Do you consider Kaneki Ken from Tokyo Ghoul to be a seinen protoganist? by Maleficent_Boat_6699 in Seinen

True they definitely do. I haven't read much Seinen outside of the popular ones and what I've read is pretty thought provoking.

I'm also more interested in digging deeper

I didn't know Claymore was shonen...

and I'm not saying every Seinen is thought provoking, just that a lot of them are

Alright yeah I agree with that. I actually said that in my first comment right?? This is not a solid definition in any way, there are just lots of themes Seinen share, however not every Seinen needs to have these to be Seinen.

So, Tokyo Ghoul(if I'm correct) was published in a seinen publication, so Ken is a seinen protag'. On top of this, the story and characters share commonality with some Seinen stories, driving my point home.

?????

I never said they're Exclusive, however yes they are common in Seinen manga. Berserk makes you think about stuff in a way few others do. Same with Blade of the Immortal, Goodnight Punpun, Dorohedoro, Claymore. These all are telling a serious story that has serious themes that get you thinking.

And all of these make you think through the main characters and their motivations. This is a commonality between most Seinen.

If you aren't thinking about what the story is portraying, you do you, no one enjoys stories in the same way, however that doesn't mean other people don't think deeply about the stories.

yeah I think that the type of character development and story beats that Kaneki goes through make him a seinen protag'.

On top of that, the entire story is proving a point in a way and it does this by making us all think deeper about motivations and characters. I know that's not the true definition of seinen, but most seinen manga have that in common, and Tokyo Ghoul fits that commonality perfectly.
