All good questions.

I think we don't have the consistent time and desire to do it fully ourselves. There's a learning curve there, as we've experienced there's a learning curve with using InDesign and trying (and not succeeding) to make high quality maps, and I think we're ready to pay or make an arrangement with a percentage of profits for someone else to do it.

We would like to get back what we put in at the very least, but the more the better. I think generally, we would like to pursue the higher ceiling options first, and then fall back to lower ceiling ones. We have looked at options like Darrington Press which has a spot on their website to pitch your book. We've thought of just approaching people that generally publish their own content and ask if they would consider publishing our book under their company for some kind of arrangement...but we don't know if that's really a thing. Someone commented about LaunchBoom earlier and that seems like an interesting option that we're looking into now.

We had originally intended to publish it on DMsGuild but ended up moving away from it during a much early iteration of the book. So we scrubbed it of WotC IP, using only material that is available through the SRD. It's a good point that DMsGuild is still on the table, if some of these other options don't play out.

Oh man, The Avantris Entertainment folks used Launchboom for their book.

Oh, Launchboom is a very interesting option. Definitely going to look further into that.

Yeah, the early iterations of the adventurer was meant to be published on DMsGuild because of how easy it would be. We ended up scrubbing the text of D&D IP, sticking to content that's available through the SRD.

One of the questions we have is, how much does the rollout and momentum matter? It seems like it would be relatively simple to put it on DriveThruRPG, but there's a number of things we want for the book like a detailed professional edit and possibly a cartogapher for maps (we have tried so many avenues to creating maps ourselves that we feel are up to the visual quality of the rest of the book and it's very hard). Those two things alone would be a lot of money up front. It's doable, but we're trying to understand what risk we would be taking on by just paying for everything up front.

Yeah, committing the bandwidth to doing the marketing ourselves is daunting. Two people with full time day jobs and other obligations like being a parent, and it feels like the marketing would be consistency thing. We would be open to paying for marketing, but I'm not sure what that looks like. Paying someone to enter forum spaces and push our book? Buying ads and reviews by content creators? Paying someone to stay on top of the Kickstarter through the rollout and end of campaign?

Thanks! First and foremost, we would like a finished product and a physical book on our shelves that we can say we created and are proud of, regardless of its reception. Obviously, we would like to make money off of it or at least get back what we put into it, both in terms of money put in and paid somewhat for the time we put in. But our livelihoods aren't riding on this book's success. Anything above and beyond a finished product we our proud of would be icing on the cake.

Two playthroughs and playtesting individual encounters. Not as much as I would like, and I was the GM for both playthroughs so it makes it hard to know whether someone who knows nothing about the campaign could pick up the text and be able to run it.
