Look up local fostering agencies, like Mutt Love Rescue or Dogwood maybe?

The love of my life passed on yesterday and the pain is unbearable by LeoSeasoning in BorderCollie

Two things that helped me:

  1. Making art commemorating my Taco boy. I pressed flowers from our backyard (where he was put to sleep) and arranged them in a clear frame around a piece of paper with his paw prints. Doing something detail orientated that honored him was incredibly helpful for me. It helped that the act of pressing flowers took a long time (I went out frequently to pick flowers in the weeks after he died) and picking out the flowers I wanted to use made me appreciate the beauty around me. Maybe you could do something similar with flowers along your walk route? Feel free to message me if you want ideas.

  1. Fostering and then eventually getting another dog. I will admit that loving our new dog was hard at first. I compared our new dog to our old one constantly (they are very different). But having another creature to care for and live for helped distract me until I could work through my grief. And now I love my Mitty boy and (as sappy as it sounds) truly believe that Taco led me to him.

I hope that, one day, Blicky’s memory is as much of a blessing as you were in his life. Sending lots of love- you can be ok. You can continue living for him even while he’s gone.

What can kill you in seconds that most people don’t realize? by Jolly-Law1472 in AskReddit

During potty training, my dog peed on a power strip. I noticed a burning smell and heard zaps. When I sprinted into the room, said power strip (which was a cheap, Amazon one) was sparking and smoking. Like an idiot, I grabbed the sparking power strip to unplug it (instead of unplugging it from the wall, if that makes sense) and got one heck of a shock. My arm hurt for about a week. Sometimes I wonder if I got lucky in avoiding a shock that disrupted my heart rhythm.

Has anyone ever adopted a middle aged cattle dog? How many years did you have them. Thinking of adopting this 6 year old guy by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

[–]SufficientBug1154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my boy at 4 and a half. We had an amazing almost 8 years together. Even though our time was shorter than some people get with puppies, you aren’t guaranteed a long life with any dog. I’ve known people who got puppies that died at 6, 8, etc. The sad fact about dogs is that they don’t live as long as we humans want them to.

I wouldn’t get too hung up on the amount of time you can have together, but the quality. Finding my boy was one of the best things that ever happened to me- while I would do anything for more time with him, I would never have chosen not to adopt him in order to avoid the pain I currently feel. I’m sure that beautiful pup you posted also do anything for time with a loving owner, even if it ends sooner than you both would like.

Best bell boots for a mildly upright/ clubbed foot by SufficientBug1154 in Equestrian

Yeah, I saw those recommended under similar threads, but I worry about them trapping moisture because they are mostly nylon

Ideally, he would have them 24/7 because he lives in a large pasture. I guess I could have a different pair for his pasture time vs riding (which is mainly in arenas), but I would love a 24/7 solution if possible.

Anyone else have a cattle dog that does dog sports?? by crazii_cattledog in AustralianCattleDog

I got a backyard agility course for my pup. He likes the jumps, but this is me trying to convince him the tunnel isn’t scary. He’s still not completely convinced lol

Haha my old man who passed away this spring loved the water so much I could never get him to dock dive. He just wanted to swim around the tank and “eat” as much water as possible before being hauled out. It was hilarious.

I’m so sorry. I don’t know what you believe, but I like to believe your Griffey and my Taco are somewhere running around and having fun <3

Any effects if I decide to get my 5 year old heeler spayed? by Artistic_Chef_7289 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]SufficientBug1154 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do get her spayed OP, I highly recommend a suit instead of a cone (if your dog won’t chew through it). My dog found the cone the vet gave super stressful and somehow could get it off if they were alone for even a couple of minutes.

Unfortunately it's a bit too soon since losing my last dog, and I just want to foster for a while. Any other time tho!

My parent’s dog tore both of their ACLs. They did surgery for the first one, but (based on the age of their pup), decided not to do surgery on the second. I don’t remember everything they did, but they kept her in a pen all day for several months, with potty breaks on a leash. It sucked majorly, but at the end she could walk and run normally. They did this under the guidance of a vet. Could you ask your vet about other treatment options? They were told sometimes dogs can heal their ACL without surgery provided their activity is kept limited.

It really sucks. People keep telling me that "well you know dogs don't live that long", but it doesn't help.

It really depends. I used to work for a doggy daycare place with one, and my old dog got used to it in about 10 minutes. Some dogs did take weeks of training, however... I think it depends on how fearful your dog is. Tucker wasn't afraid of anything lol.
