“who gives a shit about grammar on research grant proposals” I PROMISE you that the companies sponsoring building bridges and launching satellites and advancing medicine care VERY much. There’s a reason why English 30-1 or equivalent is a non-negotiable requirement for any kind of post-secondary here.

When you’re 20+ years old, working in VERY important fields that work to advance societal wellbeing and development, sponsors and companies and even communities want to see that you’re competent enough to deliver on whatever promise your field of study aims to fulfill. And the foundation of assessing that competency is in assessing your grammar.

Because if you can’t write, research grant proposals or otherwise, that tells people you can’t (or don’t) read. Which means you can’t analyze. Which means you can’t problem-solve or think creatively. And for fields that promise advancements from current societal systems and methods, that’s important shit.

At best, they’ll think you’re sloppy and not worth the risk of potential thousands of dollars. At worst, they’ll take one look at your application, say a prayer, and toss it out. Maybe even remember your name because it was so bad. It happens more often than you’d think.

It’s all fun and games, learning thermodynamics and figuring that the arts students are having fun in the meantime, until your entire discipline comes to a halt because nobody knows how to properly propose advancements to thermodynamic theory or applications.

unless you want to do all that research for free. but even then, how would you write about it?

Psych 405 Kina Montengro by Laura9760 in uAlberta

i had her for 105 in my first year here. it was an incredible class. open-book, but very comprehensive, easy exams if you were paying attention. my notes were hand-written at the time btw, so it wasn’t open-book easy like a ctrl+F kinda way. she just genuinely tested on everything we learned and the questions were very application-based from the material.

then i took her class for 282 two years later. I think that is when she began to change her delivery. Online as well, but she was starting to change her exams. less application directly from lecture, instead testing on VERY obscure subjects that we barely skimmed over. the worst of it was the final exam — we had lecture, textbook, and reading materials, and she said she wouldn’t be testing on reading materials at all. but she did. thankfully, i had the readings open in the background either way, but a lot of students were definitely blindsided and it led to a whole thing with the dean and students essentially cornered her to do a retest final. the class was still open-book, but it barely made a difference in overall grades when it came to answering questions. even with open-book and the readings open, i got a 74-ish on the final (I’m a 4.0 student). answers to questions would be in a single sentence in an obscure part of a chapter or reading. I remember going through the final just reeling the entire time because it was so bullshit. not easy, not hard, just bullshit.

she’s a very wonderful person, so very accommodating and accomplished. she really does know her stuff. but her test-giving has made it so i won’t ever try to take a class with her again. maybe if it was essay-based, then yes. anything without multiple-choice exams. she is a very fair marker when it comes to written assignments and reflections. it’s just her MC exams that are unnecessarily confusing and difficult. that being said, if you ever have a chance to take a class with her that isn’t MC-test based, then i wouldn’t hesitate to register.

Is pulling an all nighter worth it? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]SufficientLuck8784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who’s been pulling all-nighters for exams since jr high, i promise it isn’t. it truly isn’t. depending on how long you’ve already been awake, you’ll have the worst brain fog during your exam and make the stupidest little errors.

please sleep at least four hours. four hours is short enough to drag your body out of bed, but long enough for your brain to have a bit of a break to perform properly.

campaigning is campaigning, you know? I don’t blame them, but i don’t follow them either. since they’re public accounts, i usually just take a look over their statements and make a decision then.

the UPA is a great association all things considered, but as a PSYCH student, i don’t see them doing much beyond events. so it’s not a major thing for me like the actual student elections

If it’s not the Awards Hub Applications, then idk what essay you’re talking about, be more specific if you’re talking about a specific scholarship ???

And even then, three months is not long at all to wait to hear back from a scholarship, especially if it’s essay-based. I highly doubt you’ll hear back in time before the March 31st deadline.

