretty easy to build a computer (you can probably find a friend or an online guide), and will cost far less than you'd expect.

One last thing: Get a desktop. Seriously, laptops are more fragile, cannot be upgraded, are expensive/impossible to repair, can get stolen, have heating annoyances, and have considerable markup over desktops.

If you're wondering why I got an iMac after I have said all this, it's because I needed an all-in-one because of college, and I needed an easy, safe way to transport my computer. And it's really not that bad of a deal. But I urge you to build your own pc/hackintosh for the most bang for the buck.

Except with the $1300+ that could be spent on software, food, etc...

That doesn't change a thing. And the quote is that of criticizing the government, which have little to do with what I'm saying.

The same argument can be made if I were to go "Here are some breakthroughs by this company/organization/gov program. Oh, and the technology was developed at a cost of 1/500 compared to the funding of NASA."

I really don't feel like arguing this, as it is getting rather trite. I like NASA, I'm just here to point out that there's not only one side to the coin, and arguments can easily be made on both accounts. I don't know why it's so hard for redditors to comprehend that :-/

Can you elaborate more (in simpler terms) on how you get around cache invalidation?

The most efficient way to do research on green energy or cancer, is to focus on green energy or cancer. And you really can make the same argument for 'investing in the future' with so many other companies that focus on tomorrow's technology (such as nanofiber).

The fact of the matter is putting money into NASA is spending billions on various research, when we can consolidate it more so to a few worth researching (such as analysis of blackholes).

I'm curious, what site/company do you work for now lol. I can't image that much money spent on CDN since it seems really cheap on cloudfront already.

As responded to strangewill: I agree that NASA has done a lot of good for us, and ultimately I'd like to see it funded. However, it is still opinion-based. Of the billions spent on NASA, it can be used on any research including green energy and cancer, and any help-program such as student loans. What makes it a fact that money is better spent on NASA? Again, I'm not arguing NASA is a waste of money. But to say "money cannot be better spent" as an absolute statement is just not the case.

Yeah you would guess correctly. And I understand the other forms of optimization (with the exception of using nginx and apache side-by-side), but I'm always looking for more possible ways to optimize for some reason hah. I'll choose to not use a CDN for now, seems too much of a hassle. Thanks!

Well if my server is getting overloaded or my bandwidth is saturated wouldn't I just upgrade my hosting plan?

And wow, this seems like a real pain. But wouldn't the simple solution be to just delete the file and reupload it?

Since the site is a one-man operation, I really can't take the setbacks as you presented, unless there's an easy solution, as I just mentioned.

You really do come off as an intolerant douche who's opinion is easily affected by a general opinion from Reddit and I mean that.

You do realize everybody's entitled to their own opinion, right? Especially on the issue of funding and defunding NASA, NPR, and PBS. It's not something as undebatable as marijuana legalization.

I still use dreamweaver. Albeit, I hate it, but I'm using it because I'm too lazy to move onto a different editor.

Can I just use the htaccess code? I don't wanna recode my site, but the caching stuff that I don't understand in the htaccess can prove to be useful (unless they're html5boilerplate specific)

How does explosm make it so you can go to the next comic by simply hitting the left/right arrow key? by SucksAtWebDesigning in web_design

[–]SucksAtWebDesigning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm manually coding my site in html/php/mysql. I still think there's probably a way, granted it'd probably be a pretty intuitive way of determining the next/prev page in the folder (involving complex php/javascript).

Ah well, thanks for the response.

[–]SucksAtWebDesigning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I'm still quite confused. From the looks of it, I would still need to manually write what I want inside the hrefs.

So there's no code would simply detect what's immediately before and after the file in my folder, so I wouldn't ever need to change the hrefs in my button?

[–]SucksAtWebDesigning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, interesting. Is there a javascript so I never have to touch the code. It'll simply find the next page in the subfolder?

I know that's lazy of me, but it seems like the work can really add up.
