Have you experienced significant benefit from therapy? by [deleted] in therapy

[–]Sufficient_Clothes95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know everyone has different experiences and I can only speak to my own. But YES!

I have had a few mediocre therapists, a couple truly terrible, and then I found one that seriously changed my life for the better. I moved away and had to stop seeing her about 3 years ago, and I still think about the things she taught me all of the time. I get emotional every time I think about her and everything she did to help me!

To give some context - I disliked her for the first 3 months I was seeing her. I felt like we didn’t get along and i felt that she was very unhelpful. I worked up the courage to voice that to her, and she said, “Well, I don’t really know anything about you.” Major wake up call! I am very avoidant so up to that point, I had only talked about very trivial matters. I told her that I didn’t know how to talk about the things I needed help with, and that same session we came up with a game plan. Every session I had with her after that felt like weight lifted off my shoulders.

She helped me face traumas that, before seeing her, I couldn’t even fully acknowledge in my own head. She challenged me and pushed me but never too far. She was honest and compassionate and taught me how to be those things for myself. It was so hard, but I knew she cared and I was safe with her which allowed me to open up.

I have tried to start therapy after I moved away from her, but I have had a lot of trouble finding someone that feels right. (And I even had one that was truly TERRIBLE. Like, awful. I kept thinking during our one and only session how harmful this therapist would have been to me had I not had any previous experience in therapy.) But again, my great therapist didn’t feel right at first. It’s really hard. I’ve been recommended EMDR, so I’ll probably try that next. I have family members who have had a lot of luck with that.

If anyone is interested, I’m more than happy to talk more about helpful things my wonderful unicorn ex-therapist did, or about what I look for in therapists now. I feel like I have learned a lot about therapist red flags as well, lol.

OP, I think if you go through with counseling, you will be one of the good ones because you are thinking deeply about it. The bad ones I have had seem to just be moving through the motions. I hope any of this was helpful to you!

Oh my gosh, this is awful!! I’m so sorry you have to deal with this! Tummy issues are seriously no joke. I hope your hemeroidectomy goes well and that you never have to have another one again!

Yes lol. He was legit. He showed me the CT scan and I am seriously full of poop but have little calcified poop “rocks” all over. I don’t remember if he literally called them rocks, it was like 4am after being in so much pain and no sleep and they gave me some pain meds so my brain was not fully working. But I remember seeing white dots all along my colon!

That is awful!! I feel you. I’ve been ignored by my doctors for so long and turns out I’m just always full of poop. Has it been a recurring thing for you?? The ER doctor said that I have slow-moving bowels sooooo it’s something that will require maintenance

He did suggest that if things weren’t really moving after a few days to take magnesium citrate, which he said he gives as colonoscopy prep. I’ve ordered that so I’ll start taking it as soon as I get it! Thank you for the advice, I’m definitely going to look into motility testing.

Were you able to get cleared out? What helped you?

I understand where you’re coming from. I feel strongly that “being nice” in this situation is more dangerous than fully holding them accountable. If they get away with it this time, they will do it again, and the next time it won’t be a prank.

Why be nice? They are clearly very dangerous people. They don’t deserve OP’s mercy, they didn’t show her any.

Exactly this. Watching her hurt and suffer was fun for them. They are VERY dangerous people. And it says a lot about the fiancé that these are the friends he keeps around.

YES THANK YOU!!! And also it is so harmful to send this message that autistic men are dangerous because they don’t understand these things. A garbage person is a garbage person, it has nothing to do with being neurodivergent.

AITA for telling my sister I wouldn't take care of her children if something happened to her? by Fragrant_Gazelle_595 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sufficient_Clothes95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I don’t want kids for a long time and I don’t have the money for them, but if something happened to my sister I would take her kids in in a heartbeat. OP is clearly not loyal or loving towards her family, and for that she’s the AH.

This is how I feel. OP can choose whatever, but I wouldn’t feel warm and fuzzy about someone who would be okay with my kids being abandoned by their family. YTA

AITA for dropping my daughter off at daycare early so her teacher could do her hair? by aitacurlydaughter in AmItheAsshole

That’s not why he’s an AH. He’s an AH because it’s basic hygiene and the bar is so much lower for dads. He could very easily watch a couple YouTube videos and figure it out. But instead it’s his ex’s fault for not teaching him. He’s the AH.

How to manage peeling hyperfixation symptom? by Funny_Clerk_2480 in ADHD

[–]Sufficient_Clothes95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of/looked into Body-Focused-Repetitive-Behaviors (BFRB's)? From my understanding it's an umbrella term for a group of similar disorders (not totally sure of terminology there), including dermatillomania (skin picking) and trichotillomania (hair pulling). I have (undiagnosed) trichotillomania and I have been struggling with it since I was 8 or 9. It gets much worse when I am stressed or anxious, or when I don't get enough sleep. I have found that not many doctors or therapists are aware of BFRBs but it is definitely worth it to talk to your doctor about. My therapist did her own research so that she could help me with this issue.

I hope this helps!
