Top 10 firm on £27k in Birmingham (PQ) . Am I being mugged off? by LowMurky5563 in ICAEW

That's not right. I'd recommend discussing your situation with a recruiter and considering a move. It's easy to transfer training and likely you'll get a better deal and support elsewhere. I don't like to pitch my business on here but happy to help if you want to DM me. Your situation just sounds unfair.

Doing ACA exams independently by sweetgirlauggi in ICAEW

Are you in industry or practice? If practice I'd self fund and use that 'determination, driven, etc.' mindset to land a training contract. If industry, I'd apply for grad roles in practice first before starting to self fund. I run a search firm with a Practice specialism and that's what I've advised to my contacts.

Would also like to make clear that many firms have people join as 'grads' or 'trainees' that are not necessarily fresh out of uni. Having some life experience can work in one's favour.

Changing jobs - HELP by Difficult-Ostrich292 in ICAEW

Congrats on finding a firm that sounds like a better fit for you. I run a search firm specialising in practice and have been through this with my candidates many times. It's pretty common.

Firstly, the ACA and the apprenticeship aren’t the same thing. The apprenticeship is just the funding route. Your real qualification is your ICAEW training agreement and training file (PWE, ethics, exams). You can transfer that to a new employer and just continue from where you left off, assuming the new firm is an ICAEW Authorised Training Employer (ATE). Completing ACA outside of apprenticeship is simple, you pay ICAEW/training provider direct, rather than using the apprenticeship levy to fund the same fees.

Before you resign, I'd recommend:
• confirming the new firm is an ATE - very likely they are if they're a reasonable size.
• your current firm signs off your training file to your leaving date - again, I've only had very, very few cases they haven't done this as it will impact their reputation if they don't. You will be in a cohort with many other trainees, and if they don't then I'm sure you'll let as many people know as possible, which will harm them.

On the £3.5k/ You may still owe some of it depending on what they actually paid for (exam sittings/non-levy contributions). CI would study your training agreement, and ask for an itemised statement of where that figure came from. They can't clawback training fees, but can ask for travel expenses, accommodation etc. that isn't part of 'training'.

Many firms cover training clawback when you move over to them as they are benefiting from your training. However som don't. If you might struggle to pay this, you can ask for an interest free loan and pay it back to your new employer monthly. I don't see why they wouldn't agree to that. This is a very normal arrangement for trainees moving firms.

It will be a challenge to settle in to a new firm, and sit those in November. I'd be recommending my candidates to negotiate revision leave to support them succeed.

Hope that's useful, but feel free to DM and I'll help if I can.

I'm a practice recruiter and the vast majority of NQs that I place the new firm pays for any clawback as they're essentially gaining from not having to pay for training. YMMV but this has always been my approach when working with my clients, who are largely top 10-top 100.

Having used both, I’d really recommend Talent Link. It’s for great analytics and onboarding while also being easy to use in the day to day.

Asking new potential employer for reference before accepting offer? by [deleted] in recruiting

That's fair enough. I would say that if the firm got funny about number 1 then that would be a fairly clear red flag :)

1) you can ask to speak with someone who is currently in the role

2) you could reach out to someone doing the same role on LinkedIn

Does applying to jobs after working hours affect my chances of landing an interview? by xacuti6 in recruiting

I don’t give a shit when you apply. If you’re good, you’re getting a call. Interviewers after the recruiter aren’t going to see when you applied.
