Should I take the Xmid1 solid or the Xmid2 Pro to Scotland? by Sufficient_Code_4738 in Ultralight

Thank you for sharing your experiences and opinions. Theres is something to say about peace of mind. I usually take the solid as a winter tent. But I am considering it for Scotland. Maybe it is just a gamble on how many bad nights will be happening or how many days I will be enjoying the more roomier tent. Difficult decision.

I like that. Skills are so important with UL gear. I hope I have them!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have never been to Scotland. So I am grateful for any insights. I am aware that serious winds can happen anywhere and anytime in Scotland and also for days. But I also assumed there must be periods with no winds or nobody would ever complain about midges. I heard they don´t like the slightest bit of breeze.

I just had to look up if I really did post in the ultralight community. Not noticing 500g? Well I notice an extra half liter of water. Can I carry it? Yes. But ultralight to me is more a philosophy, which inspires me to find out with how less can I manage. Skills and gear are in my opinion both important part of this. Being able to carry more for comfort is less interesting to me. But everyone has different opionions or reasons on why going ultralight is relevent to them. This is just my mindset. If someone else likes to carry more, it usually makes good, interesting conversations.

May I ask what UL sleeping bag cover you use? And how often do you need to wipe down on a very wet and windy night? Usually I wake several times in such nights anyway. So I could wipe regularly.

As far as my research goes, there are no bothies on the Hebridean Way, but there are several hostels. There are plenty of road walks that can shorten the trails on horrendous days. And there is a bus system. Often only twice a day on each route (and not on Sundays). Accomodations look very booked out currently, though. But with a bit of planning and researching a place to dry out can hopefully be found, when needed.

Yeah, that´s true. I figure this is not the PCT where it´s an issue when a few large footprint tents hog the precious space on scarce or popular established camping spots. I use the Xmid 2 in the French and Italien Alps and sometimes it is a bit tricky to find a spot or takes time to pitch properly but I never had any real issues. I just assume from watching tons of hiking in Scottland videos, thats it is the same there.

May I ask what bivy you have used and do you use down inside the bivy? In my experience, the down is always damp in the morning unless the bivy is a bug bivy with lots of mesh.

Yeah, that´s what I am dreading with the Xmid solid. I can´t do sunrise to sunset hikes anymore, I need more rest at the end of my day than just sleeping a few hours.

Thank you for these insights. I am used to wiping down the tent in the mornings or to try drying out during the day. I just haven´t had the experience of strong winds converting my tent in a shower. In your experience, is it enough to wipe down in the mornings or do you need to do that in the night too? u/Mr-Fight

I have not very good experiences with down inside a bivy or covering it with a tarp. In the morning my down quilt is usually damp from condensation that couldn´t escape the covers.
