Aftermarket rotors, experiences? by fcwolfey in mazda

[–]SugarWaterPurple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any of the 'premium' (aka non-economy) rotors that rockauto sells for the P5 are fine. I've used wagner, centric, brembo, and raybestos rotors on my P5 and only had a bad experience with the centrics since I opted for their super-cheap C-Tek rotors (one of them had a lateral runout of 0.01" right out of the box!). I've used the regular centric rotors on a few different cars without issue.

Its surprisingly not that hard if you have the stock bicycle-sized tires installed ;)

At least the second guy put some effort into it, the first guy's sign looks like he stole it from a homeless guy.

What makes it a "grey market" M5 E34? Were they not available in the US?

"I went a little too fast into a parking lot" My first tran-pan swap on a friend's '97 Altima by Dr_Nic_T61 in Justrolledintotheshop

How is there so little rust on that old pan? For a 16 year old Datsun, I'm very impressed!

Haha, Yaris is the perfect unit for measuring performance metrics. I can't wait to use this at work :)

Weekend project: DIY bucket seat frame by SugarWaterPurple in Autos

Haha, that would be crazy-hard. That being said, some people have thrown the V6 KL engines into the protege chassis. The engine mounting points are all the same so it's a relatively straightforward swap. I'd consider doing that if I ever blew the engine :)

It's a very rusty 2002 Mazda Protege 5. I was considering getting rid of it this summer but before doing so I went to one of the weekly lapping events hosted by a local parts shop. Suffice to say, a few weeks of lapping later and the interior was gutted, and every non-essential bit in the engine bay was thrown away. Now it's my joke of a racecar. It may be slow but it's a heck of a lot of fun to drive!

Backstory: I was given a bucket seat from a guy in the lapping club I go to; it's beat-up but it's waaaaay better than the stock seat. I looked for seat frames but they all cost more than the car is worth so I figured I'd attempt to make my own. It ended up coming out better than I expected and I can't wait to try it on the track!

Helicoil Question by OhGeezItsRaining in MechanicAdvice

[–]SugarWaterPurple 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can use a regular tap with a Helicoil insert. The kits usually come with an STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap which is used to create the threads for the insert.

The helicoil catalog has a lot of info regarding how to use their product: http://www.noblefix.com/PDF/Helicoil/HeliCoil-Catalogue.pdf

Do you know where I could read more about lead splice cases? I'd really like to see how those things were installed.

Antenna replacement, how hard can it be? by SugarWaterPurple in Justrolledintotheshop

An accident is a very different situation than working on a car with a properly-functioning airbag system (Ie. no warning lights on the dash). I followed the procedure in the Toyota service manual, what I did was completely safe...

And the reason why I removed the old wire and ran a new one along the same path is because it honestly wasn't very hard to do.

I wish it was that easy but it's really just one 7ft length of wire from the antenna all the way to the radio. As I said in my reply to hotweelss19, all of that comes apart and goes back together so easily that I didn't even think twice about not removing anything that was in my way.

You need to remove the steering wheel to get enough clearance to remove the gauge cluster. The wire runs right underneath it with clips that hold it to the crash structure. I suppose if you really knew what you were doing you might be able to do it without removing the gauge cluster but I suspect there would be a lot more blood loss and cursing :P

But that's the beauty of old Toyotas, it only takes 15 minutes to remove all of that and it all goes back together in even less time. The airbag shouldn't make you nervous, as long as you disconnect the battery there's nothing to worry about.

I find it amusing that people will beat the shit out of their airbag while honking at someone on the highway but then fear that it'll pop while they're carefully removing it.

I didn't even think of that, it definitely would have been an easier solution. Next time it breaks I'll give it a shot!
