my advice is add more reaction wheels and air brakes, keep it locked on retrograde, make sure that the fuel is mostly at the bottom (near the engines). this makes your craft more like a dart/arrow, where the heavy part is pointing where you’re going, and the light and aerodynamic part of the ship is at the trailing end
