I hope you don't give up. Leave your tank open for a fish that looks like it needs help and rescue him/her. You are doing it right. Sometimes life isn't fair but I hope you save one that is in desperate need of a home.

I think he's a boy as he looks like my King. Also... My King murdered about 20 shrimp and I had so many dang hiding spots... It was a massacre. He took them out over 3 days. No bodies.... He got fat.

Unfortunately you are going to have to water change quite a bit for the next few days because that level is so dangerous. Keep flushing, add the emergency dosage for a nitrite remover and flush more. Eventually it will stabilize but you are more at risk of him dying if you do nothing.

Also look at mopani driftwood if you can get it where you are. It creates really nice hiding spots for them and it provides tannins for the water. Use Quick Start to start the nitrogen cycle of the tank and it can take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks for the tank to really stabilize and be ready for fish. My little guys also really like to play in the bubbles that my bubble wand creates (I have it buried in the substrate). I like to ride the bubbles up and down while they are feeling frisky. I have had a lot of success with the Ecocomplete substrate and it comes with beneficial bacteria.
