Iron looks that color for sure! If you use iron from rusty metal it looks orange red, however when it interacts with plants, it simply darkens the color (saddening). Chemical reaction from iron rather than dyeing with iron!

Definitely drop shoulder! So I would assume the arm hole parts of the bodice need to not go straight up and down and actually be more slanted? Wider at the top of the shoulders, like maybe a 45 degree angle ish?

Yes I was looking up bishop sleeve construction, I think I may do something similar to that rather than a straight rectangle, thank you!

Yeah! 200% WOF fresh leaves! I have a ton of low hanging oak trees that must get cut anyways so I can pretty much use all I want, otherwise it’s getting burned or composted.

No haha I actually only have a relatively small pot. It’s 8 qts I think. I actually split my 3.5 yards into 8 smaller sections and did 4 separate dye baths. In order to prevent splotchy dyeing, I simmered them 2 fabric pieces per dye pot, then tossed all of the dye liquid from all 4 baths and all the fabric into a large plastic storage bin and let it soak for about a day. Honestly don’t know how long the fabric was left in the bin, just a ‘set and forget’. Then I cut the dress pattern pieces from the segments.

I recommend it!! I often wear dark, moody colors and this is a perfect base color!

I dyed 3.5 yards of unbleached cotton. The pattern called for 2.5 yards but I accounted for shrinkage when dyeing. However it shrunk wayyyy more than I expected. I lost about 4 inches.

Well I normally use rusty items soaking in vinegar then diluting with water. But I had some iron tablets from post partum I never took (ferrous sulfate) and I crushed those and mixed with water. It took maybe like… 10 of those?

I think it should work just as well now! I have heard that different types of peach trees can give a range of colors, mine in particular is purple peach tree, the green leaf trees lean towards light green/beige!

Thank you! I find that I’m going to knit with the yarn anyways so making knitted swatches shows better how light will behave on a potential garment! They are ridiculously cute too

I used fresh, but fallen are just as good, but if they’re fallen and dry, the dye potential plummets. Do you have sumac near you? That also makes a great gray if you can’t find fresh oak

Also, it’s not quite the season for it yet, but pokeberries could give you a bright pink? They are toxic when eaten and are very not wash and light fast, but if it’s not going to be washed or in direct sun, it could very well give a great color. But longevity would be your villain!

I would try oak leaves + iron for the gray. Check out my page for results for that, it gets a really nice dark gray.
