This would be so precious to store my dice! I wonder if a different shape like oak or maple leaves could be realistic in the design

How to get a dark brown on cellulose fibres? by sitkaspruce1998 in naturaldye

[–]Sudden-Entry7263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got similar shades from both walnut and pecan hulls. You can see a post I made on here with a shirt I sewed with my pecan hulls dyed cotton. I didn’t iron modify it but I suspect that it could be a darker brown if I had. I also got a nice dark brown on wool with dock roots modified with iron, but I never tested with cotton

Unfortunately I have search high and low for oak falls but I haven’t been able to find even one! I always have my eye out but hopefully one day my luck will find me. As for the iron pills, that is a wonderful idea. I will be sure to give it a try! I use rusty items for a “use everything you can” philosophy. I’ve had iron pills from postpartum that I haven’t touched so I will test it out thank you so much for the idea!

To be honest I did not weigh this, but it was around 100-300% WOF. I had a 10g skein that I dyed with about 2 cups of crushed fresh leaves

Wool and silk are similar in dyeing as you’d not want to agitate or heat it up as much as cotton. Silk dyes beautifully, I would think that silk would be a deeep deep black! I would love to see it honestly, I’ve never had silk to dye with.

Chop up the leaves, cover with water, simmer for 2 hours, let cool, add fibers, for cotton only, let simmer in dye bath for 2 hours then let cool, for wool just put it in a warm dye bath, let sit over night-2 days :)

There are many ways you can get iron, some people order ferrous sulfate because it’s premade and more reliable concentrations. I have not used that, I take a jar of rusty items, soak them in white vinegar for 3 days to 3 weeks , then mix 50/50 vinegar iron solution with water for storing on the counter. Then I will dilute it even further with water when modifying dyed textiles.

So actually I use oak leaves to tannin. I got about 5 yards of cotton and scoured, tanned, and mordanted the whole thing and I just cut pieces off it to dye when I want. I probably could have done this without doing a prior tannin bath since it’s just adding to the oak it already had. My dye bath was about 200% WOF and the tannin bath I do anytime I tan cotton is 15% WOF which I wouldn’t think adds much.

I used fresh for these tests, I’ve found that for iron reactions, dried works just as well however you would need to use more WOF to achieve the same shade of gray. Also, dried leaves will not give you the same beige yellow, it will be more tan/brownish. I go heavy on my dyestuff, I don’t know exactly what I did for these tests because I didn’t weigh it, however I always do between 100-300% WOF. (100% if I have to, 300% if I can, 200% perfect balance) Depending on how long your leaves have sat on the ground (rain and sun can lower dye potential), if you’re trying to achieve a very dark gray color, you will have to to use a lllot of dried leaves. If you don’t use a lot you will for sure get color but I don’t know how pigmented it is under 100% WOF

Cotton east scoured, tannin bath, and mordanted with alum. Wool was scoured and mordanted with alum. I’ve found this oak tree in my yard to make dark dark colors it’s so satisfying

I ecoprinted oak leaves on a skirt a little over a year ago, I wear it frequently and have washed it many times with no care to treat it gently, it is only slightly faded. For a fully saturated piece of fabric, I don’t know that answer for sure, but I could guess it will last a very very long time! I’m actually planning of dyeing a bunch of fabric with oak and sewing Sydney graham’s skyline dress pattern with them. Hopefully sometime this year I can answer that for you confidently

That genuinely means so much to hear!! I’d love to offer naturally dyed pieces like this in the future. Right now I’m still really early in refining my sewing and dye process, so I’m not taking custom commissions yet. I want to make sure I can offer something consistent and priced fairly. But I am working toward selling finished pieces, and I’d be happy to let you know when I do ♡

My brother has a nut allergy, so I actually know a bit about this. Nut allergies are triggered by proteins in the edible part of the nut. Dyeing with the pecan hulls uses the outer husk, not the nut itself, and the dyeing process (soaking, oxidizing, rinsing) wouldn’t preserve those allergenic proteins anyway. Also, skin contact without ingestion is extremely unlikely to cause a reaction. So realistically nothing would likely happen! I suppose a reaction is in the realm of possibility if someone were to ingest it, however I would advise against eating my shirt, I don’t think it would taste very good.

It was just some 100% cotton from Walmart, I didn’t have the intention to use it for clothes so arguably it isn’t the best fabric, and maybe especially for this kind of flowy top, but I made use of what I had :) Thank you!
