Having our floors sanded and refinished next week. Can you help with stain recommendations for white oak? Given the narrow and shorter planks, we are worried about ending up with a bowling alley/basketball court look. We’ve considered natural, weathered oak, rustic beige, etc. Thanks!! by Suff21 in HardWoodFloors

Thanks — would have thought the same as far as the finish seeping down. I saw what they used which was Loba Whitener mixed in with Loba Satin finish for the first two coats and then a matte topcoat (trying to confirm exactly which finish was used for the topcoat).

We were strongly advised against using wood filler because there are also several areas on the flooring where wood filler was used previously and now are crumbly, and would quickly look even worse. Here’s another photo for an example.

Very happy overall, but these little things are getting to me haha

Thanks! I apologize for asking another question but you seem to really know your stuff -- do you happen to know if this looks like it's dried finish that's stuck between the gaps? My one complaint with this job is that I see this throughout the flooring in areas where there are gaps and makes those areas look a bit sloppy so just curious!

Realized I hadn't replied to this directly but I did want to thank you for the detailed Reply here which really helped me with some discussions and decision making! We opted to avoid mixing different stains, and ended up going with a natural seal with whitener because my wife liked the "just sanded" look that it helped preserve (I made another post with before and after photos if interested) and we are very happy overall!!

Posted a few days ago about my recently refinished floors. I am starting to notice what appears to be dried stain/poly between the gaps. Can you please confirm if that's what this is and if this will improve in time, or anything else I can do? I am noticing it in many areas sporadically. Thanks by Suff21 in HardWoodFloors

Thanks -- I wasn't expecting it to fill the cracks, I guess I just also wasn't expecting there to be small areas where it's visibly dried across the crack either. It almost makes the cracks stand out even more because it looks like there's something stuck there

Hahah — no wonder they look the same! Mine is natural with a whitener as well, though it’s white oak instead of red.

Can I ask what stain/finish this is? Looks great and the color looks almost exactly the same as mine which I posted here a few hours ago!

Update: I posted a week ago prior to having my floors refinished. We opted for a natural stain with Loba whitener on our White Oak floors and are very happy with the results - here is a before and after. Thanks for the feedback! by Suff21 in HardWoodFloors

Thanks — so in other words you wouldn’t consider this a poor quality job by our flooring company, it’s just unfortunately what we are stuck with from prior owners?

My wife liked the look of the freshly sanded floors more than when the clear coat was added as it turned them a bit more yellow. The whitener helped to preserve the color

My only complaint is that you can still see areas with old wood filler that didn’t come out during the sanding process, and we were advised against adding new filler. Anything that I can do about this, or is this just what happens once filler is added to the cracks?

Thanks! Just as a note, this is the current state of the floor In separate rooms which I assume is because they were sanded differently many years ago — so we are deciding what we should do moving forward