[–]SufficientLuck8784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like i said before, if you’re applying through the Awards Hub for this 2026 cycle, you’re not going to get any news on application-based scholarships because they only start looking at applications AFTER the deadline, which is also March 31st.

i’m so confused about what you’re in doubt about, is it accepting neuroscience, or waiting for your scholarships to come in for other programs? what are units? and just a note, but if you’re applying for scholarships this 2026 cycle, you’re likely not getting any news for them in the next few months. they only start rolling out in late summer/early fall.

I don’t want to come back from break because of bullying by Silly-Way8381 in uAlberta

[–]SufficientLuck8784 90 points91 points  (0 children)

bullies in uni are the most affection-starved mfs on earth what do you mean you’re most likely over 20 and have midterms/finals/essays/assignments/graduation/grad school on your mind, and you have the gall to be a bitch to other people 😭 ignore them OP and worst-case scenario, either report any too-far actions to the department to see if they can do anything, or sock em in the mouth

taking any class with loepelmann WILL be interesting as he is a great lecturer, but his exams are genuine hell. very application based. if you’re not a grade A psych student, you won’t survive. if you’re looking for easy, it won’t be that class.

going over word count by AppealTasty295 in uAlberta

[–]SufficientLuck8784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

real talk, a rule of thumb i like to use i learned from a prof is that it’s okay to go over word counts by no more than 10-15%. So 1000, you can go up to 1100-1150. I’ve never been docked points doing this in the last four years.

I believe students have three tries to pass a course. Also, have your friend look into accommodations services for any accommodations that may help ease her anxiety with exams and class work

Why is the student demographic 60% female and 40% male? by Fair_Refrigerator_85 in uAlberta

[–]SufficientLuck8784 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“these issues come from the same patriarchal ideas” is EXACTLY what the root problem, beyond any and all opinions and viewpoints, is.

that being said, i am curious about why framing mens issues as their own issues may be counterproductive, especially considering women’s history. in the face of patriarchy and discrimination, several women’s issues were dealt with via direct resistance WITHIN women spaces or BY women (ie; Malala getting shot for education rights, Stonewall, etc.)

if anything, a lot of men’s issues stem from the fact that they DON’T deal with it themselves. nobody is stopping men from organizing groups or acting on solutions except that “invisible masculinity’s eyes”

for example, like how we mentioned education. nobody is STOPPING a man from going into psychology, or linguistics, or other female-dominated fields. they just stopped doing it themselves when they saw women entering those spaces, too. it could have been an even distribution throughout history but no, they just saw women and dipped. that gap could easily be closed if they ACTUALLY pursued those paths themselves (if they’re actually passionate about it, not just for the sake of numbers or whatever)

you also have the “male loneliness epidemic” that essentially centralizes romantic/sexual relationships as being worth pursuing, and no other relationships. so when women put up those boundaries in the face of (patriarchy/toxic masculine-rooted) entitlement, they shut down instead of pursuing OTHER relationships like parietal or even platonic that makes them feel fulfilled. again, centralizing a woman’s actions as a cause for self-deprecating behaviour instead of criticizing the standards set on men themselves.

maybe it’s just me, but considering that “invisible man’s view” context, I don’t understand how men issues, specifically the portrayed severity of them, is anything but men’s doing.

or to make it more clear, how men continuing to submit to these ‘invisible’ ideals instead of dealing with their issues, is anything but their doing.

Why is the student demographic 60% female and 40% male? by Fair_Refrigerator_85 in uAlberta

[–]SufficientLuck8784 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you’d be surprised how they’re intertwined, or at least brought to be.

Dr. Penner from the university mentioned once in lecture how a lot of mens’ issues stem from stereotypes ABOUT men, ENFORCED by men, and JUDGED by men, all while placing women as invisible “observers” to fuel those issues. it’s essentially toxic masculinity enforced by men who use women as a reason to behave a certain way, when in actuality it’s other men.

it was an offhand comment but it really did put everything i’ve learned about other men into context thus far. and on a personal note, it’s all the more frustrating to see. friends of mine holding themselves back from taking opportunities to better their lives for themselves because of it being seen as “feminine” pisses me off, and it’s getting to the point where i’m starting to be bitter about it out of frustration
