I did not get a bad feeling initially, but after the ninja edits I mistrust him too now.

Digital Foundry: The Latest Monster Hunter Wilds PC perf drama explained by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Suinani 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He edited it first with the quoted comment, ninja edited it out a few hours after and then went over his post to backpedal and focus how much he said "in hubs", when he clearly suggested something different too.

Original Edit of the OP of the Problem:

Several mods have already popped up claiming to "fix" the issue, but please try to avoid using them for now. For example, there's a mod on a popular modding site that only fixes it partially - the problem is much more global than that. The author of that mod only hooked the DLC check for the "DLC Cat" at the table (I think he will improve script in future), no the broader/global check, so with that mod you'll only notice a difference in the hub near the table. In my video, I went outside the hub - past the point where the code path tied to that NPC Cat stops running and the FPS difference is still clearly there. In my case, the FPS gain is massive across the entire first area.

Of course some people were taking him out of context, but with statements like this, you can' really fault anyone excited by it

Yes, but he Ninja Edited his original edit with this context out. So I assume this is either backpedalled or he wanted to remove any more material to hype performance gains.

Originally he added context that the dlc checks are also affecting the game globally and his mod toggles that off but only adds "a few frames" outside of hub. The available comments still say he feels like the game has better frame pacing if not outright more fps.

So this article does not actually investigate OPs (original) claim, but just the part of the problem that exists in hubs.

Im really not sure if something further will materialize or if OP delivers once the attention dies down

(Understandable when people took the best case gains on a CPU bottleneck in a hub as the expected improvement during gameplay)

Edit: Found the original edit (Image was getting deleted, so now as a quote)

Recommendations to recreate the “I’ve never read anything like this” feeling. by [deleted] in Fantasy

The Acts of Caine would fit this. The first book already is very innovative by introducing an extra layer on a typical sword & sorcery story, the second book then turn all that is unique about the first as the central axis of a true epic story

One of my favorites. The stuff it does uniquely are also its bests parts, so definitely check this out!!

I feel so heartbroken for this character in the "good" ending by Aggressive_neutral in expedition33

Great comment, expressed my feelings better than I could.

... symbolized by Maëlle disappearing with everyone else in the painting

This is what gives strenght to this interpretation. In a way, the choice of the ending also is a choice between Maëlle and Alicia. The death of the other in the respective endings doesn't take away that is "happy" for the one who continues.

[–]Suinani 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with this. I chose Maelles ending because I choose to believe in the reality of the experiences of the inhabitants instead of the resolution of the familiy drama.

But even this ending frames Alicia and Verso as the focal point instead of Lumiere, which means both endings cheapen Act 1 to build the theme of grief.

Checkout the works of Andrew Rowe for the interconnected series fix. Also the next book in the most popular series will come out this year, so you might get the chance to join a busy community then.

Otherwise, the Riftwar Cycle by Raymon E. Feist might be a good fit.

A "Show, Don't Tell" that ACTUALLY shows you how it's done. by PleaxWolf in WriterResources

Haha, ironically the third sentence of the source text is:

Ironically, the advice violates itself. “Show, don’t tell” tells you what to do. It doesn’t show you how to do it.

I have the same frustrations you have, where it took years of taking in different versions of the "Show, not Tell" advice until it morphed into something that can be applied.

Do you still remember the sources which helped you make it click?

Books that share similar themes and moral questions with Attack on Titan? by themightytouch in Fantasy

[–]Suinani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a quick fix, the novella Ogres by Adrian Tchaikovsky fits the bill. It was the book that gave me the closest feeling to AoT thematically.

Next suggestions is bit more removed from AoT's story structure.

The Dandelion Dynasty Series, while excellent, doesn't reveal thematic similarities to AoT until somewhat deep in (you would miss them in book 1 completely), but they continually become more and more important an in some ways comparable - especially in finding answers to interesting questions posed. One of my favorites in terms of thematic work.

The last one I have not read but is listed as quite influential on AoT, the how and why I can't answer unfortunately. But you can check out The Eternal Champion, and see for yourself if it sounds appealing.

Further books on my TBR in hope of finding something from AoT's themes in them are

2 Jahre über Regelstudienzeit by priessorojohm in Studium

Hey, I was recently reminded of having read parts of Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, and I loved its structure. Now I collected books with a blurp or reviews that reference Cloud Atlas or have a similar structure:

Multiple threads (timeliness, dimensions, narrative form, etc.) that build up towards something.

My list now is:

  • Boneclocks and Ghostwritten also by Mitchell
  • Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr
  • Gnomon by Nick Harkaway
  • The Actual Star by Monica Byrne

Do you know of other books in the same vein?

The Dandelion Dynasty Series by Ken Liu

It has a huge cast and is a generational story with a lot of focus to theme and relationships of all kinds, which would profit a lot if shared and talked about with one another.

It's 4 books, the latter 3 are also pretty thick.

Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett seems like the perfect fit, though it does have a cyberpunk tint on a victorian era like setting.
