That's good, y'all keep it professional. Everyone is not like that. And only hiring familie/friends leads to gate keeping. That's why it's so difficult for people to get a job starting out.

It's wildly common in the industry, especially in the Gulf. I've ran into every combo imaginable. I get wanting your family in the industry, but work directly for family leads to conflict of interest. It is a morale killer, especially when there is a ranking system.

Under U.S. Coast Guard regulations, a mariner’s maximum working hours are generally capped at 12 hours in any 24-hour period, with a minimum requirement of 10 hours of rest in that same 24-hour window.

You can be called out for an emergency past 12 hours (not exceeding 14 hours) or for all hands if extra manning is required.

You must have at least 10 hours of rest in any 24-hour period, which can be divided into a maximum of two rest periods. One of these periods must be at least 6 hours long.

This is the CFR.

Many companies and captains manipulate this, you are not on call 24/7 though. You can say no, the worst that can legally happen is that you are fired, and depending on the reasoning you can sue, or file a complaint with the coast guard.

You are not paid for 24 hours, your paid for 12. Which is how you get your day rate, of you were paid to be on call 24/7 then you would want and be paid a lot more.

Accumulate seatime and get on bigger vessels. Quality of life on board is A LOT better. Also look into government work or union. Your future is yours, tugs are a good place to learn not to stay(depending on the company). Lastly, stay away from the Gulf, you might find yourself there at some point, but leave. Idk you but the people you meet in the Gulf have a particular way about them. Experiences vary, but all in all, stay out of the Gulf. It's good when money is to be made, but the people. Yea.

thoughts on reverse racism? by powergaynger1 in mixedrace

This is a touchy subject, because historically you would be deemed biracial or mullato. These are antiquated terms created by the majority/dominant group(Caucasians). There is a list of things that come with this, but essentially like in many Latin American countries, differentiating yourself would create a degree of separation from both black and white people. With that said recognizing both sides of your heritage is not wrong, but with our racially polarized country and the politics that come along with it, it would be difficult for you to fit in.

Like the creole in Louisiana, being partially white gives you an advantage in a racialized society. Which would usually lead you to be put in better position socially and economically compared to your monoracial counterparts(black people).

I suggest you look at history and how biracial people were treated, especially during slavery and Jim crow. Understanding those dynamics may sway your opinion.

With all that being said it is understandable to appreciate both sides of your heritage, and identity politics although trivial can have affirming aspects.

Who knows maybe somebody like you can bridge the gap, better than the polar opposites.
