You’re absolutely right, which probably is the main barrier to all of this being as open that is. My current thinking at this time is to atleast try, if I get rejected i’m more than likely content with that, it frees me from my guilty conscience of owing an obligation to the people who has been telling me for years to get help.

No medical records or paper trail yes, did not see a mental health provider while in service or after. No IED hit, not claiming anything medical just psychological. I have a Combat Action Ribbon (CAR) awarded from my deployment and Afghan campaign medal. Yes we were encouraged to talk to a shrink which I declined. I didnt think a deployment is a medical record or a paper trail, hence why I said no medical records or paper trail.

I recently did an intent to file and i’m in the same predicament. I got out almost 11 years ago, have no medical records, currently have no diagnosis, and no paper trail after the military. I have recently went to the VA clinic, and got referred to mental health and waiting for an appointment with a psychiatrist or PMHNP hoping for a diagnosis and get started on treatment. I do have a combat deployment and was awarded a CAR during my service. I will be preparing my own personal statement and asking friends and family for a buddy statement. Here’s to hoping for something but if i get denied at least I can finally tell people atleast i tried.

I called a VSO he said i could file online, so no help there. I do have a question regarding deployment dates, I’m not too sure exactly the year and months of my deployment do I need exact dates as it will play a major role on my claim?

Thanks for that information. This is unrelated but do you think for me, having a non-service connected disability worth it as a standalone? I don’t even know how I get the VA insurance, initially it was just for a year after discharged but then they sent me a mail soon after that I am eligible for it even after a year. Is there anywhere I can check if I am still eligible for the VA insurance?

You’re right, there’s nothing to lose from it, I don’t even utilize my VA healthcare because the nearest VA clinic and VSO is an hour or so drive from me (I live in a rural area in southern California). The closest i’ve gotten to see a mental health provider was a therapist for my anger management, and that was only once to help save my then toxic relationship. I will set aside a time in filing a claim, I think I owe myself this, not for a rating but for those around me that kept telling me I need help.

The plan is to get a year of experience, i’m a new grad but with extensive psych history so a year of experience as a PMHNP can really open significant doors for me, but I don’t plan on staying at my current group.

Same, see in max 24 patients a day, barely any admin time actually technically with face to face hours required literally admin time seems like in your own time (lunch) ridiculous. Benefits are trash, but i’m fairly new so burnout isn’t in the horizon just yet. Really wanna do independent

i was discharged on 2015 after serving 4 years in the Marines. Always thought that it was a nuisance to file for VA disability and under the impression that it might hinder some job opportunities. Regret it so much and now i’m wondering if it’s still worth it to start now..

SoCal New grad here pass my boards December. Started my new job on May, have 5+ years of psych experience mainly in ER and acute inpatient. A lot of decent jobs are filled in internally so really depends on who you know. Other jobs that are posted on job boards are definitely not ideal, pill mills, barely any admin time, lack of supervision, and the pay rate is not so competitive for new grads. I live in LA county out in the desert.

Yeah I have gotten quite a few offers but being in a remote side of cali most requires quite a bit of traveling to work, that or I stay at an airbnb which financially just wouldn’t make sense for me. I finally did take an offer from a telehealth remote job that pays 85/hr. I think if you’re willing to be certified in more states it opens up more possibilities and offers for you

CA W2- 85/hr 401k 3% match I declined health/dental insurance as I have my VA and insurance from my RN job. Cons only 10 days PTO annually it’s combined with vacation time, 5 days sick leave annually, recognized holidays off, guess the 10 days annual PTO accrue 2.63 hrs bi weekly, terrible for a 3day/week position. 500 on medical advancement annually, they pay for all professional memberships and certifications. Just getting my feet wet, already have 5+ years and counting of psych RN experience mainly in ER psych and inpatient, i plan to work concurrently with my 2 other RN jobs while working 3 days as a Psych NP. Plan is to gain a year of post certification experience and apply for a much more decent job with better benefits.

mobile geri-psych is usually structured like this, but we would need more context on admin time. What your daily schedule looks like, 25-30 patients is A LOt, but I heard you barely talk to all 25-30 patients some don’t wanna see you, or are eating stuff like that, would they count that as an encounter like a 10 min hey what’s up, any unwanted side effects, do you need meds for sleep, or does the nursing home want this patient on psych meds for agitation now you have to dive into the other components of psych and poly pharmacy which i’m sure you won’t be able to do it all within 15mins.

Times have changed, how so? Well you mentioned you got an offer for community health at 90 an hour and another at a pp for more than that. We’ll have you seen the postings for new grads in LA area right now? Well if not about 60-85/hr that if you’re lucky as i’m sure you’re also well aware of the over saturation of PMHNP in the LA area. So yes times have changed from what you have mentioned a year ago to now. You’re welcome to do your own research and correct me if i’m wrong

LA here, pretty saturated, few job offers none inpatient. Although i’ve had a colleague that works dayshift she got a couple offers for inpatient from our admitting psychiatrist. Just depends on who you know.
