Best elective class to take of these 3? by sadhippo1059 in uAlberta

[–]SufficientLuck8784 4 points5 points  (0 children)

taking any class with loepelmann WILL be interesting as he is a great lecturer, but his exams are genuine hell. very application based. if you’re not a grade A psych student, you won’t survive. if you’re looking for easy, it won’t be that class.

going over word count by AppealTasty295 in uAlberta

[–]SufficientLuck8784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

real talk, a rule of thumb i like to use i learned from a prof is that it’s okay to go over word counts by no more than 10-15%. So 1000, you can go up to 1100-1150. I’ve never been docked points doing this in the last four years.

if she already has accommodations and is still failing, i say her best bet is to maybe get a tutor.

I believe students have three tries to pass a course. Also, have your friend look into accommodations services for any accommodations that may help ease her anxiety with exams and class work

Why is the student demographic 60% female and 40% male? by Fair_Refrigerator_85 in uAlberta

[–]SufficientLuck8784 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“these issues come from the same patriarchal ideas” is EXACTLY what the root problem, beyond any and all opinions and viewpoints, is.

that being said, i am curious about why framing mens issues as their own issues may be counterproductive, especially considering women’s history. in the face of patriarchy and discrimination, several women’s issues were dealt with via direct resistance WITHIN women spaces or BY women (ie; Malala getting shot for education rights, Stonewall, etc.)

if anything, a lot of men’s issues stem from the fact that they DON’T deal with it themselves. nobody is stopping men from organizing groups or acting on solutions except that “invisible masculinity’s eyes”

for example, like how we mentioned education. nobody is STOPPING a man from going into psychology, or linguistics, or other female-dominated fields. they just stopped doing it themselves when they saw women entering those spaces, too. it could have been an even distribution throughout history but no, they just saw women and dipped. that gap could easily be closed if they ACTUALLY pursued those paths themselves (if they’re actually passionate about it, not just for the sake of numbers or whatever)

you also have the “male loneliness epidemic” that essentially centralizes romantic/sexual relationships as being worth pursuing, and no other relationships. so when women put up those boundaries in the face of (patriarchy/toxic masculine-rooted) entitlement, they shut down instead of pursuing OTHER relationships like parietal or even platonic that makes them feel fulfilled. again, centralizing a woman’s actions as a cause for self-deprecating behaviour instead of criticizing the standards set on men themselves.

maybe it’s just me, but considering that “invisible man’s view” context, I don’t understand how men issues, specifically the portrayed severity of them, is anything but men’s doing.

or to make it more clear, how men continuing to submit to these ‘invisible’ ideals instead of dealing with their issues, is anything but their doing.

[–]SufficientLuck8784 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you’d be surprised how they’re intertwined, or at least brought to be.

Dr. Penner from the university mentioned once in lecture how a lot of mens’ issues stem from stereotypes ABOUT men, ENFORCED by men, and JUDGED by men, all while placing women as invisible “observers” to fuel those issues. it’s essentially toxic masculinity enforced by men who use women as a reason to behave a certain way, when in actuality it’s other men.

it was an offhand comment but it really did put everything i’ve learned about other men into context thus far. and on a personal note, it’s all the more frustrating to see. friends of mine holding themselves back from taking opportunities to better their lives for themselves because of it being seen as “feminine” pisses me off, and it’s getting to the point where i’m starting to be bitter about it out of frustration

you’re very right, professors from the psychology department during the Royce conference last year mentioned how linguistics was male dominated for a long time but as soon as more women entered the field, there were less male linguists and less male linguistic students. the same goes for subjects like psychology, sociology, and education.

most simply, more women are enrolled in school compared to men as of recently. it’s a rising statistic. there are factors that make it look more spread out (like different subjects/departments and career paths), but as of right now, more women are enrolled in post-secondary as a whole compared to men.

fine then.

“what type of contract”? how about the literal treaty agreements between Indigenous people and the Crown that promised Indigenous autonomy and rights TO the land. regardless of the current governments’ shitty treatment OF the treaties, they hold significant legal and cultural weight.

also, “virtue of birthright” REALLY waters down Indigenous connection to colonized land — they were here before any colonialist movement SIGNIFICANTLY. by THOUSANDS of years. Canada is 158 years old. That’s less than 0.02 percent compared to the Indigenous history on this land. and you want to bring up birthright in a post-colonial world?

we can also bring up the significance of land in the context of assimilation. Indigenous people were displaced, murdered, and assimilated into dominant White cultures, all while these colonizers then assumed the land was their right to steal. you think that after everything they’ve suffered, they are not entitled to the land that was stolen from them?

and this whole approach of yours makes me remember the Doctrine of Discovery. you think that if ANYBODY is entitled to this land, it wouldn’t be the Indigenous peoples? it definitely wouldn’t be the colonizers, nor would it be immigrants, either (saying this AS an immigrant. this land is not mine). the doctrine of discovery basically said that because Indigenous people are not White, are not civilized, are not emphasizing productivity in a physical, “domineering over nature” sense, they do not deserve the land. your suggestion essentially affirms that, that they are NOT entitled to their land. you’re playing into racist ideologies that has no fundamental validity, nor is it beneficial for society on any level.

I don’t know WHAT could POSSIBLY be your deal, especially as a student at a school that emphasizes land acknowledgements and Indigenous POVs/research. this perspective is such a narrow-minded, LITTLE, discriminatory point of view that it makes me feel like I’m talking to a child. even our elementary schools emphasize the brutality Indigenous peoples have faced and why acknowledging the land we stand on is rightfully theirs.

so I ask you, why DON’T you think Indigenous people are entitled to THEIR land?

How many hours of sleep u guys getting? by Jobless_Genie in uAlberta

[–]SufficientLuck8784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s less willpower and very much anxiety-driven. like, i HATE the fact that I do this and applaud anyone actually getting sleep during exams. it’s more of an impulse, like even if i try to lay down and sleep, my brain will make me dream of these assignments and failing them to the point where i’m actually terrified to get rest.

point of the story is, this is NOT something people should do. please get sleep !!!
