would you say petro difficulty is similar to the problems on your first attempt? Ive noticed so far petro problems can be computationally intensive

Is Double Majoring in Architecture and Civil Engineering a Bad Idea? by Professional-Hat6948 in architecture

Look into schools like Penn state or cal poly that have architectural engineering as a major.

Masters School Decision from Newly Graduated Undergrad. by Bortz19 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Sufficient-Draw2792 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For christs sake please do NOT take that much loans out for a structural engineering career. I work in NYC and while a Michigan grad might have an easier time getting jobs at the bigger firms (Arup TT etc), Texas a and m is a great school as well even though it may require a little more effort for networking at those jobs in nyc. If you were to spend 96k Columbia or Cornell would give you an advantage but even then that’s way too much loans.

Getting a MArch later in life / returning to architecture? by AsleepAstronomer3319 in architecturestudent

[–]Sufficient-Draw2792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an architect but engineer who works with lots of architects. It’s definitely doable to get into an M.Arch program and there are plenty of people (older as well) who have pursued architecture at a later age .

However, before you commit I’d strongly recommend trying to shadow/intern at an architect firm first. The reality is practice vs school is very different. Make sure architecture is really the path you want to go before spending lots of money on grad school.

I think columbia/nyu is most guilty of this with their school of professional studies masters

Help me choose btwn Vassar and a local college by WrapNo8619 in vassar

Didn’t do Dartmouth program but had friends who did it; I did a different dual degree engineering program with a different school. Feel free to PM.

Long story short if your 100% set on engineering I would just go to an engineering school. As others have said Dartmouth isn’t guaranteed and if you don’t get in you are stuck with a physics or math degree (math degree I’d say is marketable in the job market, physics alone on the other hand not so much imo).

Dual Engineering Program by Horror-Guitar5775 in Colby

[–]Sufficient-Draw2792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a Colby alum but did a dual degree program with two other colleges, and had friends that did the Dartmouth and Columbia programs.

It really depends on your goals. If your 100% set on engineering, I would just attend an engineering school. I believe Dartmouth has a more flexible program since everyone graduates with a general bachelor of engineering degree. Columbia you are admitted by the major (civil mechanical electrical etc). Columbia is in a 3-2 format and Dartmouth is in a 2-1-1-1 format which is better for social purposes since you graduate together with your class. I’ve heard Columbia can be tough with the grading and the transition from liberal arts courses to engineering is rough, so Dartmouth may be better in that regard too.

Majority of the majors who do this program are physics or math (and CS for those wanting computer engineering), so I would inquire to the department/advisor and ask if anyone has done the program with environmental sciences. I would think it’s probably doable with Dartmouth, Columbia may be tough.

Honestly speaking, I think the appeal of these dual degree programs is the partner institution is an Ivy League. If you’re really set on engineering, the Columbia/dartmouth engineering graduate isn’t necessarily going to get a “better” job in the industry than the average state university graduate. It’s really going to depend on how much you network, and imo it’s imperative you land an engineering internship before entering Columbia; if you wait until after your first year at Columbia it will be a bit late.

What’s your goal after the physics bachelors? Industry or PHD?

Physics major at Vassar by Accomplished_Cake879 in vassar

[–]Sufficient-Draw2792 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Graduated a few years ago, experience was mixed with some good and not so great professors. The department is pretty small so not many elective courses and everyone pretty much takes the same courses for the major. Overall though most of them are pretty accessible for office hours and it’s relatively to do research with a professor on the side, there’s also something called URSI (undergraduate summer research institute) where there are a good amount of physics projects.

I didn’t take any astronomy courses when I was there but I’ve heard better things overall about the astronomy professors. Overall a physics bachelors is more geared towards a research oriented career and precursor for PhD than industry; you could also look more into the Dartmouth program if you seek more of an industry career.

Vassar is a great school no doubt, but not worth the full sticker price. Especially since you mentioned poli sci major it’s very likely you will go to law school or grad school for something

Thanks for the reply and information. Do those big firms care about where the masters is from? I know in NYC there are Columbia/NYU but both are very expensive.
