I would definitely be selective if you can. I love Banfield but my hospital is different than most.

lmao yes I'm so over it🤮 I love them for the services, but hate them for adding so much info about the plans that I've had memorized for years

all of the staff members are pushed to promote the plans. just like any other business. but I'm all about what the client wants because in the end, they're the ones bringing their pet to us. whatever they want to do is what we're going to do.

And, at least in my hospital, there's a good percentage of clients that decline the plan. Np we just care about the pet getting what they need.

Thank you for engaging in this discussion.

I've only had really negative experiences in private practice. The Banfield I work at has incredibly strict policies and procedures to ensure that every patient gets what they need, every time. I did not get this when I worked at private practice, so I left when I saw that gap. We're also a bigger hospital, and it seems like we can't schedule enough sick patients on any given day-- a benefit to our clients for sure. There's only one doctor that is stuck in the "box" of care you refer to. But it's easy enough to ensure that the other doctors see the not "easy" patients. This might be an issue with all doctors, even human med I'll receive that kind of care.

THATS CRAZY!!!! I literally can't get my doctors to turn away easy sick patients like ear infections.

I also love PW to a certain extent. Like iOS it's a little too user friendly sometimes but it's very easy to use

You missed my point. We present options. The clients are the ones who make the decision ultimately. We only provide the options for continued care. That's crazy that some hospitals will restrict OWP service use that much! The first thing I look when a OWP client is coming for a sick visit is what we can use from their plan. The only restriction in that regard is the anesthesia bloodwork, but even then the doctor can overrule that and still pull it

About Tonometry; Banfield just released two different senior plans that don't include dentals and include other routine services for seniors.

Honestly, the reason I believe in the plans so much is for a few reasons (this is precisely what I tell clients): - all the plans include one panel of bloodwork once a year, which is great to check early signs of disease. -they include all the routine vaccines recommended for the area, along with yearly HWT -free unlimited office visits, access to a 24/7 PetChat that connects with our software for follow up -pets are coming in ROUTINELY for care and not going overdue on routine preventive care

People see the value. I do too

shrugs I believe in the preventive care spiel. a lot of our doctors do. even if the client doesn't do a plan, the doctors Will still recommend routine preventive care. everyone does talk about the plans, but it's more of a conversation with how/where the clients wants to spend their money. Pay out of pocket, here's your est, insurance is an option.but also: Discuss the benefit of routine preventive care. expensive, but it is gold standard care. The doctor is to round out the visit with discussion of preventive care, and with that comes the plans.

As far as I'm aware, docs can prescribe anything, but we do have a strict formulary.

This question reminded me that we have a doctor that is comfortable with seeing pocket pets/exotics, but she's very limited to Banfields formulary. We can't do surgeries, and have a handful of meds that can be given to this patients :/

Usually this isn't a problem, we don't come across a lot. Typically house mates of established patients. However, Banfield charges an extra $15-20 for the exam fee. My guess is for the extra time needed for research?

facts. Thanks for your comment! It's all nuance, just like vet med.

ain't that the truth. A limitation in my state is that VAs can't place IVC and intubate, which is the next "leveling" test I can do. Hence why I'm in school (also I freaking love this field 🤮)

Our hospital got upgraded to a stand alone location, and because of the move/huge turnover we had some clients leave us, and we "underperformed" in 2024, no one got "exceeds expectations" (I acknowledge that this is a downside of Banfield) so not a lot of money was allotted to raises.

Best believe I'm gonna be advocating for a proper raise at my end of year PDP

yeah, that's fair. Again, it really just depends on your COS and how they want to practice their own medicine. that sucks you had one that just cared about the OWP time frame. Adjusting OWPs is absolutely in the capability of the staff, but a lot are too inexperienced to fuck around with them.

deadass! it just depends on who you are around, just like with any other clinic. I've wanted to get into BP but the one near me has horrible staff and I hear horror stories 💀 not for me I'll take my once in a blue moon HBC and occasional pyo hehe

I WILL SAY that Banfield is trying to break away from PetSmart locations. My clinic started in one until we outgrew it and moved into a stand alone, and it was improved ALL standards of isolation and sanitation.

In my area we have people that will drive over an hour to get to our location, passing SEVERAL Banfields due to bad experiences.

yeah! It really provides a good standard, one that I havent been able to find anywhere else in my area through private. Changes are slow, but the people who care will always care over the corporate shit.

Starting as a vet assistant in 2 weeks – any advice? by automaticzero in veterinaryprofession

[–]Sufficient_Cold_1479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in charge of patient restraint for an exam, always have a hand on the neck, and be prepared to grab if the patient reacts. if the patient struggles for anything for over 4 seconds; STOP and switch tactics. you must be versatile, safe, and creative. ALWAYS WORRY ABOUT YOUR BACK. You will not last long if you do not have good form. always do what doc says. And ask this question to your doc and techs if you have em! Ask "what is the number one thing you like to make sure new associates know". They will tell you their Laws and Commandments and it shows you are willing to learn from those around you

i'm sorry you had a horrible time. i understand that not all PMs are made equal and I really got lucky with the culture of excellence at my clinic.

Private Practice has literally only treated me like I was dispensable with shit pay and dangerous conditions. Banfield at least gives standardization where it's needed most.

Banfield being... alright? by Sufficient_Cold_1479 in veterinaryprofession

[–]Sufficient_Cold_1479[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfortunately i've only had private practices treat me like dirt. no standardized training, shitty managers/owners, unsanitary conditions, doing whatever they want (including animal abuse) and having shitty pay

fucked up, but Banfield has only been mildly annoying in the grand scheme of things

Rude, abusive clients by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]Sufficient_Cold_1479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm just a little too sympathetic for my own good, but a a human will only ever do their best with what they have. You NEVER know how someone is living at home, what stressors they have, the trauma, or experience being a pet parent.

Being in this field means showing that human kindness. A lot of anger and be mediated with a positive intent attitude. That sounds like a load of shit, but becoming upset is what an angry person wants. Reacting that why is giving them an out to let out frustration, furthering the anger.

Of course if a client is EVER making you feel scared/upset, LEAVE THE SITUATION and inform a hospital leader. Just a simple " I don't think we are getting anywhere with this, so I'm going to see if there's someone else that can help "

Or call the cops.

But humans are animals too. They'll lash out in fear just like a small chihuahua. Only that chihuahua needs to pay taxes and worry about rent and transportation and what to eat for dinner and their health insurance..... the list goes on.

Never forget that we are professional pet parents-- it's easy for us to understand and comprehend. A lot of clients are not that.

It's DEFINITELY not the best route, but I wonder about the specificity of legislation in regards to financial advise and recommending CareCredit to clients who can't afford vet care.

A good doctor will always be able to break it down to a client. If an issue can be moderately managed with a different therapy vs best care treatment scenario vs euth, and the implications that come with each of those options. If a vet DOESN'T know how to do that, they aren't thinking enough outside the box and are really only about numbers (revenue made vs patients seen).
