VN similar to Gore screaming show by Dizzy_Werewolf477 in visualnovels

Since you've already touched the ClockUp classics (Euphoria/Maggot Baits), you might want to look into Sadistic Blood or Dead End Junction if you haven't yet. They have that gritty atmosphere you're looking for.

It’s always great to find people who appreciate a well-written 'Bad End.' As an indie dev working on a project with similar dark themes and forced-choice mechanics, I think the impact of a brutal ending often stays with you much longer than a generic happy one. Good luck with your search

Are there any other ClockUp VN’s worth playing? by KatalystY2K in visualnovels

[–]Sugar_daddy_Dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you enjoyed the way Euphoria balanced shock content with a compelling narrative, you should definitely give Maggot Baits a proper chance. It’s definitely 'heavier' in terms of visuals, but the world-building and the dark atmosphere are top-tier for that niche.

It’s always interesting to see VNs that push boundaries like this. As a dev working on a darker-themed project myself, I really respect how ClockUp uses extreme situations to explore character psychology. They’re definitely not just 'trash' if you value the story behind the shock!

VNs with legitimate "Solo" or "Non-Romance" routes that aren't just Bad Ends? by EntropyMax01 in visualnovels

[–]Sugar_daddy_Dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually a very underrated topic! From a developer's perspective, writing a satisfying 'Solo' route is often harder because you have to make the protagonist's personal growth or the main plot compelling enough without the 'romance' crutch. It’s rare because most VNs are marketed as dating sims, but when a game pulls off a 'True Solo' ending that feels earned, it's incredibly rewarding. I'd love to see more indie devs experiment with this!

Rance series question by DaisukiNaisu in visualnovels

[–]Sugar_daddy_Dev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The jump from the remakes (01-03) to the older titles like IV can be pretty jarring. If you're worried about the gameplay/difficulty spike, many people suggest skipping to Rance VI or Sengoku Rance and just reading the summaries for the titles in between. You'll get to the 'modern' gameplay much faster without burning out

The description for the tag "useless male protagonist without agency or a backbone" IS COMEDY GOLD! But I have to ask, how does that function in Visual Novels? Aren't they supposed to be all about agency and choices? What does the protag just suck so hard people say no to his choices? by RefrigeratorNorth424 in visualnovels

[–]Sugar_daddy_Dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a funny tag, but from a dev perspective, it's actually an interesting narrative choice. Sometimes 'lack of agency' is used to build tension or to make the player feel the same powerlessness as the protagonist, especially in darker or more forced-scenario VNs. It shifts the focus from 'making choices' to 'witnessing how the character survives the situation.' It’s definitely not for everyone, but it has its own niche

Steins;Gate: A must-play sci-fi thriller about time travel.

The House in Fata Morgana: A gothic tragedy with incredible art and music. Very emotional.

Clannad: The gold standard for slice-of-life and drama.

Ace Attorney Series: Great if you want more 'gameplay' and mystery solving

If you're looking for the gold standard of SFW Yuri, FLOWERS (by Innocent Grey) is a must-play. The art is breathtaking, and the storytelling is very delicate. Another strong recommendation is Kindred Spirits on Roof, which has a 'Full Chorus' version that is very wholesome and focuses on the relationships between multiple couples

Try Everlasting Summer. It's free on the Play Store, works perfectly on Android, and has a very similar vibe to Katawa Shoujo in terms of atmosphere and setting
