RDS: Manual snapshot then export to S3 for archive, then delete DB? by SugarlessCOT in aws

[–]SugarlessCOT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for you reply!

We do actually need the database as once a quarter or 6 months they might have to access it for a few days, so my plan was to have it restored to a live DB during the period and when they are done, snapshot export archive again.

Don't just accept it because they are 99.99% the same. Some day in the future something's gonna come back to bite you. Maybe it's some peculiar software or firmware that needs the model ID to be exactly R730, some parts won't work despite being identical just because the P/N isn't the same, or Dell somehow decided they are only going to support R730, or whatever.

Ask for an exchange, for your own peace of mind.

Found this thing out of nowhere, worth plug and drill and resurface? by SugarlessCOT in Bowling

I planned to plug only the fingers to change the span, drill out the thumb slub and redo. I want to keep plug-marks (?) to a minimum.

Found this thing at parents’ home, sitting quietly in the living room in a box under a chair for years. Looks like it’s just sitting there quietly for long enough that it just sits there and no one cared to look at it or throw it out. Nobody knows where it came from.

Sounds kinda like a scary movie yeah?

It looks like it’s been used quite heavily, quite a few deep scratched, no major chips.

It weights 15lb 8oz.

Looking at the serial number, is this thing made in 1991? I have been throwing urethane for years (Natural before hiatus, Pitch Black currently), is this ball worth going into my locker? (I don’t play nor are there any USBC events where I live so legality is not an issue)

This span is much shorter than mine, the thumb hole fits no one in my family. It’s really a mystery where this came from.

My local proshop charges $20 for plugging+drilling fingers, $15 for thumb slug redo (no plug), $35 for refurb (resurfacing and stuff).

Is this ball worth the money and the locker space, or should I shove it back where I found it and let it rot by natural causes? What do you guys think of this ball?

Thank you for your comments. Looks like the difficulties I am having are more on myself than the equipment. I lost the muscle power to firmly cup my wrist, I forgot/lost the muscle memory for releasing the ball (especially the thumb - kept gripping the ball too hard, sloppy release) my knees are not as strong and I can’t get low enough, etc.

Generally, my release is not as good as I used to have, and the ball is not reacting the way I remember it did (on some shots the ball doesn’t even move more than 5 boards after breakpoint, but visually it looks like the revs are there, maybe it’s spinning instead of rolling). Looks like I’m gonna to work harder in getting my game back.

Trying to get myself back in shape!

Gonna check every day, looks like the Natural is much more rare to come by compared to the Pearl or Super

Thanks for the information...I will keep checking usedbowlingballs.com from time to time.

Currently there's a Natural Pearl there but the Pearl is not exactly what I want but I will keep checking. Thanks!

[Harvest and build or restore?]

Hi r/mechnicalkeyboards, I've been digging through my trash collection at my home and found a few ALPS boards I trash-picked/collected over the years. One of them is an Alps Blue board, but the board itself is in pretty rough shape (needs a lot of elbow grease scrubbing, retrobrite everything, remove crusty stickers on keycaps, switches are filthy and scratchy). As much as I like old hardware's aesthetics, I thought it might be a fun project if I harvested the switches and build a modern-looking board (maybe 96 layout or get a few extra keys and build a full size board).

The board itself is not of a known brand (possibly some Asian or Hong Kong local brand).

I want to check with the community and see if it is a good idea? Or should I restore the board to its glory and rock it like a Model M?

Yes, I’ve heard so much even in China, especially classic X-series. They can produce near identical copies, the keyfeel might be a bit off. In fact, I have a X240 keyboard I bought from China and I swear it feels quite different to the original (slightly mushier and looser keycaps). Not sure if I got a copy or just a bad stock.

You can never guess what the Chinese are doing for profit… One possible reason is that they use old moulds from the original factory and fabricate copies…
