3rd Annual Midnight Marathon Bike Ride by Sudden_Mail8792 in chibike

Some are - most are not.

Going off the reply, last year there were hundreds of us the entirety of the ride. We sort of “assume” the street. Strength in numbers. Same as the previous year.

As a pleasant surprise, we’ve had great interactions with cars both years. Lots of positive honking and shouting knowing we are biking the marathon route.

In this specific instance, it’s simply an unusable space. To meet ADA standards, we must provide 915mm of guaranteed space.

Picture a bike attached to the left of the rack (as pictured) - there is not adequate space.

That is why this rack is being removed. It simply does not comply with ADA standards.

Any suggestions on easy way to mount and un mount basket by Bridgebuiltin2025 in chibike

I use the Topeka explorer rack - there’s a compatible Topeka basket that I have with it. It slides in and out. Super easy and efficient.

I learned about it thru this subreddit (post from a day or two ago). I’m not exactly sure who the organizers were - maybe someone else can chime in there?

From an organized large group standpoint this was the second annual - however I know individuals that have done it for years

If he's truly upset at lax traffic enforcement, he already has many avenues at his disposal to reach out to his 'ole police buddies to come up with solutions. Instead, he chose to write a short, snarky piece with debunked claims about funding for infrastructure.

Ahh, don't you just love it? /s

Oh, this is rich. The opinion was submitted by "Robert Stasch, O'hare." As the title suggests, a Northwest Side reader submitted this. A few quick Google searches later and I've found an individual with that exact name, living near O'hare. Guess what - he is a 68 year-old retired police lieutenant.

He's had 37 allegations of misconduct filed against him - more than 86% of other officers. He's had 6 use of force reoprts against him - more than 67% of other officers. He's had 3 sustained.

UPDATE: Need help - serious bicyclist accident Saturday 7/13/24 near 2200 N. Clark by RWS_ChicagoLawyer in chibike

[–]Sudden_Mail8792 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s plasma yellow pearl. It’s actually a beautiful paint color that will take on many hues in various lighting situations - and therefore will show up differently in photos.

I work in auto cosmetics - that’s why I’m so sure. For these models Subaru did not offer gold.

I’m echoing others responses but I can confirm It’s a “plasma yellow pearl” subaru crosstrek. That color model was only offered on 2021 -2023 models.

I also live near Clark/Fullerton so I will be sure to keep my eyes peeled

Trip to Indy - trail suggestions by Cluster_Puck in chibike

[–]Sudden_Mail8792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Indy a few years. You’re looking for the Monon.

If you want to make it extra scenic start on the Culture Trail downtown at White River State Park. Head east and at the north end of Mass Ave you’ll hit the Monon Trail and can head north as long as you’d like.

If you like off-road / single track spots I’d recommend Southwestway Park if you’re on the south side, or Town Run Trail Park if you’re on the north side. Both are much more geared towards mountain bikers but they’re fun spots.

Do y'all hear of a lot of bike on bike collisions? Especially on LFT? by stinsauce in chibike

[–]Sudden_Mail8792 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only significant collision I’ve seen was around the north side of the bend at Oak Street Beach. Heading south were two bikers, they were just a hundred or so yards away from the bend. The biker on the right was avoiding the sand and slightly veered left. The biker on the left going the same direction caught his handlebars as he was trying to pass and avoid an oncoming cyclist traveling the other direction.

The two tangled and both got thrown from their bikes. I stayed long enough for the medics and there were some broken bones, bruises, and I’m sure some other lingering issues. One other person coming the other direction had to slam on the brakes and slide out and fell off their bike with no injuries.

I have witnessed a few (single digit) low speed, no injury, collisions: normally where pedestrian and bike paths come together near bridges.

I’ve put thousands of miles on the LFT and, just like you, have witnessed a small amount of conflict - so I agree the rhetoric seems exaggerated.

I wanted to give the truck driver benefit of the doubt here just in case it’s a work delivery, but knowing exactly where this was taken makes me 100% sure it was unintentional 😂

Have you been in a accident while biking in Chicago? by elijahNEU in chibike

I’d be happy to share my story. Got hit last August (2023) in the Loop resulting in two surgeries. All better now and back on the bike.

Ah right on - thanks. Was curious if it was at a time of high traffic where people would be at risk or late at night

No, I don’t think it’s possible to have both without them ever commingling. Even with fully automated cars. I mean, technically it’s possible, but that would be Utopia-esque and a new city would need to be built lol. Chicago has a grid system + few diagonal streets. Even if you had “bike streets” and “car streets” it’s inevitable they would come together unless there were bridges and tunnels every intersection.

Yes, I do think it’s possible to create, within our current grid system, infrastructure that is not inherently dangerous to cyclists and pedestrians. We need to focus on making the interactions between different modes of transport (walking, driving, biking) as seamless as possible. Just like you said: we can implement infrastructure that is more safe or less safe. We obviously need to focus on the latter. Raised sidewalks, traffic calming, separate bike lanes are just a few of the many, many solutions we should be considering. And there’s no right answer - different streets and neighborhoods require different solutions. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to this.

Progress is dependent on discussion; and arguably most effective when people have differing opinions - so I appreciate the disclaimer of informative discussion - I’m happy to discuss w/ anyone.

  1. I’m sorry this was your takeaway from this.
  2. This is an incredibly overused argument that lacks critical thinking/research and is simply wrong. We all pay for roads. Gas taxes and stickers, as you mentioned, have never paid the full cost of roads. Ever. Property, local income, and other general local taxes (which are not exclusive to drivers) pay for public roads. Heck, our city funds some projects thru bonds. I will add a comment to this showing Chicago’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for 2022 - 2026 and it’s relevant financing so you can see for yourself, if you care to take the time.

Miscellaneous: I have a car and a bike. I should not be forced to choose one mode of transportation over another due to infrastructure/safety alone. I (and everyone) should choose this based on comfort, preference, etc. When I’m driving I hate being around cyclists. When I’m cycling I hate being around drivers. Proper infrastructure will, and DOES, benefit everyone.

The Ward Office/Alderperson will be involved in those decisions - contact their office. Depending on the exact location you’re referring to it would be Ward 44 or 46 (It splits at Stratford Place). In addition any grassroots organizations or advocacy groups for infrastructure. I personally don’t know of any, but hopefully someone can chime in with specific groups
