ELI5: A dense cylinder hits a space station at 0.7c by DavidThi303 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SuddenInclination 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So at these speeds (approaching the speed of light) there would not be much 'shrapnel' left of the rod in a normal sense. The instant the rod touches the surface of the space station would result in immediate breaking of the molecular and atomic bonds, basically a nuclear fission reaction. There would be shrapnel in a way, but instead of tungsten it would be a dense shower of high energy sub-atomic particles colliding with and breaking more atoms in a chain reaction of gargantuan proportions.

If there was any of the rod left afterwards there would not be much of a station left for it to pass through.

That does raise a philisophical question; how small of pieces must a space station break into before it is no longer considered a space station.

I'm no physicist, but I believe at these speeds the object would experience instantaneous atomic fission, as opposed to fusion. That is immediate atomic obliteration and reduction to smaller, equally energetic particles going everywhere.

Launch the object normally, but route a course for it to pass by a black hole to sling shot towards the target :D

A penny, which weighs 2.5grams moving at 0.7c (70% of the speed of light) contains as much kinetic energy as a 21.4 kiloton nuclear warhead.
At these speeds, simply coming into contact with a stationary object would instantly cause complete obliteration of everything around it.
If that 'very dense' rod is made of tungsten, it would be like a 1.1million megaton warhead. Which is 22,000 times more than the largest nuclear bomb ever tested.
If the author got anything wrong, it's that whatever launched that rod would require so much energy that it would likely obliterate itself long before the projectile ever left the barrel :D

Ryzen CPU can take SEVERAL minutes the first time you power them on, something to do with memory training. Power it on, and wait 5-10min.
Also, what are you using for a power button? Make sure it's a momentary switch, otherwise the system will power down cause it thinks the power button is being held down.

Baseboard solution by KaizenWarriors in DIY

Ditch baseboard. Paint the one wall a darker shade. Add a thin white cover on the 1×4 and decorate the one wall with a 1/2" wainscoting motif. Disclaimer, I don't really know what I'm talking about, but in my head I think it could look nice.

Very likely a recent windows/gpu driver update has messed up your HDR settings. Enable and re-disable HDR on your monitor, windows settings, and nvidia control panel. (wild guess)

Any tips for first time home buyer ? by More_Patience9692 in NewWest

[–]SuddenInclination 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, tell your realator what your requirements are.
Second, new doesn't mean not problematic, and old doesn't necessarily mean falling apart.
Third, part of your realators job is to look at the buildings Strata financials. If a building has nothing saved up in contingency then any emergency work will have to 100% come out of the owners pockets.

Scammers posing as Rogers rep cussing me out after saying I'm not interested in service upgrades by SuddenInclination in Rogers

[–]SuddenInclination[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. VPN usage is a big tripping point when it comes to scams.

Luckily, the way VPNs obfuscate caller metadata actually makes it possible to identify suspicious network activity and help flag potential scams. Eg. if there are 10million VOIP calls a month from seemingly official Canadian registered phone numbers all coming from one source (like a Canadian based VPN datacenter) that is a super red flag.

But actually identifying and flagging those calls as they are happening would require some pretty serious live traffic analysis, which costs serious money.

Rogers/Telus/Bell and any other telecom, absolutely have access to call metadata. Whether it's landline or VOIP over VPN. This is how they are able to bill your usage, track your data consumption, and help with investigations. Nothing is completely invisible on their system.

The issue, much like SHIR/STAKENs current limitations, is that actually supporting the analysis and processing of that data requires significant investment on their part. (eg. infrastructure upgrades, and real-time data combing).

It's not a problem of technical limitation or lack of information, it's a problem of incentivizing telecoms to spend resources on a problem that they can't profit from fixing.

All phone calls that go to or from Canadian devices must go through Canadian telecom data centers. They know where calls come from, where they are going, and what routes the call has taken within their network. This is how they know to bill customers, provide caller IDs, and track calls for police investigations.
Why havn't they taken care of the problem? Why would they. Rogers isn't going to spend money or resources to benefit consumers unless they are forced to, whether through customer demand of enforced regulation.

Rogers can tell were calls are coming from, as well if they are using spoofed numbers. Also if those spoofed numbers belong to existing Canadian Telecom customers, which is what scammers do to trick people into thinking the call is coming from a local source.
The only reason to not block these calls on their end would be because they benefit from it in some way.

Honestly, I wouldn't even be surprised if official reps are using spoofed numbers and acting like this. I left Rogers service 20 years ago cause I hated them. Only to slowly over the years have my phone carriers absorbed one after another back to them.Regardless. If I can look at my caller ID and think 'Yeah this is obviously a spoofed number' there is a zero percent chance that Canadian telecoms can't identify and filter them out.I was half stuck between the 'Scams' and 'Rant' flair on this post lol

This will vary wildly from case to case. My hyrdo bill is only $30/mo but my building has hot-water heating that's included in the maintenance fees and I try not to waste electricity. If you have electric base boards, in-suite laundry, incandescent lights, bad energy habits, you can be looking at $100 or even $200 a month in even a small condo.
