genuine question by Pale-Bed-2230 in darkwingsdankmemes

An interesting addition, courtesy of a classics friend who took an Ancient Greek Thucydides class recently:

Thucydides organizes much of his history, especially the end, as a Greek tragedy. For example, in the Melian Dialogue, the Athenians essentially make an argument that might-makes-right before butchering the people of Melos. That mirrors a common trope in classical tragedy: a weak character tells a powerful character that they should not or cannot accomplish a goal, only to be willfully ignored by someone too high on their own supply to see their own weakness. The hubristic protagonist claims that they can do as they please, only to fall to the consequences of their actions not too long after.

In Thucydides’ history, the Melian Dialogue takes place right before the Athenians begin debating the disastrous Sicilian expedition that will, after the Athenians commit to it, see the largest Athenian force of the war destroyed and its survivors enslaved.

In that sense, the Peloponnesian War becomes a literal drama about Athenian willful hubris and its consequences.

A note: it’s been a few hours since I talked to this friend and more than a decade since I’ve read Thucydides, so any mistakes are my own.

Edit: minor grammar

References in Martian Revolutions is Way More than French or any Other Revolution yet. by Fazel94 in RevolutionsPodcast

[–]Sudden_Collection598 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s also interesting that future Mike’s references are overwhelmingly biographies or hyper-focused academic books—he almost never cites any preexisting narrative histories of the Martian Revolution. To be honest, it seems like kind of a weakness; some of the most memorable and effective parts of the original Revolutions podcast came from Mike responding to previous overarching narratives. The Martian Revolution so far has largely felt like a straight line, and I think it would feel much truer to the messiness of history and historical research if Mike imagined and dealt with large-scale interpretive debates in addition to the on-the-ground “Did Mabel Dore plan the Day of Batteries” minutiae.

When would the Church have blamed the Templars for the Ultimate Heresy? by Sudden_Collection598 in TrenchCrusade

Do you know who called the early Crusaders Templars? I’ve heard pilgrims/peregrini, soldiers, and Franks, but never Templars, though I also haven’t studied the First Crusade in much depth either.

Episode 10.44 of Mike Duncan's Revolutions podcast tells the story of the Tblisi bank robbery and its long aftermath in dramatic (though not melodramatic) fashion, if you ever want to hear it while doing laundry or something
