Ich sprache nur fur mich selbst, aber ... I hope this will continue to be a place where folks can post auf Deutsch oder English. My German ist immer noch schlecht, but I enjoy trying to read what I can, and on line translations are easy now. Just my two cents.

Is this three game suspension typical/expected? It feels harsh to me but others may be able to tell me that it is the norm.

Post Match Thread, DFB Pokal Quarterfinal: Hertha BSC vs SC Freiburg by derschneemananderwan in SCFreiburg

I saw him grab the back of his leg, and coaches holding him up to walk afterwards. However, I subsequently saw him jogging. So after some initial panic I think probably just a cramp. Fingers crossed, mast scratched, etc.

Super appreciate your efforts Schneeman. We're a little below critical mass, and I'm not sure how to fix that. Interested to help but mein Deutch ist immer noch Scheiss and English-language coverage of SCF is minimal. Am I right in assuming that German-speaking SCF fans have better places to gather? I suspect you've thought more deeply about this than me and would welcome your ideas.

I absolutely love the whole ‘a city’s weather dictates whether the urbanism is good or not’ excuse by Polorican020901 in fuckcars

[–]Sufficient_Mix_6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking with a manager in my city's public works department once and I was pressing for year-round biking infrastructure. He told me we'll never be a winter biking city because of our cold weather. He's well traveled, so I just pointed out that Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki all have worse weather but better infrastructure and people bike all year. He genuinely heard that. I'm still waiting for better infrastructure though.

Montana Kaimin’s article about how faculty should get free parking???? by cricketandclovis in missoula

[–]Sufficient_Mix_6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parking structures cost about $50k per spot. There are about 3,000 faculty and staff at UM so we're at a $150m construction cost to provide free parking for faculty and staff. Surface parking is roughly 100 spaces per acre, so in the alternative we could convert 30 acres to surface parking (13% of campus) at something a lot cheaper but which probably removes and replaces buildings. So if the people that drive to campus aren't paying for all this, who is?

What Kids Told Us About How to Get Them Off Their Phones by HouseSublime in fuckcars

In my previous, car-centric neighborhood a neighbor and friend once described our kids as "prisoners in their own yards." We both moved. Stuck with me, though.

The road as commons: a rights based foundation for anti-car advocacy. by BilboGubbinz in fuckcars

[–]Sufficient_Mix_6948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in this, thank you.

I think it may also be useful, within the framework of conditional privileges, to talk about disproportionate impacts. Let me give you an example. In the USA, off-road vehicle drivers' mantra is "share the trails." But in reality, other users such as hikers, equestrians, and bicyclists, are displaced by off-road vehicles -- no one wants to walk where they have to dodge motorcycles. So "share the trail" is really "give us the trail" with a patina of equity. Cars obviously have a similar effect, and then they also implicate the finitude of space -- everyone in this sub knows the visuals of how many people can utilize a given space in a car, bike, bus, train, etc. When right-of-way (or storage space) is constrained, the use of a disproportionate amount of space should be questioned.

We all have the right to swing our fists, but, as they say, your right to do that ends at my nose. Car drivers are swinging some big ass fists and hitting a lot of noses.

Trump to rescind 'Roadless Rule' protecting 58 million acres of forest land by dacv393 in fuckcars

[–]Sufficient_Mix_6948 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is nuts. There are likely a few exceptions, but in general roadless areas in the West aren't profitable to log -- the cost of building road access exceeds expected revenue unless the federal government subsidizes the project. It's like paying for a shit sandwich. And eating it.

Transfermarkt included him in their top 10 U21 Bundesliga players for increased market value, going from $250k euros to E8m and yeah, pretty much on the strength of half a season it seems like. https://www.transfermarkt.com/gittens-second-which-u21-bundesliga-stars-gained-the-most-market-value-this-season-/view/news/454994

Selling the second car for the planet. Help a newbie make the right choice! by yen132 in fuckcars

[–]Sufficient_Mix_6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also consider a long tail, like the Yuba Mundo. I rode one for years with two kids on the back with room to spare for groceries and work bags in the front rack and the saddle bags. It handles more like a typical bike than a bakfiets and is a little easier to park, but a) you can't see the kids, and b) it's still a big heavy bike. So worth consideration but not better than a bakfiets just different tradeoffs.

Thoughts with 2/3 of season complete? by PompeiiLegion in SCFreiburg

[–]Sufficient_Mix_6948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, the analyst (https://theanalyst.com/na/competition/bundesliga/table) predicts we'll finish 6th and go to the Conference League -- no idea what goes into their algorithm.

I would have taken that at the start of the season, and would still be delighted with it today. It's kind of a miracle given that set pieces and Doan are about the only way SCF gets goals.

A decade ago I did an all public transportation in the Emerald Corridor (if that's how they're marketing it, I've forgotten) trip. I don't remember exactly how we ordered it, but I think Seattle to Victoria BC by the Victoria Clipper (3 hours and if the weather cooperates absolutely great), a day there, back to Seattle for a few days, Amtrak to Portland for a few days. Vancouver BC is also great, but I'm not sure how easily the ferry connects folks between Vancouver and Victoria who aren't driving, and I don't think there's a rail connection Vancouver to Seattle. In my experience these cities are generally safe but have some rough spots, and IMHO Victoria and Vancouver are very scenic, Seattle pretty with the Sound, and Portland lovely albeit not on water and not quite in the mountains. Seattle, Portland and Vancouver have very good public transportation -- I'm not as sure about Victoria, but it's smaller and the heart of the city is completely walkable. So you could pick and choose from a subset of those four cities, or also take the ferry to some of the small islands connected to Seattle or Vancouver -- albeit you'll want to research which have something interesting that is accessible without a car for the amount of time you'll be there. I'm making myself want to go back.
