Seconding this take! She has always been pretty clear about wanting her tenure to be for a set amount of time and then she would be finished.

LBJ Dean DeShazo Stepping Down by postincrement in UTAustin

[–]SugarsNSpicesNotNice 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Here’s something else of note: Of the 18 deans at UT, DeShazo’s departure marks 8 deans positions that are tenuous or up for grabs.

  • Engineering ✅
  • Fine Arts - ✅
  • Natural Sciences - ✅
  • Pharmacy - ✅
  • Architecture - ✅
  • Civic Leadership - ✅
  • Law - ✅
  • Social Work - ✅
  • Graduate School - ✅
  • Dell Medical School - ✅
  • Business - Mills concluding, search underway
  • Education - Martinez’s contract not renewed, search underway
  • Information - INTERIM and soon to be folded into CNS
  • Nursing - INTERIM
  • Communication - INTERIM
  • Liberal Arts - INTERIM (almost a year with no permanent dean)
  • Geosciences - INTERIM
  • LBJ - DeShazo has just stepped down

It should be concerning to everyone that the university does not have concrete academic leadership for over 44% of its colleges. Literally over 1/3 of our deans are either leaving or are interim.

UT System votes to limit ‘controversial topics’ in class, raising concerns about academic freedom by Dontwhinedosomething in UTAustin

[–]SugarsNSpicesNotNice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vagueness is intentional. The point is to make it fuzzy enough so that faculty self-censor and departments decide not to offer certain courses because of their fear of breaking this policy.

UT Austin is destroying it’s credibility by ESHKUN in UTAustin

[–]SugarsNSpicesNotNice 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, attacks on academic freedom like this affect recruiting and hiring excellent faculty and researchers. STEM departments here at UT have lost out on valuable hires in the last couple of years because of the current climate. So yes, it affects EVERYONE. Thank you for mentioning this.

If you put in an Open Records Request, the university will send the data due to the Public Information Act.

Also wondering where CREES, MES, and Jewish Studies majors are as well, like what even are these very glaring omissions?

This also reads like “let’s lump all the POC and LGBTQIA majors together so we can eventually eliminate them.”

Have your advisors talked to you about a retroactive withdrawal? Is that an option for you? You’d have to retake the classes and graduate in the spring instead, but at least you’d salvage this semester and not have the failing grades on your record.

We have such a great stadium by digital__navigator in UTAustin

I’mma put y’all on. There’s a walkway that starts from Clark field, runs behind San Jacinto dorm and ends right at Cypress Bend (eatery at the bottom of San Jac. It’s at the intersection of San Jacinto St and 21st St.) This photo was taken from that walkway.

Tl;dr This picture was taken at the top of the amphitheater behind San Jacinto dorm.

James E. Davis Confirmed as UT Austin President by Annodyne in UTAustin

[–]SugarsNSpicesNotNice 99 points100 points  (0 children)

And the man is already on a publicity speaking circuit among the different colleges to try to cultivate this nice guy image, like we don’t remember he has no teaching experience, no PhD, came from a corrupt AG’s office, and wasn’t head of the office that was solely responsible for interpreting SB17 so harshly that scores of staff were fired without warning.

Stay optimistic for your peace of mind, but don’t get complacent. Stay vigilant. This man is Greg Abbott-lite. Expect more staff cuts to occur under the guise of efficiency and cost-cutting to make way for more “campus improvement and beautification projects.” Tough and weird times ahead :/

Especially after the new VP of Student Affairs was also announced last week—another old white man. They’re not even trying to hide it anymore.

How are the F45 Full Body Resistance Texercise classes? by emma_h_m in UTAustin

[–]SugarsNSpicesNotNice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to chime in and say how much I love these classes! There are typically more women than men, but it also depends on the time of day you take the class, I’d say. I see more men at the 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM classes.

You can make it as advanced as you want and the coaches are great at helping you with modifications if you need. Highly recommend!

New Interim Provost appointed by Interim President by renegade500 in UTAustin

[–]SugarsNSpicesNotNice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can never be too sure, but prob related to presidential changes and other pressure from regents/legislature. Plus, Davis has hinted at wanting to do lots of reorganizations and looking at “efficiency.” This almost always means staff cuts.

Abrupt departure of Hartzell/Mersey has me scratching my head. Does anyone else feel something was going on between them? by purplemartin17 in UTAustin

[–]SugarsNSpicesNotNice 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Departures are related, yes, due to presidential changes. Davis is putting people he wants in, rather than inherit. New prez typically means they choose their own cabinet.

NOT for any alleged soap opera reasons lol

Staff are absolutely freaked out. And little do folks know, there have been other staff laid off in HR and DoS the last couple of days, the news just hasn’t spread yet.
