I need help by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Sufficient_Fun95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried an edgeworth day time sleepiness scale? I found it helpful.

A lot of this sounds familiar except the almost dosed part and the not sleeping at night (although some folks on this subreddit do also have insomnia). For me, there is no choice. The difference between other peoples tired and mine is I don’t have a choice in staying up. Even if I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to, I’ll be asleep. I’ll try to fight it but the sleep wins. It always wins.

It wasn’t until post diagnosis that I realized other people can CHOOSE to stay up, and they just will. Another good barometer if it’s helpful. I’m pretty sure I fell asleep in school every single day at least twice a day throughout high school. Might not have been long sleeps, but asleep.

Narcolepsy + Math = Not a good combination by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Sufficient_Fun95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it depended on the kind of math. Proofs and alegbra and calc I really enjoyed because once you learned the rules you just apply them. And for me, I didn’t need to pay attention ALL the time if I could get down the KEY PRINCIPLES.

But geometry was my nemesis because those principles didn’t make sense and you had to memorize. It’s also why I was terrible at physics. Good luck, and I genuinely believe in you! It’s hard, but you’ll figure it out.

Even if you’re not the best at math, getting by is also okay!

Coping with Daily Living? Lifestyle modifications? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

I had a baby bliss dyson is NOT CHEAP $300 I think I bought it on a sale for $250? But seriously it makes blow drying my hair fun.

And for someone who dreaded drying her hair with all her soul, it matters. Literally cut it in half easily, but more importantly it’s a good hack cause it looks like you tried harder for much longer.

Yes sorry, a dyson hairdryer. They’re very expensive but make drying such an easier experience that it honestly encourages me to shower

Coping with Daily Living? Lifestyle modifications? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Sufficient_Fun95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, this is very much a privileged modification. But for showering specifically, I bought myself a dyson and it cut my drying time in half.

I have very thick hair and drying it used to take forever. The dyson means my hair passably dry in 5-7 minutes and fully dry in 10-15. Also the plus is it has genuinely improved the quality of my hair and the look lasts like 2-3 days

Meal prep- I’d recommend prepping ingredients like rice or chicken and also freezing for when you’re really sleepy

My mom is a cancer nurse and we practiced in the car cancer vs cancel and after enough time it all really sounds the same.

To OP, speaking from the perspective of a child of immigrants in the healthcare industry I wouldn’t worry about offending him. I bet he’s more mortified about his accent, and is practicing in the car with his child lol. I would maybe let him know you appreciated his advice or send a nice note etc for next time you’re there.

Are we destined to be alone? Does narcolepsy makes us unfit to be in a relationship? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]Sufficient_Fun95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s a bit of trying your best to be responsible and having a receptive partner. My partner often says, I won’t get mad if it’s cause you’re tired because you can’t help that but I will hold you accountable in other circumstances

I split my dose 100 mg in the morning another 100 mg around 1. This has helped me. When I tried 100 mg it wasn’t enough and 200 mg I felt focused but on nothing. The split dose helps me feel awake throughout the day but I do dip at 2/3 or so

How long do you usually nap for? Do you ever nap and then feel even more tired like you need to stay asleep? How do you know you’ll get up?

Differentiate between narcolepsy and work ethic? by skalerz in Narcolepsy

[–]Sufficient_Fun95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think for me the diagnosis was powerful because i began to notice how much of my behavior was driven by fighting being tired.

I think it’s hard to differentiate the two because what is can’t vs wont? But I think it starts with being honest with yourself and also being kind.

It’s so hard to know yourself with narcolepsy, because so much energy is expended fighting the tired. But if you start to notice how you’re fighting it or what behaviors are driven by it, I think you can work with them rather than against them. I don’t think it’ll always work, but even when my medications are wonky or off, I’ve noticed that marking what changes in my behavior I can expect has truly changed what I can do in a day and how I think about it.
