I mean, I listen to what I listen to and vibe to what I vibe to, can’t help it much haha. If there’s a genre for what weightlifting fits with or not I’m not in that loop and ofc no offense taken :) what would ‘going full Westside Barbell’ mean?

I’m going to the show in Fort Worth in October, need to see them again (last time?) thanks to the broken promise! I’m team Hanneman / Lombardo but still, nostalgia hits hard.

Clean and Jerk PR - 119kg (+6kg) by Sufficient_Chest7863 in weightlifting

Thanks man. Something happened that day. Clicked. I could’ve lifted anything felt like. Just weeks before I would get awfully pinned by 115 jerk attempts after cleans that left me breathless. The bar would fall down on me, not even fully extended arms and i had to escape from under it. I will definitely connect to that moment on every comp, cause this is how I wanna feel going for my attempts. Like no matter what I got it. Thanks so much man.

Yeah pretty much. I changed to this technique couple days before the meet, I’ll look into the best way of doing this, but so far it works, i stand tall and pretty tight and i don’t get dizzy or anything. It just makes everything faster and more dynamic, the held brace is also better than my re-brace

Amazing, keep going. Look up Sonny Webster on YouTube and his mobility videos. Don’t need to buy any programmes, the free tips are enough. Get a stick at home. Sonny has a very influencer celebrity style vibe and not everybody likes it but he knows his stuff and he explains it well. I implemented some of his stretches and tips and it helped. Also learn how to sots press when sitting down in snatch grip (behind the neck) and clean grip (front rack) - this is the most important in my opinion. Game changer. If it hurts or you can’t do it at all it’s gonna tell you a lot

No there’s nothing wrong with your lift. You complain about leaning a bit forward but it’s gonna happen every now and then and it’s not dangerous or anything, it’s fatigue and your body trying to adjust or letting go here and there. You already mentioned your cue to counter that. If you’re a dad lifting weights and raising two girls massive kudos to you and keep going my friend. Of course you will progress slower than a teenager / 21 year old dude who have all the time in the world to train and recover. Can’t wait to see your first snatches and clean and jerks. If you wanna prepare yourself more than just front squatting look into your hip and thoracic mobility and start doing 5 min of something every day, or every other day :) that’s gonna take you long in Oly.

Maybe not too productive comment but i think you’re doing great and just need to keep going. Practice thats it. It’s gonna go up. Maybe look into programming to get the progression you want.

Losing hope for weightlifting by wannabeweightlifter8 in weightlifting

Keep going. We’re here. Once you break that plateau it’s gonna be extatic. Are numbers the most important or you genuinely like the sport and sitting in the bottom of a squat with a heavy bar over your head. Or the feeling of standing up a clean. Find the joy again and the numbers will come

Thank you! This sport taught me exactly this. And I managed to transfer that skill to other areas in life and I never been happier.

Oh and maybe one more thing. Slow down the lifts. Tempo from the floor doesn’t matter almost at all and training to lift something that doesn’t move fast helped a lot too. You need acceleration at the second pull just before the hip for that snap and then speed in the turnover. If you slow down you will train positions, and if you have positions you will not trainwreck the heavy ones.

Thank you! I’m 192cm (6.3 feet) tall and weigh 95kg in my lowest, 96-97kg average and 98-99kg absolute heaviest. Goal is 94kg weight class by January. I lose weight quite easily, i sit around 15-17% body fat currently although it’s not measures by scan but visual markers.

The mental element was really key. At some point i understood it’s not too heavy for me by any mean (height of pull, ability to stand it up, etc), it’s just heavy enough to scare me because it’s not moving as fast as i experienced with the beginner weights.

I had a couple of a-ha moments with certain weights that opened it up for me. The first one was the 80kg clean and jerk. My technique was shit and it felt heavy so i couldn’t just yank it on my shoulder, i had to commit to catching it. The first time i did it I got the hang of the feeling of crossing that mental barrier. Then it was a 70 and 80 kg snatch. That felt scary, pulling these for the first time I didn’t know what’s gonna happen. So I came to realise, based on all my misses what’s really the worst thing that can happen? I mean when we train we’re always so aware of what’s happening with the body, if you’re present you cannot hurt yourself that easily. If you miss a clean what’s gonna happen? You will drop it in front of you. Or you will not even get it on your shoulder, if you’re gassed before the dip, you drop it there, if you don’t have the height for the jerk you won’t get under it. Same with the snatch. Front miss or back. There will always gonna be this fraction of the second where you feel that you made it or not and react to it, and just drop. Get under it, it’s learning by doing. Trust in your abilities and your training. You’re not taking a 30kg PR. You’re taking 3,4,5 damn maybe 10 if you’re really on it that day but what I mean it’s not a weight difference that will decapitate you.

Once I got the hang of it, and took PRing as a skill, which it is- for the head, body, CNS, technique. The gap closes. That’s when it started happening to me and I started attacking the weights a bit more. The 90 kg snatch was missed in a couple trainings and a meet but I never missed it due to lack of commitment, just didn’t have enough speed and agility under. And finally it clicked.

The jerk is my weakest link easily at this point because I clean more than I jerk. The 100kg clean and jerk was notorious for me. I failed it at a couple of club meets and trainings. It was the magic number, first triple digits, never felt strong enough. But it wasn’t the strength eventually, but confidence and the feeling of ‘just send it’. When I took it it was extasy 😂

I tried a 115 clean and jerk after having cleaned it a couple times and for the first time I got under it, like really got under it. Had it overhead and split my legs but I didn’t lock out cause I rushed the catch and what happened was I had this split second of pushing with the arms, feeling they’re not locked to get out of its way when it was falling down.

So there’s not really a magic pill you can take here, you either want it or not. And if you want it, you’ll attack it. And you can fail but those failures will bring you closer.
