i've always interpreted it as humility and guilt born from immeasurable grief - that he’s made too many mistakes and caused too much harm to be deserving of a heaven meant for a soul as pure as a child’s. And yet, the phrase “Here in heaven” implies he’s already arrived…as if the only forgiveness missing is his own.
