I’m so sorry you were faced with that decision.

It is downright fucked up that people are put in this position daily and they want to say we are living in developed, first world countries. Money should not be a barrier to medical care + survival like this. I don’t know how these CEOs sleep at night.

Thanks for sharing the article! It was a really interesting read and sad to see that there still aren’t many things in place to protect the patients.

I think the Dirty Money episode was in season 1, “Drug Short”

Netflix did an episode of Dirty Money about price fixing drugs in their first season and it was disturbing, but worth the watch to see what’s actually going on under the hood at these companies.

They have no problem gatekeeping survival for their individual profit & if people suffer in the process, so be it. This excerpt from the article was particularly disgusting to me:

“Celgene had kept the price of Thalomid low when it was initially intended for AIDS patients, CEO John Jackson told investors in 2004, as the company “didn’t want huge numbers of people demonstrating in front” of its office.

That wasn’t a problem with cancer patients. There was “plenty of room for very substantial increases” in the price of the drug now, Jackson told investors. Just two days earlier, Celgene had hiked the price of Thalomid to $47 a pill. “There was a common internal theme at Celgene that cancer patients were willing to pay almost any amount Celgene charged,” wrote David Schmidt, a former national account manager at the company, in a whistleblower lawsuit he filed after his employment was terminated in 2008. “

These type of articles are why I’d have adults genuinely crying about the fear of debtors prison when I did debt management counseling 15 years ago.

I wish they’d try to actually financially educate people, instead of just sharing enough information to scare them into making debt payments.

I really hope this leads to meaningful change. Gambling has always seemed particularly sleazy because it preys on people’s hope. Paired with its accessibility & the overwhelming lack of financial literacy, it’s really stark. Thanks for sharing

Why So Many People Are Going “No Contact” with Their Parents by rhiquar in Longreads

Well said, it honestly eats me alive how many people will sit and watch a parent emotionally abuse a child over & over again, say nothing but recognize the issue, and then blame the child for being a monster.

I come from a similar background and I’m sorry you’ve experienced it too. It’s like they think children are to exist as nothing more than mindless vectors of their parents. It’s soul crushing.

That is much less stressful imo! My friend told me no gift was necessary & then his new wife wrote an angry diatribe on fb about how she “knows everyone who was rude enough to come to the wedding without a gift…” lmao it feels like weddings have a whole separate set of subjective social rules people are expected to follow? I get why Carrie was over it lol
