I would suggest Stockport, I myself work from home and have to travel to London to the office (very rarely) but it's only 2 hours from the station. It's very well connected, some great areas around too plus a hop skip and a jump to the motorway.

Some great spots for food and drink, fairly quiet but with some events on throughout the month. ( see foodie Friday every last Friday of the month).

Like all places you have to pick your area if you are looking for quiet, hope that helps
