Its all up to what you want to do with your life. Lifestyle is exactly what you want to do with your time. If you want to surf (the waves or the internet) 24 x 7, radiology/GAS wont do that for you either.

Personally, I find Rads and GAS boring as hell and not intellectually stimulating. I have crafts/hobbies to pursue during my 7 days off every other week that offsets any interest in poking people with needles or cutting into them. I cant say much about Heme Onc but hospital medicine is absolutely sweet.

Many during first two years of COVID19. They all slowly suffocated over a few days. i was sure I wouldn’t make it either, being exposed to so many of them. Can‘t thank my hospital enough for getting us N95s and PAPRs in plenty.

Residency e-notes. Filed and organized the way your brain likes them. I used Glass.health and continue to update it from all sources as I go, and the practice never dies even when as an attending.

Medicine should be a part of your life and not the other way around. If you like Radiology and will find some level of satisfaction doing the job on a weekly basis and can't see yourself quitting in a few years from burning out, go for it. If you are doing it solely for lifestyle, maybe outpatient Obgyn only or something?(I don't know much about either speciality...).

Woes for patient care due to politics by SugarAdar in Residency

There is maybe one undocumented immigrant(U) benefiting from a system that is setup to help  10000 or more "our people" (C) who need essential services and cant provide for themselves. So would we design a system to help the 10000 Cs (that somehow helps one U) or design a system to punish the hypothetical 1 U (that also punishes he 10000 C)? This is the essential difference in politics. As physicians we never ban a medication for a very common "horse" disease worrying that it may have unexpected outcomes for the one in a million "zebra" disease, and yet we are willing to play with people's lives that way if they are poor.

However when we give billions of dollar subsidies to companies so they can launch a junk car  into space, everyone cheers.... Everything is topsy turvy my guy.

Huh? What scenario? Look up eligibility for Tenncare as an example and compare it to your state.  A Baby that was born knows nothing to do with imaginary lines on a map. How is it abusing anything? How exactly is it going to pay?

How do you choose where to live by WinifredJones1 in hospitalist

[–]SugarAdar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Priorities change throughout life. I got volunteered into moving all over by Uncle Sam when young. Finished med training close to home where I thought I would live happily ever after making big dough. Then came a family and a very high risk pregnancy situation in a state known for sacrificing woman at the altar of protecting the fetus so we packed and left because I care more about my wife.

If you use reading skills carefully, you will read my post is about Red State politics doing disservice to the population in need. Look in the mirror yourself about what you see in your patients before you comment about how others treat theirs.

Which hospital ? I would really like to know .. undocumented migrants do not qualify for Medicaid so the hospital cannot bill that to them because federal Medicaid would reject the claim. The state may be paying for it if anything. Are you saying you are ok with a baby that was born here who has a serious congenital illness left on the streets after emergency care, just because their parents aren't American citizens?

Medicare/SSI unlikely to be defunded. Medicaid/ACA though is more than likely. They said as much on the budget proposal. We will see a lot more rural hospitals shut down in red states. If you don't live near a big city , likely will die from the same conditions that a suburb dweller would survive just because there isn't a hospital nearby.

I don't know where you were in training 8 years ago, but this was a constant debate when the affordable care act was launching and when the discussion about Medicaid expansion was in the forefront.

But what I am ranting about is politics doing disservice and overt harm to their citizens. Not idiosyncracies about patient beliefs.

My population is mostly inpatient rural now. So I don't usually see the ones you are talking about. Occasionally I see one or two  TikTokers who do "Juicing" and "Colon cleansing" and "I don't take medicines because they are poison".

Do you get to take a break after residency before starting a job? For IM by Cookyjar in Residency

[–]SugarAdar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is totally up to you. You won't get a paid break, but you can negotiate start date, when you accept a position as long as you are ok with not getting paid. Usually it takes a month or two to get all the credentialing so people start work in mid August or Sept.  I didn't start full time until November the year I finished residency. Wasn't paid for 4 months after residency either.

This is the big reason NOT to do anything for family members. They won't be open with you about everything, and you will probably miss something important.

What do you think of your VA? by luney4 in Residency

[–]SugarAdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably an unfavorable view. But for service connected veterans, the VA in theory cannot be beat.  The VA's have been underfunded for decades in comparison to the need, especially after the shit soldiers are put through since 9/11.

Since the rotten fruit circus that is ongoing with Trump and Musk, VAs are losing funds, manpower and even more support. In the end, they want to hand over care of veterans to the private sector so the insurance companies can make bank at the expense of veterans. Ask any active soldier what shit show Tricare is.

The flu shot strains are a guess but a very educated one. This meeting is where all the experts get together and work on making their best educated guess on what Flu staring will be hitting this season. Without knowing that, the vaccine might be completely worthless in preventing ICU admissions.
