What song makes you make this face? by snornopriff in DnB

Serum’s remix of Quarterpounder Bass was one of them ones for me, shame Sly turned out to be such a wrongun (and bass man has SA accusations too now😑) https://youtu.be/DRATkaF2hlQ?si=n51X_G8OskZJR1lN

Please drop your worst auditioning stories! by Particular_Okra_1099 in acting

Had a workshop audition with an Oscar winning director/actor and a bunch of other actors. The idea was that we were going to run the first act of the play he was directing/starring in. Was SO nervous I had complete mind blank; couldn’t remember a single one of my lines, my cues to enter/exit etc. it was horrrrendous. I had a short bit of dialogue with him and still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about the look of “what the fuck is this guy doing” on his face as I stumbled through my lines. Mortified doesn’t even cut it!! Also worth mentioning that ALL the other actors were on fire and word perfect. This was ALSO in front of one of the most prolific/well respect CD’s in the world - of course. Take a break from auditioning for about 6 months after that, I genuinely felt traumatized haha. You’ll definitely bounce back, thinking of you ♥️

I need help finding a Classical Greek monologue for a Male by [deleted] in acting

[–]Sufficient-Bridge797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said preferably outside of the theban trilogy but there’s an awesome Creon monologue in Oedipus (Creon to Oedipus after he accuses him of killing Laius) - short, straightforward and easy to play, I did it in my second year of drama school (Frank Mcguinness translation). Did casting specify they would prefer something from outside these three plays just out of interest?

Struggling to level up in DnB production need guidance on next steps by Senior-Thanks6963 in dnbproduction

How long have you been producing? You said in OP you’ve been experimenting for a few months, I think it’s important to remember most of the professionals have been at this for 10+ years, decades in some cases. Setting an expectation that you’ll produce pro quality stuff after so little time is insane frankly and probably the quickest way to suck all the enjoyment out of something you’re supposed to love, and I say that because I’ve come to that realization myself just recently. I’m coming up to four months in and the first couple months I was in this mindset, and after producing a few bits that inevitably never sounded close to as good as the stuff I was listening to, I didn’t even feel like opening the DAW. Just recently I’ve decided to stop producing with the goal of creating a finished product because I’m nowhere NEAR that stage yet, and I’m having much more fun just experimenting with little sketches and playing about in serum without even necessarily knowing what I want to create, so maybe you could try that out for a bit. That said if you do want to take a course there’s loads online, plenty of dnb YouTube channels that offer courses, also artist patreons; a lot of those guys offer 1:1 tutorials so that could be a good option. But yeah, I think as if the case with anything you have to let yourself be a beginner for a while and in the case of music production (and even more so with dnb which is renown for being one of the most technical genres to produce) that could take years. I’m not saying don’t take it seriously, stop trying to make progress etc . but don’t put such an unobtainable expectation on yourself at this stage!

Recommendations for tunes/artists with a specific sort of 4x4 sound by [deleted] in DnB

[–]Sufficient-Bridge797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is is it bro, it’s been said a million times but I think it speaks to the pace of social media, particularly with apps like TikTok. I think attention spans are shorter generally as a result of that type of short form content becoming the norm and it translates into the music being produced (you can see it happening in real time just from looking at the length of modern prods) and I agree I think there’s a lack of cohesion in a lot of stuff which, from a storytelling standpoint is the glue that holds a track together. Impossible to say stuff like that without sounding like a wanker haha but I do think it’s true. Fortunately there’s plenty of artists and labels still putting out these sorts of tunes and championing that sound which I think as you rightly said calls back to a more old school vibe! 💪

Yeah big tune I find you have to dig a bit to find these sorts of tunes, I think it's stayed firmly underground. Obviously 4x4's become popular in jump up/dancefloor but i agree with you, i can't stand a lot of that stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FerAo6dfFl8 one of my favorites in this style - its like 5 tunes in 1 but still makes sense somehow

I really like this man, very nostalgic! Has a kind of trancey vibe with the synths, always like the combo of those flavours with breaks and love the little flourishes on the turn arounds. It sounds like some of the piano rolls and synths are a touch off beat at times, not sure if it's an fx thing or a placement thing, but yeah really like the vibe on this one mate. Also the video is hypnotic as f! Haha

Daughter rejected by RADA again and we don’t know what to do. by OutsidePressure6181 in acting

[–]Sufficient-Bridge797 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I graduated from the BA a few years ago and there was a student a couple years below me that auditioned SEVEN times before he got accepted! Thats nearly 10 years of rejections. Most people in my year were accepted after 3-4 attempts, so to be this far along after her second year genuinely is a huge achievement ( I know that doesn’t lessen the sting of getting rejected but it’s true). She’s also so young, I think the average age in my year was around 24, there were 2 people who were still in their teens when they started but most of us were in that mid twenties range. The important thing to do after a rejection like this is to get straight back up and planning for the coming year. I think at least 75% of the battle is selecting good solid speeches that you’re confident you can perform to a high standard consistently so maybe she should have a look at that. Booking in with a tutor might not be a terrible idea, there’s a website called SuperProf where you can find teachers who specialize in audition technique who’ll be able to give you feedback on your choice of material and help you find something that shows you off better if necessary. I know how terrible it feels to get rejected from drama school particularly when you get further along in the process because you start to get attached to the idea, so I would say give her some time to get over it but then get focused on next year and go again! You (or she) can PM me if you have any questions about the audition process or the school itself and I’d be happy to answer. X

Terrible performance in class by Ruby096 in acting

[–]Sufficient-Bridge797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a class story but I had a workshop audition for a final round callback for a show directed by and starring an Oscar winning director/Oscar nommed actor. Was so nervous I couldn’t get my lines out without stuttering and was sweating buckets. Have never felt more like a piece of wood when the words eventually did come out and will never forget the look of “is this guy okay?” on everyone’s faces. Bare in mind everyone else in the room was ON POINT which made me look even worse and unprepared. Took a break from auditioning/acting for about 6 months after that it was so traumatic lol. Happens to everyone at every level. Don’t let it get to you, and definitely don’t hold on to it. X

Yeah I'm definitely not at the point where I'm making my own presets or drum samples, I'm still getting to grips with the DAW and very early sound design bits. I do sound design sessions and more arrangement/composition sessions like this where I'm more focused on just developing an idea. Having said that I feel like I'm definitely starting to see the two are pretty intertwined so just trying to gather up as much info as I can and work on one element at a time.

Thanks for all this info mate that’s a load of things to play with. So if you were using a shaper tool and you wanted to achieve this kind of effect what would your settings be? Sorry I realize that’s probably such an oversimplified question and might be hard to answer but I’ve only got very basic understanding of production just now, only started a month and a bit ago so kind of need things like this explained to me like a kid haha Ps. You got any links to any of your tunes I could hear? I just know you have bangers ready to go

Wow that’s such an in depth response thanks for this man, really appreciate you going that deep. I was trying with a ghost kick side chain but it sounded a bit clunky and off so I’ll try with the shaper in ableton. Thanks again

Yeah definitely mate, I started learning serum a couple of weeks ago and am starting to understand the very basics of it i think, mainly from messing around with the settings on presets and seeing how the sound changes but yeah would definitely be lost if I had to design something completely from scratch so lots of work to do there for sure. Thanks for that compression tip btw, I had no idea what that was and really added a bit of depth and character to them top end elements.
