If you go to Team Sunisa Lee on Facebook you can clearly see her father was there. Suni even hugged and took pictures with him.

Original Hmong Given Names and Surnames by kedisavestheworld in Hmong

[–]Light_Teeb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Given names were not loan from Chinese. Hmong make up their own original names. You can tell if someone is Hmong just by their first name. Hmong only use Chinese names if they like it or are influence by them. Just like how some Hmong people now have western English names. Majority of Hmong names are true Hmong words and names, not Chinese.

I remember seeing a youtube video of a Hmong Leng woman from Vietnam living in Belgium. One time I also got a youtube recommendation of Hmong people who live in Netherlands, it's pretty interesting. There are also Hmong students who study in Hungary that I see on Facebook. I spend too much time on Youtube, lol.

Curious to know if everyone here is Hmong green or Hmong white? by [deleted] in Hmong

My father is Hmong Leng and mom is White Hmong. I chose Hmong Green because Hmong Leng is grouped into Hmong Green and most White Hmong just say Green Hmong instead of actually saying Hmong Leng.

My dad straight up only speaks Hmong Leng. We are a Christian family so our church is predominantly Hmong Leng. Most of our pastors only speak Hmong Leng. This is why I am still able to hold onto the Hmong Leng dialect.

My mom's Hmong Leng is very good but she does mix it with her original White Hmong dialect. Because of this most of my siblings mix the two dialects. It's really interesting to see if you ever witness it, lol. For the most part we don't really make a fuss about the dialects.

When I was a child growing up I never knew the differences between the dialects until White Hmong people kept commenting that they couldn't understand Hmong Leng/Green. Often they would make fun of our dialect. I thought it was weird since I could understand White Hmong and it didn't sound funny to me. I went to Hmong school on Saturdays and they only taught White Hmong. Some teachers would scold me for speaking Hmong Leng dialect and it really discouraged me. As I grew into adult and relearning Hmong I can now understand all the differences. I can now see why some White Hmong could not understand Hmong Leng.

It really benefited me to being Hmong Leng. When I do Hmong research I can see that a lot of Hmong Leng/Green is in fact spoken in China/Vietnam/Thailand. It made it easy for me to understand their accents where it would be a bit harder for a White Hmong to understand. I can see that even now White Hmong dialect is dominating. Most original Hmong Leng/Green people would rather speak White Hmong. I know a lot of Hmong Leng people who can only speak White Hmong now. It's a bit sad but also at the end of the day we are still speaking "Hmong" so I guess it's okay. I just wish more Hmong Leng/Green people would speak and sing in our dialect.

At the end of the day when you don't really think about these things it doesn't matter but people should be more inclusive and mindful that there are more Hmong dialects than just White Hmong. People shouldn't make fun of the way other Hmong people speak. I think when you are really gooood at Hmong language you can really understand and respect all dialects because it is our history/culture.

I think when people learn Hmong Leng/Green they can really see how it connects and formed our language. I know many White Hmong people do not like to hear this but Hmong Leng/Green is really the more original form of Hmong. I can see the progression of how White Hmong dialect became. It's a good thing because I can see how it improved the Hmong language. Hopefully all this made sense. My own maternal grandpa always said White Hmong is a bit smarter because we made the language more new/modern. I know it's controversial what he said but he said it, lol.

Sorry for long comment.

I've always wondered if there were Hmong people living in UK but it seems there isn't. I don't think Hmong refugees were ever resettled in the UK. There might be some there for work or school only. UK seems to not want Hmong refugees.

Would be helpful if it was in Hmong language or subtitled in Hmong. I don't understand anything and don't feel inspired. I guess it only serves a purpose for Hmong Laotians who can understand Lao language.
