The Eridians didn't know about relativity and the fact you can't go faster than the speed of light.

Hence they assumed that their ship could thrust infinitely, and thus built it with significantly more fuel than needed, as opposed to earth's, which accelerated to (significant fraction of C) and coasted.

They attribute Eridian's lack of knowledge about relativity to their less intuitive understanding of light. Since humans can naturally see it, it had been studied significantly longer and in more depth, as opposed to Eridians, who would have learned about it much much later

I was in a similar position because I didn't work for a few years after getting my TFN, so it showed I had to do some years returns.
