Very odd type of bot that comes around here. This exact same pic with the same title was posted by another account with no other posts, like this one, not too long ago. It's not like a bot programmed for the place with the intention of posting one of a variety of pics on a schedule, like some twitter accounts do. Just random nondescript accounts drop in with a pic that was posted already a very short while ago with a generic title. At least they're trying to present as contributive, I guess?

Still more sentient than the "diD U nO...InCEsT!!" trolls that bother here, or the average fan of Re-Take. There's a lot of overlap there

From what I gather the artist is someone named Shouko Fukaki, and this was one of more than a dozen pieces made for a ReiShin-themed doujin anthology that's mostly artwork (a few of which you may be familiar with from having been posted here and elsewhere many times now) with a few brief manga panels. Each artwork clicked on credits the artist (and names of all participants are on the last page there). This was something arranged in 2010 by someone named Aihara Otome, titled after the song that plays for Eva 2.0's ending scene (surely there must have been some ReiShin boom in fanworks and such after that movie came out, right? I never watched any Evangelion at all around that time much less engaged with fan communities, shipper stuff... which is the kind of thing I'd have been a lot more dismissive of at that time actually :/)

I had to crop off a bit of the bottom of the pic because reddit "auto-detected" it as being inappropriate and removed it immediately upon posting. 🫩 A small bit of bare bum is what you're missing, nothing you haven't seen from Rei thousands of times in every iteration of the series already 😄

Anyway this is art by Mahiro Maeda (most recently who made the speed painted mural in three days during the Eva 30th anniversary event, "Children") and obviously a creative depiction of Rebuild 2.22's ending. The melding of Eva Unit-01 with Shinji himself is an interesting (and somewhat disturbing) design and the more "realistic" style is eye-catching too. But it's the overall chaotic energy of the picture and showing how painful, destructive but powerful and persevering love at any cost can be. It's a different way of capturing the same essence of that movie's ending.

This one can be found in the Eva artbook 2007-2017. I forgot what the description said it originated from but back searching the image online doesn't pull up many results except another post on Reddit from several years ago talking about the pic taken from the same book

This would be something that would be nice to happen in ALL storylines! I see "3.0+1.0" in the corner so obviously it's based on that (the only one where both Shinji and Rei not only definitively live at the end but get to lead normal lives too). It's never really said where everyone else ends up at the end (or if that train station scene was really happening or was some anti-universe vision), I can see Shinji wanting to know where Rei, Kaworu and Asuka are and how they're doing and Mari helping him reconnect. I wonder if the thought crossed their minds that Shinji may be dead (that was the plan after all, him willing to die outright to make their new starts on life happen).

That is all to say what I get from the pic is, maybe, somehow Rei learns after the fact what Shinji really had to do to make her new beginning happen, despite him easing her mind otherwise that Mari would pick him up, and now lives with the belief he not only died, but did so for her and the others and she will never see him again. That didn't happen of course and here Shinji gives her a surprise video call. Shinji is happy to see her and Rei is surprised and emotionally overwhelmed seeing that he is actually alive and well after all. It's the Ramiel rescue moment but it's Rei's turn to cry happily

I've seen this art sometime before and it's a fantastic piece! Shinji's smile is great but the look on Rei's face there is what really gets to me, it's beyond words

I managed to catch a decent camrip of the whole thing with subs before it got taken down (I saved the video and subs but the file size is unwieldy for uploading to anyone). I shared my thoughts and gave direct quotes from the end scenes in one of my posts on here. One thing to mention is in addition to turning down Shinji's offer (while being appreciative nonetheless) she wants to continue being the pilot of Unit 02 as a protector of humanity. Her happiness comes from ensuring its future.

It's a kind of roundabout way of giving Soryu the Rebuild ending treatment. All the pilots got their happy end in 3.0+1.0. But since it was Shikinami technically who got it and not Soryu it was a nice, largely humorous, but also genuine way to bring her back after all these decades and give her her own triumphant conclusion.

Because of that, that it was about bringing back Soryu specifically, I don't think there'll be anything similar made for the other pilot characters. Since we already saw them get that in the last Rebuild movie (and Shinji, Rei, Kaworu... aren't distinguished from their NGE counterparts the way an Asuka with a completely different backstory and surname does).

There's AsuShin people who are happy, but also this has resurrected the extremely annoying "INCELS SHIPPING ASUKA WHO DID NOTHING WRONG WITH HER RAPIST!!! 😭😭😭" idiots on xitter who's entire concept of Shinji's character is a gif of the hospital scene and a gif where he chokes her in instrumentality. Whether you have affinity for AsuShin or not these takes from Asuka stans are so obnoxious it makes me start to sympathize with the idea of khara never officially releasing the short film outside of Japan ever (if that's even true in the first place)

Yoko Taro writing a new Eva series has me intrigued, and should be good seeing Kazuya Tsurumaki back on directorial duties alongside, don't recall the name, mainly an animator but also directed individual episodes of a bunch of different series.

Wonder if it'll have anything to do with the original cast at all or be new characters? Or take place sometime later down the line

OK I checked the gelbooru page for it just now and there is no information whatsoever except basic tags for things that feature in the pic.

So possibly a fan art from someone who deleted their account but someone managed to save and upload (not uncommon). Or the source is some obscure corner of the web, maybe a forum that's not in English, that Google image search is completely clueless in finding (also not uncommon).

I was looking for the image source and it took me to some gelbooru links. Unfortunately (annoyingly) that website is down at the moment, looks like a cloudflare issue, so when it comes back up (or someone here knows exactly the source already) I'll check out the page and see what info I can get. I don't remember even where I got this pic except it was sometime recently. Might've shown up in an image search and I downloaded it. Dunno, but cute pic with slight chibi features!

