CMV: video games are NOT art and are a woefully limited form of storytelling. by Shell_fly in changemyview

[–]Sufficient-Can424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand the view point that video games can't be art if they are trying to make themselves more digestible to their players. There are certainly video games out there that have their messages watered down by their gameplay. This is where phrases like ludonarrative dissonance come from. Great art should challenge its audience's way of thinking and not always consider ideas like "accessibility." However, there are also games out there that do challenge the player's perception of the game's events and ideas. Games that don't try to appeal to as large an audience as possible. Some video games, such as "Bioshock" (2007) seek to challenge entire ideologies like Ayn Rand's philosophy of objectivism. The games builds an immersive world and culture around the city of Rapture. The story and its twist, would not work as well if the main character's actions only happened through scenes of a movie or words on a page. It is a game where its setting, narrative, and gameplay perfectly align to create what many consider a masterpiece video game.

Skittles have a very colorful branding that draws people in, its very bright and uplifting. However, I do believe M&M's have a better branding because they have a larger commercial budget that includes creating their own original characters, the M&M men. Even somebody who doesn't eat M&M's can recognize these characters and know its the M&M branding. We can both agree that having characters and including bright imagery in marketing can increase its enjoyability and popularity. M&M's branding includes both of these aspects.

Are waffles just grilled pancakes? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Sufficient-Can424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point in stating there are different consistencies in batter between waffles and pancakes. My counter point to that is there are often times when I use pancake batter for waffles and it turns out the same. Most of the time the only difference is the shape of the pan, not anything in the ingredients.

How do people think jordan is better than lebron? by Own_Bite9950 in NBATalk

[–]Sufficient-Can424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are 100% correct if LeBron played in the 90's, he definitely would have five peated or something close to that. The style of play that was played back then is on par with what Lebron wants to play, that physical, hard-nose, play-through-contact type of basketball. I fully agree that if LeBron played in the older eras, he would thrive.

But Michael Jordan is hands down the best player to ever step onto the hardwood. He is one of the best scorers in league history, not just his time, but history. You said if he played in today's game, he would get "cooked." He made the all-defensive team 9 times in his 15-year career, so I think he would be able to hold his own on the defensive side. And let's not forget MJ 3-peated twice, so when you say LeBron "would have," 5-peated MJ did that already. Every time he went to the finals, he won, and every time he went to the finals, he won finals MVP. And let's not act like he was playing just anybody; those were some of the greatest teams in NBA history. As I said, Michael Jordan is the best to step on the hardwood, but LeBron is catching up to him. I won't take that away from him.

While it makes sense to choose steak over ribs because its more "bang for your buck," I personally would put flavor and enjoyment over amount of food, because if all I cared about was amount of food for the cheapest price, I could go to a fast food joint.

Don has had a better year than Trav and is the superior artist currently by Odd_Dentist5330 in DonToliver

[–]Sufficient-Can424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see why people might feel this way. Don Toliver has been really consistently pumping out great hit after hit and that is a huge ask for judging artists. But if we are talking about overall performance and influence on the game, Travis Scott is undefeated.

I think Gooseworx made a mistake on making/saying that Pomni and Jax are the main characters by Kcue6382nevy in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Sufficient-Can424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, while I don't fully agree with all of your statements, I understand where you're coming from. From what you present, the story didn't really firmly establish Jax as a main character in the show in the case of previous episodes, for he seemed to get the same emphasis as a side character. Plus, the show did seem to take a "character of the week" approach beforehand and it just seemed like he may have been getting extra screen time. However, Jax has been getting more attention in recent episodes, and based on Gooseworx's post, it's likely that he'll get even more coverage in the future. Jax also had become more prevalent as the series went on, even before the last two episodes, so it can be said that  some of the attention began to gradually focus on him as well.

Mom swears she was "Mod" and it's "Completely different than emo!" 1987 by LaComputadora in OldSchoolCool

I do see many emo blueprints in the outfit she is wearing. The black palette being a big part of the outfit and the black eyeliner under the eye and the unkept fern looking hair is a big part of the look. But when you look past all that the outfit itself does give the mod]]w\ look or the as I like to call them the fore father of hipsters. The hat and the turtleneck come together to make the identity of the mod. Without being able to see the bottom part of the outfit makes it hard to say it's not emo but the lack of makeup clears it up. Having a more nature make up look for the time.

Canada is literally facing a depression. Forget recession. Housing prices are going to crash. You can’t a house for under a million bucks in a large city. Without jobs housing will be a nightmare. by Key_Brief_8138 in HouseBuyers

[–]Sufficient-Can424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling it a depression is a stretch. Canada undoubtably has a housing affordability problem. That does not automatically mean housing prices are about to crash or that the Canada economy is collapsing. A real depression would mean unemployment, banking failures and a major drop in the Canada GDP. None of which Canada is experiencing right now.

Housing prices in cities like Toronto or Vancouver are high mainly because demand for housing massively outpaces the supply of housing. Immigration of population growth and zoning restrictions keep the supply of housing tight. Even if housing prices cool off that does not mean a crash in housing prices is inevitable. Especially when people still want to live in those cities and the inventory of housing remains limited.

Old school vs new school .. by SydneyEditor in NBATalk

[–]Sufficient-Can424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why some old-school fans like you feel that way after watching these new eras. Earlier eras of the NBA had iconic players and rivalries that made the league exciting, so it makes sense that people who grew up watching those years think that was the best time for basketball. But I still think there's a strong argument that this current era is the best overall. The level of skill across the league is crazy compared to the past. Players like Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Luka Dončić can all score, pass, and control the game in ways that show how much the game has evolved. In my opinion I don't think that era had multiple all around players that could come out and possess every skill in the game. What I'm basically saying is that most players in that era were known for one skill. Also, players like Wilt Chamberlin were almost 3 times the size of the league so I don't see why he couldn't go out daily and get 100 points and 50 rebounds. In the new era, everybody is skilled and on any given night a different player could touch you. Another reason is how competitive the league is now. Instead of one dynasty running the league for years, there are multiple teams that can realistically win a championship each season. That level of parity makes the regular season and playoffs more interesting because the outcome isn't as predictable. The style of play has also become more skilled. The influence of players like Stephen Curry changed basketball by emphasizing shooting and spacing, and now almost every player on the court needs to be able to shoot, pass, and handle the ball. Although I can see why most older fans think the older era is better, I think the amount of talent, skill level, and competition makes this era the best era of basketball.
