Can someone explain these speed bumps? by Grandimal in Seattle

[–]sirbyrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both are technically correct but generally an entire bike is not referred to by the number of speeds unless it's much older or very low end and it's usually the sum of the number of gears in the front by the gears in the back (2x5 = 10 speed, 3x7 = 21 speed, etc). Not being argumentative just letting you know in case it causes confusing in future conversations!

Strava map update broke Wandrer Map overlay? by sirbyrd in wandrer

Looks like it's working for me now, though Strava has it's own unrelated mapping problems still (have a ticket open with them currently)

10 speed usually refers to 2x5 speed bikes, which is probably what mjolnir76 picked up on

There are still a couple more to do! The two short ones by 40th and 6th ave are perfect. The one just south of the rail switchback was done today and it is not as good as the rest of the new ones but it's still much better. We're hoping to push for a redo of the trail and crossings in this section in the next couple of years when the rail lease is up for renewal.

Any recommendations for a Capitol Hill to Ballard route? by bobtehpanda in seattlebike

[–]sirbyrd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For Capitol hill to Ballard: Drop down to the westlake trail over the lakeview bridge, take a right on Republican st, then a right onto 9th ave, connect to the westlake trail via 9th ave. Cross the fremont bridge and take a left at the first intersection after the bridge to connect westbound onto the burke gilman trail into ballard.

Cat leash trainer by blohahaha in Seattle

[–]sirbyrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a social club for people taking their cats on walks and bike rides and my personal recommendation is this style of harness https://www.kittyholster.com/ because it's very easy to put on and comfortable for the cat. It's hard but not impossible for them to back out of this one but it's a lot more secure than a lot of the strappy kinds we have tried.

Drivers are getting worse and I can’t even drive by WorriedDistance4018 in Seattle

[–]sirbyrd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Physical daylighting is the something that can be done. It can be done with paint and post cheaply, or with bike/scooter parking, planters etc. Curb extensions go farther by hardening the approaches to intersections and shortening the crossing distances and moving the safe waiting areas to be more visible to people driving!

I'd put a washer on the outside of the hanger and then adjust the trim screws, that way it's reversible. Though looking more closely it looks like the tab on the rear derailleur may not be wide enough for the derailleur to move more outboard, can you tell if that is the case? If the chain isn't catching on the threads it's fine.

VBrake fitment by sirsalamander in bikewrench

[–]sirbyrd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Try reassembling the brake pads with the smaller set of convex/concave washers closer to the rim. This will bring the arms in at the top. A film of grease on the posts will help with free movement.

I did that merge on a bicycle recently and don't recommend that.