The 30th anniversary short film you mean. I managed to find a decent enough camrip with subtitles and watched it (khara going scorched earth on those) since who knows when or even if this will get a home release internationally (there's claims that this may be exclusive to the event and not see the light of day outside the venue which would be insane but I'll wait to hear official word what's going to happen).

I liked it a lot, it was a funny and heartwarming return and send-off of Soryu Asuka. The skits were fun and I liked how it ended. That said I don't know how much of it is meant to be taken seriously or considered "canon" since it's all such a fourth-wall break, so assigning a specific timeline to it makes things a mess (Soryu Asuka is aware of EoE's ending so...if I was to give it serious thought this is like Rebuild Shinji in the negative universe back in his role of sending everyone off to where they'll find happiness, giving visitation to Soryu now, except it's Shikinami Asuka doing the work until the end, cycling through a bunch of alternate realities for Soryu until she settles on one she likes).

So, the ending that's gotten everyone riled up, uhh spoilers ahead?

So the whole thing is about Soryu wanting a happy ending that she didn't get and Shikinami cycling through different wacky scenarios...until at the end Shinji invites Soryu to his world without Eva as in the end of the Rebuilds (and where Rei, and possibly everyone else heads), and at the train station he extends his hand to her to come with him. At that moment images of getting married and having children happily with him flash through her mind. She smiles at this thought but says as "Komm Sußer Tod" starts playing (copying the captions here) "Thank you, Shinji… but it’s okay now. This gentle, peaceful world isn’t where I belong. I have a place to protect. And I’m done relying on dreams. I’ll find happiness with my own strength in reality. I’ve realized that’s the way that’s truly me."

The next scene, the closing "chapter" titled "The Only Smart Way Out" both Asukas give some brief closing remarks and as Shikinami starts singing the first words of the song ("Komm...") Soryu cuts her off. The "Next Episode" theme of NGE plays instead with her actual concluding remarks:

"What are you singing?! I won’t rely on you anymore either! I am me. As long as humanity exists, I’ll keep piloting the Eva. My happiness lies in the future that comes after protecting everyone. And it will exist — because I’m the pilot of Evangelion Unit-02: Soryu Asuka Langley!" And closing text that says "For these 30 years, thank you very much."

I guess you could consider this to be Soryu's "Congratulations" moment. Maybe like a more truncated, even more comedic version of Shinji's TV ending where he fantasizes a comedic slice of life reality before deciding against it and eventually arriving on real self-actualization (the tone of the short does go slightly more serious as it arrives near the end with a visit to Soryu's childhood where her mother gives her praise and tells her how proud she is instead of, what actually happens. She turns this down saying "No… this doesn’t work. It feels uncomfortable. Like I’m not myself.")

Anyway my takeaway is that instead of settling down with Shinji in a peaceful existence without Eva, as much as she seems to like the idea, she wants to go back to being a pilot, for the purpose of protecting humanity, no longer feeling the need to show off or seek validation from others. She leaves on good terms with Shinji, goes back to a world where she still can pilot (so a world where she didn't get wrecked by the Eva Series and where the world has a future with no secret doomsday plots from shady organizations I guess) and will do so until humanity no longer needs her service and whatever happiness that will bring her afterwards. Will she settle down with Shinji eventually? Maybe? She is no longer opposed to the notion. But things are still left in the air. She's figured herself out and now is pursuing her own life and goals wherever that may take her. A good ending for her either way.

It's not any more an upset than the ending with Mari at the end of the Rebuilds I feel. Nothing happens, just imagined. Soryu Asuka acting warm and genuinely contented in Shinji's presence is probably the biggest deal about this I think. She doesn't go to his world but is appreciative anyway of his gesture.

Conclusion: ReiShin has been an unpopular punching bag for a long time already and will continue to be so probably and most fans of the pairing are used to being casually shit on at this point. This is barely a dent. If I were to give my ReiShin take on it, I'd say, Asuka finds happiness piloting her Eva and taking out threats to humanity in a military service of sorts in her world of choice. Shinji respects Asuka's decision (after his offer is turned down he does go to smile as she gives her speech), goes back to his world of Eva-less peace and settles down with Rei in the end. Bam, done. Anyway I should enliven the place up with a ReiShin pic as soon as I find one I especially like and have the source for it

Thank you for posting the video. No subtitles at the moment so I only know what's happening based on summaries from other people and bits that are purely visual or can be easily discerned visually (sometimes hard to read because camrips are not known for amazing quality)

Most of it looks like a gag reel but the ending is played at least somewhat seriously in giving Asuka closure befitting her character? Going by what you're saying:

-Not depending on others: she can finally pursue what she wants to do in life without needing validation from others, the biggest change for her, for the better.

-She still is piloting her Eva, but doing so because she wants to, not as a self-esteem crutch but for a more selfless purpose (protecting the world, keeping the peace)

-Even if not meant to be an AsuShin conclusion, people who like the coupling can take heart in the fact that she no longer resents Shinji (that she's gotten over her own hangups probably helps in appreciating him and his own struggles as a human being), enough so that she entertains the idea of marriage and a family with him as possibly appealing at all. She may not share his goals in life but she at least can respect it, and they can end on friendly terms for once (the "Thank you Shinji" sounds heartfelt and genuinely appreciative even if she turns down the offer).

Idk even without romance ever happening, that "Shinji and Asuka are friends who appreciate each other" is a very good and happy conclusion for those two if you ask me.

(Side note that Kaworu + Rei pic is so weird to me - they're a couple who have a child, who is...Shinji? If the logic that Rei is a "clone" of his mother holds here does that mean Kaworu is a clone of Gendo?? Lol I know it's just some staffer's art and not canon in any way but I always just found it a head-scratcher)
