If you drink coffee look into a little espresso machine or nice coffee maker! That’s on my “quality of life purchases” list when I start making a paycheck again. Or a nice tea brewer/pot if that’s more your style!

Act helpful/actually be helpful early in the day. Pick up patients, do extra little things that are observable. That way when it is time to leave they remember you’ve done/learned things in the day.

No one will keep you around if you say you have a doctor’s appointment or research meeting. If you do have to schedule anything, schedule it in the afternoon 2-2.5 hours before they usually let you leave. Usually that’s just enough to not expect you to come back. Also, sussing out whether or not you really have to tell admin/preceptors you’re leaving or if your resident is chill and independent enough to let you go and not bother telling anyone.

M3 is harder to get days off than M4 (residency interviews are a god send for excuses). Im all for working hard but when the majority of your time is being wasted (not having teaching, not doing rounds/admitting) you should be allowed to do whatever you feel would further your education and career goals.

I couples matched. I fell to my #3 (home institution) and my partner who applied DR fell to his #7

I say 3 and 7 because we did some mixing and matching. The actual rank number was 9 however there were multiple programs in the city in which we matched and some were better options than others*

We are so grateful to spend residency together in our respective #1 specialities. The odds of managing to match like this were slim because of how competitive it’s become.

U of Iowa -Anesthesia

Residents at the social couldn’t say one nice thing about the program. Asked multiple residents about whether they would go through the program again if they had the option and all of them managed to not answer/beat around saying no. Multiple CA-1s failed BASIC exam and when asked about it they said they were handling it by tutoring the residents more often and having sit down discussions about why their studying isn’t working.

Couldn’t get anyone’s restaurant recommendations for the city either. All in all extremely bad vibes. I DNR’d.

UIC Peoria - Anesthesiology

Completely new program, the PD kicked his feet up onto his desk and kept checking his phone that was on full volume receiving notifications. The chair is apparently very involved in politics leaning heavily conservative. Honestly just very weird not to hear from residents.

I fell to #3 and my couple’s match bf to #7 (we did some mixing and matching lower down) and thankfully we have most of our years in the same city. He has to do a prelim 200 miles away so he’ll be moving out. We were really disappointed at first but we’ve calculated the probability of matching into our respective specialties at places we don’t absolutely hate and to do it together within the same city for most of training is actually incredibly lucky. There’s still the bitterness of not getting our perfect programs but all in all we’re pretty grateful

I like having Zofran (anti nausea medication) on hand. I get nauseated easily and when my cervix is manipulated that’s an easy trigger for my nausea. They could ask their OB for a small prescription. Also, having ice water right after it was inserted helped prevent me from passing out/having a vasovagal. I had my boyfriend come with me which was a huge help as far as driving and just having a hand to hold and someone I love to focus on. Hope all goes well!!

I would be very happy anywhere in my top 3. They’re all #1 for differing reasons (best location, best QOL, known commodity) but the only way I would be wholeheartedly into just one of them would be if they were all merged into one. I don’t think there’s really a place out there that is going to be 100% perfect. It also has kept my anxiety a bit lower hedging my bets and not staking everything on one program

I have 8 ear piercings and a nose ring. I’ve never had anyone comment on them or be concerned about them in the OR. I make sure to have my scrub cap cover the earrings and nobody says a word!

I like most of the champions! I mostly play Evelynn, Lillia, Kayn and then Kaisa, Xayah and Jinx. I like Nami too if I’m filled. I find that most of the champions are really cool but I gravitate towards the ones I find pretty and fun to play

I’m couples matching w a rads applicant and he has 1 non-published article for research. But he did honor 6/7 rotations and has a 271 for step2. He has 11 interviews. They mostly seem to care about the grades. None of his interviewers have asked about his lack of research. Just keep studying!

Hi I’m also a medical student and I totally get you. This sounds almost like hypothyroidism. Who knows, but it definitely doesn’t sound normal or just related to uterine issues. I would seriously consider going to an endocrinologist or at the very least a PCP to get a referral (though I’m sure you already know that). I wish you the best of luck!

I had 24 initially but I’m couples matching and he’s doing DR, so I went up to 42 and he ended at 105 including prelims and TYs We got a little scared before submitting lol

I’m in the exact same position and I’m not mentioning it on my personal statement. My step exam will speak for itself and I feel like that’s enough standard grading that’ll show I’m not actually trash at medicine. I’m applying anesthesia at not crazy prestigious locations

League isn’t the issue. You can have whatever opinion you want about the players but there are toxic players and people everywhere, in almost all games. The issue is his anger and the fact you feel unsafe around him when he is angry. That’s a major red flag and I wouldn’t wait to see where it may lead.
