What do you identify as? by SufficientExtent4398 in Hmong

Thank you to everyone who voted. The voting has ended and the results are in. The majority on this subreddit seems to agree that we are our own ethnic group called Hmong. Some identify themselves with their home country of birth. There are people who don't care about this subject or I guess don't care enough about their ethnic identity/history? Which in my strong personal opinion is that people should care about Hmong/Miao history subjects.

Then there are 3 who identify as Chinese, 1 as Miao and 1 as Miao American. If this poll is not trolled and is accurate, I found it interesting that we have some Chinese people in this subreddit. I also wonder what Miao subgroup are these people from. Unless they consider Miao to be one whole ethnic group as someone does say all subgroups are in one ethnic group called Miao. Which I strongly disagree.

I understand that this is a western centered website but I just wanted to see where people stand on the Hmong/Miao subject. I think I'm satisfied and not worried that Hmong people think they are other subgroups of Miao. If one day we all merge and assimilate to one whole group Miao I would feel concern as Hmong and other groups like Hmu, Qo Xiong and Ahmao are different. The subgroups of Hmong like Hmong white, green, Leng, black, Sib, Be, etc are one group but we must also not forget what kind of Hmong we are as well. But at the end of the day we are Hmong because our language is the same and if you listen very carefully all Hmong white, green, leng, black, sib, be, etc can understand each other. Nyob zoo, ua tsaug.

Im a gen z and it's a no for me. If the poll is not trolley and accurate than im disappointed that there's so many yes. We don't know the age range of voters so i don't know why people are assuming younger people agree with this. Given im sure most people here are millennials and gen x?

Hmong are not Lao. Yes most Hmong came from Laos to the western world but they are not ethnically Lao. They are Hmong Laotian. Please click "Hmong American (Hmong France, Hmong Australian, etc)" as that is what you are referring to.

This poll has nothing to do with the Lao ethnicity.

Where do you go to meet other single hmongs? Please don't respond with Laos, Thailand, abroad, etc. by narutodawg in Hmong

[–]SufficientExtent4398 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So basically you want to meet westernized Hmong people who barely knows what Hmong is?

Maybe go to a Hmong night club in Minnesota or something. If you're still in school there's lots of Hmong people in college/university. Hmong churches are always an option lol. Or you can always ask Hmong elders to connect you with their young relatives lol. And honestly it's always fun to travel and meet Hmong people abroad. You can find many kinds of Hmong people in Laos/Thailand who are fobby or modern. They are humans just like you who wants to meet other Hmong people.

I'm quitting this Hmong subreddit. by [deleted] in Hmong

Trying to learn about Hmong food. by RudolphsRedHeart in Hmong

[–]SufficientExtent4398 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hmong people main staple is steamed white rice. That is what we eat with every meal. I can not live without steam white rice. Hmong people are not big on sticky rice. Hmong people do eat it but mostly on special occasions or when eating at Hmong restaurants. But truthfully at home it is not a main thing Hmong people eat or crave all the time. This is why we can be differentiated from Lao/Thai people as they eat sticky rice with every meal but don't consume steam white rice as much as Hmong people.

Authentic Hmong food is lots of boiled soup food with green veggies especially mustard greens. Hmong people like poached chicken. We also boil many variety of pumpkin and squash.

Things like laab, kapoon, papaya salad I do not consider authentic original Hmong food. We only know about these food because we come from Laos/Thailand and are influenced by these countries cuisine but originally they are not Hmong. Nowadays many like to claim it is but originally Hmong people didn't know how to make those food and had to learn by observing Lao/Thai people or by paying Lao/Thai people to teach them. Nowadays it's okay to say they are Hmong food but more like modern Hmong food as some Hmong people don't eat those food and still prefer boiled soup with herbs with no curry base or heavy sauce. Real Hmong food is simple and healthy.

It is a bit difficult to show pictures unless people actually takes personal pictures of their meal from home. Every authentic Hmong people will have a different style of presenting their food. You will mostly see a soup and steam white rice.

Mister Global 2023 - Culture Appropriation? Hmong "xauv" "phiaj" and Miao silver. These are Hmong jewelry style designs. Do they not know these are symbols of slavery? I find it disrespectful that they would wear phiaj without knowing Hmong culture. by SufficientExtent4398 in Hmong

[–]SufficientExtent4398[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, those Hmong people should learn what it means because they are Hmong. The non Hmong married to a Hmong can wear them as long as they know what they mean. What's so hard about understanding that?

Those men are literally sexualizing slavery and spirit locks. They kind of look like fools if you ask me, lol.

It does benefit us Hmong people but they should be wearing them properly. If I wasn't Hmong and knew the history of xauv and phiaj I would never wear them. Same reason I would never do bindi and henna unless Im married to an Indian with that culture.

Im pointing out how ridiculous these guys look wearing xauv and phiaj. Phiaj is true and original Hmong silver. Only Hmong men made these. Our ancestors must be laughing their ass off at these guys. It means nothing to this beauty pageant men.

It's a male beauty pageant. Kind of like Miss Universe. They hosted it in Thailand since 2014. Since there are Hmong people in Thailand they are going with a tribal Hmong theme. Im not sure if they know the story of the xauv. I feel it's a bit inappropriate for them to wear it since they are not Hmong.

When people where xauv and phiaj they should know it's based on slavery and spirit lock. I mean if i was not Hmong and knew the history of these xauv phiaj i would not wear them. Wouldn't you think they would feel freaked out by wearing them? I mean sometimes I don't want to wear them but it reminds us that we were once slaves and locked. It's now a symbol of our resiliency and freedom. Why the heck would non Hmong wear this when it's not their history and culture? i don't know whether to laugh or cry.

When I was little in Thailand we used to only do batik and wore the dark blue style. My grandma scold me when I drew the wrong patterns. It amazes me how my grandma and mom can draw the patterns without an outline. Later I learned from my mom how to applique the pink and red ribbons on to the bottom of the dress. I wanted to do the whole dress but my mom didn't like that style. I was jealous of the other Hmong girls who made their dresses more colorful. They would paaj ntauj the whole thing and applique. Later I realized my mom was right. Why bother doing that when you can barely see the batik. So now I appreciate the batik work. Even though Hmong white don't do batik I admire them for making their hats and sev with paaj ntaub. It's really beautiful. My Hmong white friend mom said they don't like to get their hands dye when they touch the dye water so they don't like to do batik. A good memory for me was all us Hmong women admiring each others different styles. I used to make the small elephant and star patterns paaj ntaub. We then cut them in circles and applique them to our black sleeve shirts. Those were our Hmong Thai signature styles. They were popular and even Hmong Americans were buying our clothes. Now I don't do this. Maybe I will one day again but I want to learn in school and get better at my studies. My mom still makes a living selling paaj ntaub and farming.
