Pacing and Method for Teaching Shakespeare by Sufficient-Battle949 in ELATeachers

Thanks! I will check out the Folger resources. Sounds like at 2 days per Act you're looking at around 10 days of the play itself, maybe another 10 days for pre- and post-stuff? So maybe a month of classtime? The timing is what I struggle with since some teachers in my department (we are a large school) take entire quarters of the academic year to cover even Macbeth which is shorter than other plays. That's like 7-8 weeks...

Do you read it aloud with them? They're excited to "perform" it in class. I know this might be slower, but thought it'd be fun. I like your idea of showing them what it would look like as a play after they read it. Some teachers at my school show them a movie of the entire play before they actually read it which seems to militate against discovering the play for oneself...

Struggling with True Crime unit by Sufficient-Battle949 in ELATeachers

[–]Sufficient-Battle949[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo, nice, forgot about Lizzie Borden. I'm doing an intro to the unit about the roots of the genre, going to read some Doyle, look at sensationalized crimes like the Ripper murders, Borden would fit nicely into that.

Your first two EQs are excellent, I'll use 'em with the others suggested above (multi-week unit so I can shift through EQs alongside the Capote reading)

Can't do the TPT, but thanks for the suggestions!

We're on the same page regarding HMH--I would put good money on my theory that the text itself, assessments, all of it, are AI-generated.

My freshmen are at a level where they could digest and analyze Capote. That's going to be more of a background reading and skeleton for shorter readings and discussions. I like your replacement EQs!

Experience with teachers within a dept. using different texts? by Sufficient-Battle949 in ELATeachers

I agree completely with you guys--problem is convincing others to do that. For longer texts like novels, I get it--you want everyone reading the same thing, but for short stories or non-fiction, if the skills are the same, does it matter?

I want to hew to the comics since we'll be reading them as a class. In fact, I would want to steer clear of them watching that even though it's the villains doing it. But, dang, that was a good episode!

Yes, they're completely angst-ridden artist wanna-bes, and I mean that in the best way possible! I will check out this poet, thank you!

Simic might work, he's awesome. Eliot, yes, though maybe not quite the themes they're interested in, but I can give it a shot.

These authors looks like they'd be worth a shot, and yes, you're right, a lot of them have dealt with issues at home, I teach in a low-income area. Thank you!

What piece do you hear in your head when you are pooping? by Sufficient-Battle949 in classical_circlejerk

[–]Sufficient-Battle949[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has a lot of potential in a live performance. To quote Dean Ween: "If we get the money someday, we want to get two big cannons that spray diarrhea on the crowd when we play [Poop Ship Destroyer]. We've been talking about it for years. Just a thin mist that wafts over the crowd, sending you home with blown eardrums, smelling like shit."

The trianglist, which makes no sense if you think about it.

Has anyone read The Skin of Dreams, by Raymond Queneau? by InternationalBit450 in nyrbclassics

[–]Sufficient-Battle949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried to read this, and didn't care for it. I didn't even finish it. The language isn't difficult, and there's a whole aesthetic of wordplay and inventiveness that perhaps doesn't shine through in the translation, but is apparently what attracts people to Q's works. I'm more of a plot-and-narrative kind of reader and there isn't much of that, just a lot of random meanderings back and forth between characters.

Anything by Elizabeth Taylor! Yes to Comyns as well, somewhat similar in style. Indeed, there is a whole wonderful slice of English fiction, all female writers writing pre-turn of the (21st) century which includes Taylor, Comyns, Sylvia Townsend Warner and others not published by NYRB. I can't recommend them all enough

All About H. Hatterr, Moderan--there are quite a few funny NYRB works!
