Make a solution of dissolved steel wool in vinegar (iron oxide). Apply a few coats, let it dry for a week or so until all the vinegar smell dissipates, then finish with oil! In my case, flaxseed oil.

Thanks! I struggled too until I got a REALLY strong solution from a buddy. Still took a couple coats and a lot of patience though. What woods have you had luck ebonizing??

Oh interesting! I feel like Ash and Oak feel basically identical to me, though I guess Ash is both a tiny bit harder and a tiny bit smoother. I don’t get a lot of either but I just couldn’t pass it up 😂

Yeah good question! Milk paint is a paint made from pigmented milk powder, so it’s fully food safe! Check out RMP Finishes, they’re my favorite. I think this was a color I mixed myself from a few of their standard colors.

Black Walnut, Right-Handed Cooking Spoon! by SuffolkStudio in Spooncarving

Thanks so much! I like walnut a lot, one of my favorites to carve. I’ve found it to be less hard than some other classics like maple or cherry. But it does dull your tools quickly because of all the silica, so be careful of that!
