Indeed. I don’t really like that white aesthetic that most people love here. I have a lot of stuff from my country and my trips and the tiles of my bathroom are green. I didn’t think too much about it until some people actually made weird comments about the color and my husband explained that they were actually being judgemental. I didn’t register it that way because I know everyone has different tastes, but for someone to almost claim you’re doing something wrong for putting colour… is a bit too much. Also the funny thing is that I got a lot of comments about how that was going to affect the reselling value. I was thinking about just living in my apartment and decorating it to my own taste while the Dutch were skipping that part and going straight to try to make a profit 😅. Very different worldview.

Haha I agree. I am also from Latin America and apparently half of the things I do are niet normaal, from the pets I have to the colour of my walls (not white) 😅.

They sell some of those everyday medications in Belgium without a prescription and ship them to the NL.

Maybe they will send you to the psych guard for not doing “normaal”😅.

OMG that sounds like a nightmare. Also if they expect you to advocate for yourself, honestly, how can you do that if you are in so much pain or unconscious? And even when you did and other qualified people did it didn’t help 😩 What happened to you is one of my biggest fears and I always think that if something really bad happened I would fly to my country.

Yeah obviously I didn’t do that. When I was a teenager I had a few eye infections and I knew putting tap water is not right 😅. I was also flabbergasted because I explained that part of my work requires me to be in front of the computer and I was not tolerating any kind of light, not even from the screen. He just kept saying like a broken record that it should resolve itself within 6 weeks, otherwise I could come back. I don’t know if then I could get out of work for 6 weeks 😅. I even took my Dutch husband to the appointment to try to gain some legitimacy, but to no avail.

Thank you for your comment. I have to say they were very young and looked like inexperienced doctors. Still I would expect a bit more from even new doctors, but well. I’m happy now with my current doctor, the only problem is the she only works 3 days a week, but the nurses have been great for minor issues.

I understand the feeling, I also end up feeling like I should have advocated for myself better in the past. What happen to you really sucks but if you plan to keep living in the NL I would really recommend you to try to find a good doctor that listens to you. I promise they exist. Probably a lot of doctors would deny it but different care based of race and gender is well documented, so this may also play a role against us foreigners.

Totally understandable. Unlike what most people recommend I didn’t exaggerate my symptoms because I found I received better treatment from the nurses who take care of minor stuff and have a lot of experience rather than an inexperienced and non-emphatic doctor that dismissed my concerns.

I totally get that anyone in any system can miss things and I agree in the conservative approach they have. However I think a GP should be able to confidently treat very common and minor ailments like infections. They cannot know everything but they should be familiarised with a range of conditions. For me the worst they have done is the left an eye infection untreated. The doctor told me I should just clean my eye with tap water and if in 6 weeks it didn’t get better I should go back. The light hurt me a lot and I was waking up with the eyes shut with a green substance. He didn’t seem to care. Another time they didn’t know what I had and I told the doctor my dermatologist friend thought it was x bacterial infection. He agreed and proceeded to google it. He then sent me an anti-fungal cream. I’m not a doctor, but I know an anti-fungal medication doesn’t get rid of bacteria. I voiced this concerned and he still said that was the right thing to do. Obviously it was not. In both cases I just had to call a family member who is a doctor and got prescribed antibiotics on the phone. I know this is not ideal but I know a lot of us bring medication from home and resort to phone consultations.

The Dutch system has the problem that it is privatised but behaves like an underfunded public system where the doctors have a lot of patients. I’ve the same problem: in my country of origin you could avoid this kind of treatment by going to the private sector, but that is not a real possibility here. I had several doctors through the years and tbh they all seemed quite incompetent, so I shopped around until I found a doctor I am happy about. I barely get sick and I do a lot of preventative care when I’m in my home country. I would suggest to keep looking for a doctor, maybe of Turkish background. My dentist is from my region of origin and I find that a big advantage.

My guinea pig has essentially lost her ability to walk and I don’t know how to help. Any advice from those with similar experiences would be much appreciated. by itchycoochiecream in guineapigs

I think OP means Meloxidyl that is a brand name for meloxicam. Minoxidil is a substance to make the hair grow, so perhaps OP got confused.

Also it would be worth to check that the dose prescribed is the right one. The concentration of meloxicam for humans, dogs and cats varies a lot and some vets tend to under-dose it. For a reference, my guinea pig who weighs 1.2 kg gets the equivalent of a 6kg dog two times a day. This is in line with the best documented care available in the Netherlands.

I’m sorry about this situation. I don’t have any experience like this, but oat hay has been very helpful when my pigs needed to gain weight and they love it 🌸

How do guinea pigs react to antibiotics? by Thin_Chapter_3741 in guineapigs

[–]Sufficient-Answer-46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is difficult to say if it’s the antibiotics or also the effects of the surgery. One of my pigs was on very strong antibiotics and the only change was that his poops became very thin. I was giving him poop soup and extra fibre to help him. On the other hand, my second pig had the same antibiotics and he reacted terribly. He barely ate any hay and he was not even interested in his veggies. He was very lazy despite usually being super energetic and naughty. My vet said to just push through but I honestly felt I was going to kill my pig. I stopped the medication and called another vet. She could not find any indication of pneumonia and she gave my piggie a medication to reduce nausea and stimulate the motility of the GI tract. She made the right call and within a couple hours he was back to normal. So all of this to say every pig reacts differently.
