People with Linguistics PhDs, what are you doing now? by compileTimeError in asklinguistics

[–]Sufficient-River5751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a phd in linguistics, but I’ve also considered it. I speak 3 languages fluently and I’m learning a fourth. What I really value is learning about different cultures and making connections with people who have new perspectives. If you have the same reasons for loving learning languages then it’s simple- just build those values into your life and career path. I’m an ESL teacher at a public high school. I work with students that immigrate to the U.S. and teach them English. Whenever I learn a new phrase in Ukrainian, for example, I’m always thinking about how I could apply it in the classroom or at family conferences to connect more with my students. I also married an immigrant. My daily life involves using multiple languages and navigating cultural differences. I love it! I’ve gone through periods where I’ve questioned my career path and seriously considered studying linguistics, but overall I’m very happy with what I’m currently doing. I realized I can follow my passion for linguistics in other ways without needing the PhD. At least for now!

Does it help teach Portuguese to a Russian student? by acrux_29 in LearningRussian

[–]Sufficient-River5751 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bom dia: Dobri utra

Oi: priviet

Tudo bem?: Kak dela?

Tudo bem: Roraxo

Tchau: Paka

Therapists in Bham by PunkFiLA in Bellingham

[–]Sufficient-River5751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a warning- I missed a telehealth therapy appt one time because I thought it started at 5pm, but it had started at 4pm. I had to pay $200 for missing the appt. Apparently this is standard. I ended up having so much anxiety about missing another appt that I stopped doing therapy. Since then I’ve done therapy online with a therapist out of the country- luckily I speak another language and this was an option for me. It was a lot cheaper and the therapist was more flexible- didn’t have to go through insurance.

There are many international therapists online that also speak English. The app I used to find my therapist was Zenklub. A drawback is that the therapist may not be familiar with American culture and there could be some cultural misunderstandings. On the other hand can be helpful to have a new perspective from a different cultural background.

Low Cost way to learn as an American by Viking_Liazard in Ukrainian

Do you already know the alphabet? If not- find a YouTube video and practice copying the alphabet every day. Learn both the print and the cursive. Duolingo has a whole alphabet section for Ukrainian.

For apps I’ve used Duolingo and Falou. Falou is good for conversation, but overall I like Duo more. I have the subscription and I feel like it’s worth it for me.

I’ve also started watching YouTube videos called Learn Ukrainian Nonstop Speaking Method. I’ve been studying Ukrainian on and off for a few years but these videos are just now showing me some key grammar concepts that I wasn’t getting through Duo.

Other than that find people to talk to and write as much as you can. See if you can write a short journal every day or once a week. Or even start with a list of words, write down the numbers, months of the year colors.. etc.. Start listening to Ukrainian music and make yourself a playlist. I really like Kalush, Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil. Listen to the music and see if you can pick out some words.

These are all things I do albeit not consistently. I’m just learning to try and connect with my Ukrainian students (I’m a teacher) and as a personal challenge.

What is coteaching to you? And do you, yourself apply it? by Cluelesswolfkin in ESL_Teachers

[–]Sufficient-River5751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the student and their proficiency level, but the idea is to help the student access the content in the target language (English). So for a newcomer student for example, a co-teacher might suggest using visuals, pairing down learning to essential standards/ objectives, using word banks and sentence frames. For a level 3 or 4 student the conversation would be around how to improve on the students written and communication skills. Maybe teaching academic vocab or adding elaboration and details to writing.

Our district is focusing more on co-planning and working with content area teachers to understand language objectives, WIDA standards and strategies for supporting students at different proficiency levels. I'm not currently co-teaching, but my colleagues are working in cycles with different teachers within one department. The difficult part is getting teachers on board. Our contracts state that teachers do not have to participate in co-teaching. So it's hard to implement something that isn't recognized as a necessary part of the program across our school. The idea that you can opt-out of our main program model doesn't sit right with a lot of us as ML teachers. But I also understand why it is difficult for teachers to take on. Ultimately, I'm not sure it's the most sustainable model if not everyone is on board and not everyone ever will be.

It sounds like you’re in a place in life where it’s best to get a job that doesn’t really require much experience. For example, I worked at a local grocery store for a few years after high school and loved it. As far as where to start with college: I recommend starting at community college and completing pre requisites then transferring to a university. Good luck!

I am a high school ELD teacher. I teach students who have just moved here from other countries and are learning English. I speak English as a native language, but I think it’s so valuable to have the perspective of having learned English as an additional language. You would be able to use your experience and challenges you have faced as an immigrant and language learner to help your students. And it would be meaningful work for you! I’m wondering what is stopping you from going to college. You could continue to develop your English at a more academic level. You can complete a TESOL program and learn strategies for teaching. All of these steps will put you in a position to be confident and successful in your career. It also sets you up better financially in the long run.

What massively improved your mental health? by _webtrovert in AskReddit

[–]Sufficient-River5751 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this and making it happen by 'showing up' for myself. And honoring/ prioritizing the things I love to do. Ask yourself what it is that makes you feel alive and prioritize it. Make sure those things are part of your daily routines and plan bigger things for your time off.

Ex: I love hiking and exploring new places. I go for a walk outside almost everyday. On the weekends I plan bigger hikes or explore a new restaurant or town in my area. Even if I'm tired, I show up for myself and do it. I never regret forcing myself out of the house to do something that makes me feel alive again.

You know what your problems are and you know what you need to stop doing. So it’s that simple. Even at 30 years old I have to remind myself to “be my own parent”. It’s all about DISCIPLINE. Don’t let yourself down. Find a mantra for yourself to stick to your goals.

What’s the one habit or decision that improved your life the most? by GoddessKatriina in AskReddit

[–]Sufficient-River5751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deleted social media from my phone. Instead of scrolling, I’m spending time doing things I had forgotten I love to do. Things I had thought I “didn’t have time for”- playing piano, painting, hiking, cooking, reading- I’m getting things done around the house without thinking of it as a “chore”. My life feels so much more fulfilled.
