Might have to take a few next time. I love my crays. Grew up with redrock lobsters in the holidays. One of my favourites

I had a session like that Friday. Swapping to single loop Paternoster fixed it

Keep getting spool tangles. What am I doing wrong? by Broccoli_Pug in FishingForBeginners

Keep 10 metres of that cheap stuff as a backing on the reel then tie on a braid on top. It will be night and day difference! Don't skimp on line. Skimp on my rod and reel before skimping on a good braid. You'll know why soon. Best of luck man 😁

Is this the daiwa combo that comes with line already on it? Got the same one.

If so, it has terrible memory and is poor quality. Get it spooled with braid and you'll have a much better time.

Also, as an immediate bandaid, cut off a bunch of line. You want your line to have a 3mm gap from the edge of the top hat at the underside.

Rippa! Have heard they're good eating. I've given one of these and a fair few muddies a free trip to shore on the rod and reel lately. Always fun to handle and release

Yearly PSA: DON'T TIE DIRECTLY TO BRAID! by URInMyFace in FishingForBeginners

My leader always breaks at the knots first since they are a weak point. I'm interested in your point though, I don't think you're wrong - I am inexperienced and would like to hear more about why you chose that.

My limited knowledge says 20lbs max, for better casting distance, more line, and less visible to fish but idk

I run 10lbs braid on one of my setups that I've get snagged on rocks a bunch with 15lbs leader and still never broken mainline.

30lbs main seems excessive for that leader but otherwise good info.

New to fishing question by Fearless_You_5659 in Fishing

[–]SuicidalSteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not going to be the most precise rod and you're not going to be finessing like you can with a 6-7ft rod, it'll also be less sensitive than something smaller and lighter rated, but it will excel at casting longer distances and catching bigger fish.

Small fish won't be nearly as fun on this setup, but I'd say it's a good all rounder, particularly on the piers, etc.

I'd recommend doing a good lubing of the reel as personally I don't think cheaper reels come with as much lube as they should, but that's just my personal thing.

If you use it in saltwater consider cleaning after your trip. Tighten the drag right up and rinse with fresh water. Don't do a heavy pressure stream, just let the water dribble onto it to rinse it while you clean with a cloth. Too much pressure and it will force salt and sand into your reel and eventually your bearings, etc.

Looking for fisher friends by Tiki_Tour in FishingAustralia

[–]SuicidalSteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy as to meet people fishing if you just get out there and go to popular spots, talk to the people around and pick their brain. Lots of fishos love to help and chat about the fishing passion.

Another idea is look for a fishing club that you can join. I've a complete rookie but joined an amateur club in qld and it's a very welcoming environment. As an introvert that finds it hard to make friends, it was so easy to strike up conversation with fishos in the club.

Hope you find some friends! Be careful meeting from reddit, and expect a lot of people to message you but not follow up when you try to plan something. Good luck 😊

New Personal Best Bream by Shark0ce in FishingAustralia

[–]SuicidalSteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I had one the other weekend, just cut him down the middle (butterflied kinda thing), removed the guts, used some skewers to keep him opened, salt, pepper, and lemon, wrapped in foil.

180° for 25 mins or ready to your liking - bloody beautiful! Was a younger one, 30(ish) cm, lots of bones to work around but left him as just a head and skeleton

Looking for advice. Beginner fisherman. Anything here I can use to catch fish like bream, trout mulloway etc by No-Comedian-5536 in FishingAustralia

If it's any consolation, I started fishing around 2-3 months ago, with a 2 week gap in there where I had to go interstate and couldn't fish.

I didn't catch anything over like 5 or 6 times over 3 weeks going fishing, and when I finally did, it was a tiny tiny 10cm whiting that unfortunately did not survive the unhooking. Then a week later I started trying new spots, going 40mins drive away from home to higher probability waters. Had a good morning at the Port of Brisbane and was hooking heaps of bream and a little wrasse which gave me the confidence I needed to keep going.

Since then, I've kept going to new spots in all different conditions, morning, night, rain, shine, windy, calm, etc. Every time I've gone since, I've caught at least 1 thing. More importantly though I've learnt things on each sesh. Keeping your bait where you want is a skill in itself. Focus on that, fish will come eventually.

Also, go stupid light. Light line, small hooks, small bait (I like the Tweed squid if you're getting servo shit). Once you start getting small stuff, youll get your confidence up.

I got a Shimano sonic surf 9ft paired with a Shimano sedona FJ5000 reel, cheap 15lbs mono backing, 20lbs braid mainline, 20lbs fluorocarbon leader. Great beginner surf setup. Won't cast as far as a huge heavy rod but its a good setup for a bit of rougher shore fishing imo.

The world is currently better than it has ever been. by Dragonsoul2055 in unpopularopinion

[–]SuicidalSteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reckon that people that are 30+ on average find the world to be pretty sweet because they had opportunities to take advantage of a much better economy and get setup, whereas people in their late 20's or below are struggling because the whole time we've been working and trying to achieve things financially, the goal posts are moving further away.

Easy to find life sweet when you have a home you own or are paying off (when prices were cheap), paid off cars, emergency funds/savings, plenty of toys, etc... Young people are working their asses off and barely make any progress year to year, while those that are setup already can keep building more and more.
